President Obama, Vice President Biden, Sergeant James Crowley and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates just sat down for their much-anticipated beer in the Rose Garden of the White House.
The "casual" meeting of the President, his old friend "Skip" Gates, and the police officer who arrested him outside of his house on July 16 comes after an entire day of cable news anticipation for the "beer diplomacy summit."
Earlier today, Obama said he's "fascinated with the fascination" over the meeting.
Here's the White House pool report, which includes which beers each man drank.

Can you say, UNCOMFORTABLE? That cop looks like a brother caught strolling through Beverly Hills with a napsack.

I wonder how all this would have changed if the cops were black and the professor was white.

"You Can Beat The Wrap, But You Can't Beat The Ride" Whatever happens next I am sure Sgt. James Crowley regrets arresting Prof. Gates. Race issues (if any) aside cops get mad when you don't show enough deference. Any one other than a Harvard prof. and we would have never heard of it.

I posted this in another thread, but just found this as the main one...so, a repeat:
This whole spectacle is so freaking stupid I'm beside myself. It's worse than a Bush "Town Hall" meeting. It's so contrived as to be a complete joke to anybody with 1/2 a brain. If they really wanted to have a 'sit down' the 4 of them would have done a photo op, then retreated behind closed doors to talk freely. None of these people could say anything of meaning or emotion or "real", for fear their body language would give them away.
I'm embarrassed for Obama. Isn't he supposed to have people that pull him aside and say, "Sir...this is a REALLY stupid idea. You'll look like an idiot.....like, Bush, even."
The theater of politics sickens me and Obama just did some of the worst I've ever seen...and I freaking like the guy.
If they wanted it to not be contrived, they would have shared a pitcher of beer anyway.... ;)

I completely agree with you. The event was very trivial and embarrassing. What's next, Chardonnay and Brie with Pelosi and Boehner? Who dreamed up this event? Obama really needs a vacation. It's sad to see him at this level.

I disagree, because it's a way of bringing (relative) closure to the incident. Now it's officially old news, even for the screamers.

then why the hell have the meeting out in the open? Just do the photo op, and then go behind closed doors and talk.
I know that there is theater in politics, but this was ridiculous. Who the HELL thought this up?
