Obama on Gates Incident: 'My Hope Is This Ends Up Being A Teachable Moment'

President Obama just made a surprise appearance at the daily White House press briefing, taking over the podium from Press Secretary Robert Gibbs to make a few comments about the hullabaloo over the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.

"These are two decent people," Obama said. He said he spoke by phone with Sgt. James Crowley, the arresting officer, which he said confirmed his impression of Crowley as "an outstanding police officer, and a good man."

He said both parties overreacted.

But, he said, "African-Americans are sensitive to these issues, and even when you've got a police officer who has a fine track record on racial sensitivity, interactions between police officers and the African-American community can sometimes be fraught with misunderstanding."

"My hope is that, as a consequence of this event, this ends up being what's called a teachable moment," Obama said.

...where all of us, instead of pumping up the volume, spend a little more time listening to each other, and try to focus on how we can generally improve relations between police officers and minority communities, and that instead of flinging accusations we can all be a little more reflective in terms of what we can do to contribute to more unity.

As for those who criticized the president for getting involved:

There are some who say as president I shouldn't have stepped into this at all, (which) I disagree with. The fact that this has become such big issue is indicative of fact that race is still a troubling aspect of our society.

"Whether I were black or white, I think me commenting on this and hopefully contributing to constructive, not negative, (discussion) ... is part of my portfolio," Obama said.

As for the teachable moment, he said we need to spend "a little more time listening to each other, and focus on how we can generally improve relationships between police officers and minority communities."

He also said Crowley suggested that he, the president and Gates meet over a beer in the White House. Obama said it hasn't been scheduled, but seemed open to the idea.

Crowley apparently asked Obama how to get reporters off his lawn.

"I informed him I can't get the press off my lawn. He pointed out my lawn is bigger than his lawn," he said, to laughter from the press corps. "Sgt. Crowley would be happy for you to stop trampling his grass."

Obama also joked that no one's been paying much attention to health care because of this story.

I am surprised that he spoke again on this subject.

Whether he should have or not....

I do find it commendable that he spoke with the arresting officer. Can you imagine?

Probably the most succinct summary of the Obama administration as a whole.

Silly man.

Didn't he know it's a crime to enter your own home while wearing dark skin? It's called "blacking and entering".

When I heard the comment at the press conference I thought the prez was being a bit premature and that he might need to revisit. Speaking with the officer was a very nice touch to help bring closure to the incident.

I agree it's a nice touch. But it won't bring "closure" for the wingnuts. Obama unfortunately opened the door a crack, and the Sarah Palin's of the Greedy Oily Party, seeing a glint through that crack, will try to wedge themselves through it until they succeed or die trying.

I personally hope it will be the latter, but I'm not holding my breath.

Sure is nice to have a President who is willing to admit it when he's wrong, tho.

Doing a mighty fun job making lemonade out of lemons here. Suspect he really wished he never said anything in the first place, but given that he did, I think (hope) this is a nice recovery. Expecting to see soon the Gates/Crowley/Obama photo op at the White House.

I'm happy he spoke again on this subject.

I'm happier still that he talked with the police officer involved.

I'm ecstatic that he didn't back down on his original statement, which was not generally reported anywhere near in its entirety. The entire statement made a lot of sense.

I'm deleriously happy that Officer Crowley suggested that the President, Professor, and he get together for a beer. That is the smartest thing that anyone has said about this whole matter. The best possible way for this incident to become a teachable moment is for the Professor and the Officer, working together, to become the teachers.

I totally concur. Officer Crowley's idea is great. And what a photo-op: the three men on the White House lawn after a beer and frank discussion -- that picture 'round the world -- awesome.

Even though I'm critical of many things he & his administration are doing, Obama continues to impress me. It's such a relief to not cringe like I did for 8 years of Bush when I heard him on the tube.

Amen! (on the not-cringing part, that is) It still comes as a shock - a very welcome one - when Obama takes one of these oh-here-we-go-again moments where it seems like everything is going to sink down to the lowest common denominator and spins and twirls it in some Fred Astaire move to a totally different place.

You'll never convince me that a majority of Americans - liberals and conservatives, Republicans and Democrats - didn't silently cheer and say (or think) a profound "Thank you" to Obama for sparing them the predictable next few weeks of inconclusive outrage and punditry. People are losing their jobs and going without health care and sending their sons and daughters to war and losing their life savings, for goodness sake! I'd wager that 90% of the people in this country know that sometimes the best cops can overreact and frequently tired older men, of whatever color, get cranky ... and that another instance of those things happening is simply NOT more important or worthy of comment than the other, very real and critical problems we face.

What a good action by the Prez. Now, perhaps Professor Gates can follow and chat with the officer. They might have more in common than they thought.

Really can't resist the Tiger Woods comparison, banal as it is most of the time: Obama shanked his usually-powerful drive into the trees in answering the Gates question at the press conference (IMO). But damned if he didn't make par with that last chip shot from the sand trap.

What a class act our President is. he knew he had to speak again on the subject because he knows what a bunch of idiots our MSM is and how they love to harangue on a subject

I will say I wish the Cambridge Police and their union had as much class. Their press conference today was very telling about who these racists really are.

Obama rose above the fray and invited Gates and Crowley for a beer.

How fricking lucky are we to have this man as our President???

Number One. When I first heard the account of the incident events and subsequent arrest, I was particularly interested that the police officer repeatedly requested Gates to please step out of the house. "... to please step out of the house." Several times. Evidently, he wanted to arrest Gates, and "stepping out of the house", after establishing the fact of his residency, was to get him into the Public for arrest purposes. Rather disingenuous. Gates should have remained in his house and the officer would probably gone about his business, pissed as he may have been.
Number Two. A reminder to all, as has been oft stated for many, many years: You can beat the rap, but not the ride. Exactly what happened to Gates. That an apology was issued first by the police department, speaks volumes as to the efficacy of the arrest itself. But you can't beat the ride! My father was a cop, my brother in law was a cop, my cousin was a copy and many neighbors were cops. They know what power they wield in taking someone for "the ride" though many times unnecessary. It's (largely) their prerogative. And it is the use of personal power that the badge provides. What police in general have not gotten in many cities is that this prerogative should be used with the utmost of sound judgement., especially when dealing with minorities who have been "wrongly" taken on "the ride" numerous times over the course of one's life. Police should remember that in exercising this prerogative, it is also inflammatory, and more so given the history in this country where "the ride" meant death.

Yes, hopefully, it will teach you to keep your mouth shut when you don't have any idea what you're talking about. The big O comes out, says I don't have the facts but I'm going to make a statement in defense of my black friend. Good job Obama. Even the black officer on the scene said it was by the book.

On Morning Joe yesterday, Mika Brzezinski made one of the more ignorant and racist statements I have heard in the mainstream media in quite sometime.

Here is a clip.

Watching the video of the response makes you want to cry and laugh with relief. Folks, this is as good it gets. Obama is not going to get it right on everything, but you have got give him credit for being thoughtful, non-confrontational, and just plain smart. Enjoy this Presidency with its ups and downs and unscheduled appearances to the press corp! It's not going to get any better than this.
