Michael Steele, chairman of the RNC, doesn't seem to know the basic terminology of the health care debate.
In a Q&A at the National Press Club just now, Steele was asked if Republicans support an individual requirement to get health care (also known as an individual mandate).
"What do you mean by an individual requirement?" he asked the moderator. After she explained, he dodged the question.
"Again, that is one of those areas where there is different opinions...I don't do policy," he said. "My point in coming here today was to begin to set a tone, and a theme if you will."
Steele was taking questions after giving a speech on health care reform, in which he characterized President Obama's plan as a "reckless experiment" that's "too much, too fast, too soon."

Just think, the more people the repub party can kill by stopping healthcare reform, the happier they'll be. They care about nothing but big business and ignorant rednecks.

They care about ignorant rednecks? To the extent they continue to stupidly vote for them, perhaps. Enough to actually do something for them? Not so much.

"As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down." - Republican activist/strategist Paul Weyrich.
So yes, you're quite right. Fewer poor/working class people surviving health problems -> a smaller, more upscale electorate -> better electoral prospects for conservatives.

For those of you who are having a typical Monday and need a chuckle, HuffPo Comedy Writer John Marshall must have had a great weekend as he gives you his take on MSteel...and it is worth a quick read on your lunch hour. Me, I'm retired...lunch break starts about 6AM!

Sounds like a good Republican to me. Facts? What are those? I'm trying to paint a picture here, don't bother me with specifics. I have no idea what's actually being proposed, but it's my job to tell you it's a bad idea, so here we are.

Yeah, why would a politician do policy? It's like expecting a dentist to do dentistry, or a theologian to do theology, or....uh, never mind.

Once again, Steele is tone-deaf and clueless, a perfect spokesman for the tone-deaf and clueless insurgents who have no ideas beyond intoning Ronal' Reagan.
Republicans should change their mascot from elephant to seagull. Seagulls fly in, make a lot of noise and shit all over everything.

You know, it really in the end doesn't matter if he doesn't understand the details, doesn't know them. It really doesn't. Most people don't know the details, most people aren't going to pay attention, and it's all about branding. I realize I'm being a little cynical here, but it's probably preferential for the GOP that Michael Steele understand as little as possible and that he does so with willful ignorance out of a desire for political power.
He's the guy they've picked to sell things, and the move to put him there is probably less comedy and accident than we've all been assuming.

Yeah, you know Billy the thing is last week he was talking about bringing diverse people to the party with "fried Chicken and Potato salad", so yeah he does not really give a shit about the details, his job is simply to not understand a whole lot about any particular subject but to have an influence on the optics of any number of issues. And hey, you might be cynical but if our country and the people who live in it would rather listen to "framing" rather than take the time to participate in the civic process because that is what is 'most' easy for 'most Americans' as you say then I am afraid we are all doomed. Not to be too much of cynic back at you but I have more faith in the American people after 8 years of Bush, than I have had in a long time. According to the latest poll numbers 'most Americans' want universal health-care and 'most Americans' want health-care reform, but unlike you I can not speak for all of them. From my perspective the difference between those that are asking for a delay as well as those that are asking for more time is where you start your conversation from.
The question for me becomes, "do you believe that health-care policy (which includes all of medicare/medicade, the VA and private marketplace) as it is today (status quo) is sustainable? For me the short answer is NO, and in the long answer includes things like avoiding sweeteners that will push the problem down the road, we need something close to single payer. I am pretty sure we can all admit with some chutzpah that the GOP is not in the business of real reform but are merely defending the status-quo as well as the upper echelon of our US Tax Bracket.

What is morally irresponsible is get on the House floor and spew hyperbole implying that Obama's mother may have had an abortion if they were free.
Rep. Tiahrt should be reprimanded for his comments.

Give the guy a break. He doesn't "do" policy. He comments on policy. Obama's policy. Which is bad. He knows it's bad, because it's Obama. It's really quite simple - painfully simple, pathetically simple.

The sad thing here is that it isn't just Steele. No one in the GOP Congressional Caucus seems to know anything about anything either. They've just been told to fight, stall, delay and obstruct. They may not even know why they're suppose to do it.
They're just following orders.

Repubs are dangerously close to imploding over their Obama Derangement Syndrome. This is about governing and legislating for constituents and the Americans who cannot afford health coverage.
Instead, for the GOP, it is all about "getting" Obama ... Rather vulgar, I think ...

Palin-Steele in 2012. My first thought was, what could be more hilarious to watch? Dumb and Dumb-ass. (Not sure which is which.) Then I remembered how the press ignored McCain's blunders during Obama's European tour (Joe Lieberman became his fact-fixer)and the fact that George W. was re-elected. Not so funny if they won. Still, I'd love to see the YouTube videos.

OF COURSE Michael Steele doesn't do policy.
He's the head of the REPUBLICAN National Committee, and the Republican Party has taken a sacred vow (almost as sacred as a C St vow) NOT to do policy.
If he tried to do policy, they'd fire him, he'd lose his health insurance, and he'd see what all this is about. Then he'd re-register as a Democrat.
