Sarah Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein (the one who threatened to sue several news organizations for allegedly defaming his client) just spoke with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC. Mitchell asked him if Palin was upset that critics called her speech "rambling."
Well, I don't think she's upset. What I think is, she sees it as the standard criticism that she receives....She's actually very articulate. I didn't find her speech rambling at all. She laid out exactly the reasons she had for stepping down and it was really a form of self-sacrifice. She has become the issue. The state of Alaska has been spending money on public records requests, defending or investigating ethics acts with the personnel board.
So, the official word from the Palin camp remains that she's taking one for the team, stepping aside so Alaskan taxpayers can save some cash.
Van Flein also denied rumors that she's leaving office for the money she could make on, say, a speaking tour. She has different plans, he said.
"She's taking the battle on a different battlefield...She's gonna help conservative candidates that she supports for the 2010 elections," he said.

She laid out EXACTLY the reasons. Except for that she didn't. But it's nice for her handlers to keep calling us stupid pieces of shit because we won't accept them calling black white and short tall.

i think its time to stop responding to this stuff.
the wing-nuts believe anything she says and she wants to aggitate everyone else for the attention.
i still believe at the bottom of all this is the fact she was told and finally realizes she has no place on the national ticket for the republicans in the future.
my bet is she intends to milk it for as much money as she can and play it by ear.
her lasting contribution will be to demonstrate how low the bar is this country for politicains and the intellect of a part of the people.

They keep saying that she can't get sued once she leaves office. Is that true? If so, why is it costing her so much personally to fight ethics violations regarding her term as governor? If someone can sue her personally, you'd think those charges would persist after she stepped down, and otherwise you'd think the state would have to pay to defend her.

Only Alaskans don't pay state taxes.
She was happy to dish out $1 billion in "Energy Rebates" to Alaskans instead of speaking out about the out-of-control heating fuel prices. She was all too happy to speak out as a "private" citizen to endorse the Pebble Mine project - but not about the consistent gouging of Alaska's citizens through gas/diesel/heating fuel prices.
She bailed because the good times have come to an end. She barely got the Capital Spending Budget out LAST year when the state had a massive surplus, (needed Todd's help to write it - WTF???) I can't imagine she's looking forward to some "actual" budgeting where you don't have enough money to cover your costs.
BTW, REAL working class people don't have the luxury of quitting their job just because it gets hard. Many stay in thankless, low paying jobs to keep shitty health insurance for their families.
About 30,000 people commute to Anchorage from Wasilla every single day, most have done it for years - I know my family has done it for a decade.
Her husband commutes to the North Slope every couple of weeks - and he's been able to continue governing the state without a problem =-)

So 30K folks commute from Wasilla to Anchorage each day? But I thought the population of Wasilla was like 6K. How's that work?

Well over 80,000 people live in the Matanuska Susitna Valley as a whole.
If the Mat-Su borough were a county it would be the largest in the country.
Wasilla, is kind of like a truckstop, it is the center of commerce but not many live within the city limits.
I think the larger Palin scandal is her internal push to move legislative sessions TO Wasilla because its been a big issue here to move the state capital onto the road system, (vs. Juneau the island). This is an issue that has been voted on and defeated - so her attempts to move the capital WITHOUT voter approval would be a huge scandal in Alaska, and a very uniquely Alaskan issue so not likely to make a big Media splash.
Palin is just now understanding that all politics are local.
I myself live exactly 60 ft outside the city limits =-)but I still have a "Wasilla" address.
FYI The huge numbers of commuters is what prompted the scheme to build a bridge because as it stands now there is only one 4-lane highway from Wasilla to Anchorage.

Has anyone pointed out to Palin that there are plenty of governors (and various other public officials) who DON'T spend lots of money on ethics-related litigation? You know, the ones that behave ethically?

I also enjoyed her perspective of the ethics suits: "these people came up here and abused the ethics legislation that I championed, and now they're costing the state millions." There seems to be absolutely no self-awareness at all...no understanding of the fact that her statement could have easily been rephrased, "the ethics legislation I championed is costing the state millions."

The reason she needs to spend so much money on ethics investigations is because her ACCUSERS possess bad ethics? Not following the logic of her lawyer's charges.

It shocks me that anyone finds garbage like this as something new. Whenever possible, people will always try and rewrite history.
Mika Brzezinski in this clip does something similar in the sense that she is trying to make excuses for Palin, and really being dishonest in the process.
If you didn't like Mika Brzezinski before, you will hate her after watching this clip.

I had been contemplating what I'd thought were the 3 most likely reasons why Palin abruptly quit. One was "huge scandal about to break." The second was the politically unwise and inadvisable "getting ready to run for prez in '12". And the third was "cash in quick and massively before fame fades."
Given her behavior during and especially after the 2008 presidential election, and with the apparent senselessness of this resignation, I'm now wondering if mental instability isn't also a distinct possibility. I don't think I've ever seen a politician act so erratically and consistently against their own best interests, while at the same time bolstering their egos with ill-advised stunts. (Like that Runner's World interview and cheese-cake photo spread -- there was no dignity in that whatsoever.)

She told us exactly what she was up to in voicing her basketball analogy. She is the point guard (i.e., she is running the team or party), and she sees the full court press by the opposition (liberal media and democrats). Now being the smart guard she is, she pulls off this incredible feat of deception (by resigning) all the while blowing past the opposition to score and win the game (the presidency). How else could you interpret this sport's metaphor?

Of course, the correct basketball analogy would be that she's the point guard who somehow made it onto the basketball team (coach's son? favor for a friend?), who somehow makes it into the game at the end of the final playoff game... and proceeds to throw up four or five airballs in a row to lose the game, and then next season expects to be put in the exact same position again and gets incredibly offended and pissed off at anybody that suggests maybe they don't deserve it.

I watched the Mitchell interview and was literally embarrassed for her.
I was also angry because it was a huge waste of my time.
Mitchell had an exclusive interview with Van Flein and she didn't ask a single question about his threat to sue other reporters and media outlets, including MSNBC.
How does Mitchell's interview with Van Flein constitute legitimate reporting by a professional journalist?

I think witty1 nailed it. Palin quitting is like a company insider selling all their stock in the company. Alaska may be headed for some budget problems and Palin doesn't want those problems to show up on her resume. In Palin's twisted logic, the solution is to quit the governorship. Then when Alaska runs out of money, Palin will claim it was not her fault.

I wonder if she somehow got some horrible poll numbers (related to her re-election), and obviously made the simple conclusion that it would be impossible to run for president if she couldn't even win a governorship in her own home state.
I think the larger takeaway from anything she does is that there really is no logic underlying anything, and to really try to get to the bottom of what's happening is completely pointless and will only serve to drive you crazy.

I still think there is a legitimate family excuse for Palin leaving office, but she's thrown up this smoke screen of speculation about her reasons for leaving to protect the family member. It's the only thing that makes sense. It explains the last minute switch from not running to resigning, as well as the hastily constructed excuses.
Notice that she has already dropped out of site, ostensibly to go "fishing", and that the whole family is MIA, as well. (watch for one of the daughters to be missing for much longer, perhaps a month, to as much as a year)
(one month = D&C, one year, delivery and recuperation)
Her political career was over the moment she quit, and judging from the reaction of establishment doyens, they're not about to let her drag the party down further.
She'll keep the book deal, she'll make some speeches, but, come election time, the only time you hear her name will be when they use it to explain the "comparatively MODERATE" positions of Jeb Bush.
Or, even Joe Scarborough.
