Ernest Hancock, the online radio host who interviewed the man with the assault rifle outside yesterday's Obama event in Arizona, today stated that the whole event was actually planned in advance. Watch the video below.
Hancock appeared on Rick Sanchez's CNN show this afternoon. After explaining a few details about the interview, including the tidbit that he's known 'Chris' (the man with the AR-15) for two years because of their mutual work for Ron Paul, the CNN host said "the more we look into this, the more it appears that it was really planned."
"Oh, it's more planned than you think," Hancock responded. He then let loose with a string of details, including how Hancock contacted the Phoenix police department days before the event and how he was partially motivated to do so because of the controversy surrounding William Kostric, the man armed with a gun outside of Obama's town hall in New Hampshire last week.
We worked with the Phoenix police department. They came down to our studio on Friday. We've gone through this with them for 15 years. They have a squad - used to be called the confrontation prevention squad, now called community service. We told them that we're going to come down, I'm going to do the radio show live, we're going to be broadcasting it, and I'm going to have a firearm. I had a 9 millimeter on myself...
It was Thursday that I called and talked to Al Ramirez, the representative from the Phoenix police department, and we were discussing - we've been around this rhetoric that was building up around William Kostric, who did this in New Hampshire. We knew this from 15 years ago when Janet Napolitano was a U.S. Assistant Attorney and prosecuted the Viper Militia out of Arizona, and how that was generated into something it wasn't. We talked to Al and we were like, look, we know where this is going and we want to make sure, we come down, we're peaceful, and we demonstrate the right of the people to carry their firearms. And the police protected our right.
They wanted to help - they assigned him [a police officer] to me. He was never more than 4-5 feet away from me. We had law enforcement around us to protect our rights to protect this firearm.
In the 8-minute interview, Sanchez did not bring up the issue of the incident taking place at a presidential event. There was also no discussion on the other dozen people who were reportedly armed at Obama's VFW event in Phoenix.
Most of the interview was spent in a back-and-forth between the two men on the planning of the event, and whether what Hancock did was 'disingenuous' as a 'publicity stunt.' Hancock also appeared to make a small reference to astroturf/tea party activists when he said "you have these people coming in by the busload, there to create a scandal" but for his and Chris's part, "we're all friends, we were having a good time, and the event was more peaceful."
Here's the rest of the interview:
Sanchez: A lot of people are going to look at this and say it was a publicity stunt.Hancock: Absolutely - you guys are so easy. What we wanted to do was make sure that people around the country knew that law enforcement in Phoenix, Arizona protects our rights. Oftentimes, the citizenry are better armed than law enforcement. They need us on their side. We know what we're up against.
Sanchez: You're the only ones there with weapons. What are you up against? Ladies with brooms?
Hancock: Oh no, no, no, we're up against a tyrannical government that will rob the next generation as long as they can get away with it. If you go to Freedomsphoenix.com, the top story is the interview I had with this young man. Quite simply, [Chris] understands that his generation is going to be plundered until there's nothing left to plunder. When you do that, at some point, there will be resistance.
Sanchez: Where is Chris, by the way?
Hancock: Hiding from you.
Sanchez: The only thing I'm questioning is whether you have to do it in such a disingenuous way - it was a fake interview with fake circumstances.
Hancock: We made it very clear that we knew each other on the video - I see him all the time.
Sanchez: Does [Chris] really believe this stuff? Because the way he was laughing in the video-
Hancock: If you're not having fun advocating for freedom, you're doing it wrong.

"We had law enforcement around us to protect our rights to protect this firearm."
Priceless. Not protecting home, family, property, or the Constitution, but protecting the firearm itself. Not really a gun to these guys. It's a totem, or more likely, a fetish. But it ain't a gun.

Wait a minute, these people get the police to protect them so they can bear arms to protect themselves from the police (ie. the government)?
WTF?
Meanwhile, the statement "They wanted to help - they assigned him [a police officer] to me. He was never more than 4-5 feet away from me" is just pure-D funny. I doubt it was HIM they were there to help. If the police weren't in full communication with the Secret Service, they (the police) can certainly expect a visit from the Secret Service PDQ.

I knew when the first "patriot" showed up with a gun and nothing happened this kind of thing would snowball. Every no brain nut will bring guns if they don't stop it. If I brought a gun to a doctor's appointment they would call the police. If I brought one to a library they would call the police. If I brought one to the bank they would for sure call the police AFTER I was forced to the ground with a gun to my head. If I had brought one to a Bush town hall I for sure would have been arrested and probably sent to Gitmo. There is such a thing in the law as intent. If you bring one to an event with the president of the US how can anyone not believe there is a clear threat here? Do they have to pull the gun to make it real? Are they not responding for fear that will become a new cause? How can they claim they are coming to these events and just happen to have their guns with them? Did they run all their errands that morning with firearms? Hardware store, dry cleaners, gas station? The fact that they equate still having their "rights" regarding guns with losing them with health care let's you know they just don't get it. Why don't they bring various symbolic constitutional and states rights and legal items they are entitled to with them they feel demonstrate other rights. How about someone pregnant who won't have an abortion as your date and she can have a gun too, and open bottle of liquor if you're over 21, your voters registration card, various religious paraphenalia, etc. etc. This crap needs to stop.

Somebody (maybe TPM?) needs to pose a couple basic questions to Hancock:
Please explain how citizens carrying firearms outside of Presidential public events will stop the "tyrannical government" from "robbing the next generation"?
In other words, walk us through the chain of events you are envisioning that would create a cause-and-effect relationship between "gun-toting citizens" and "stopping the tyrannical government."
I honestly would like to see them clarify exactly where their effort goes.

The more people who carry guns at such events, the more people the secret service and local cops have to keep track of, then the easier it will be for a real assassin to get overlooked or given insufficient attention - and maybe that's exactly what these wingers are hoping for, to be such a distraction that an opportunity will occur for a truly intent person to do what they only wish in their hearts they could do.

I love that these brainiacs (along with the rest of the GOP) always seem to disconnect the Department of Defense from the government. Guess what hotshot... your 9mm is not going to be all that effective against the 82nd Airborne. I have always found that argument of protecting yourself from tyrannical government to be laughable.

I think the Phoenix Police Department needs to be investigated by the Secret Service. They should have said "bring a gun to a presidential event, get arrested, and you get your lawyers and we'll get ours." In fact I can't understand why the Secret Service isn't doing the same thing. Constitutional or not, they could keep these guys tied up in court for years and years. Sooner or later they'd run out of money to keep fighting.

So what should they be investigated for? Possibly for NOT violating this clowns Civil Rights?
Arizona is a right to carry state so as long as buttwipe was not doing anything aggressive then there was no reason to go after him. As far as your comments about going after him, they are exactly what these guys preach that the current Administration is doing! Additionally are YOU willing to pay the millions in settlements for the Cops harassing them? Additionally do something like you suggest and Not only will the NRA pay for their defense the ACLU will help to. Your comments are no different from the mouth breathers that supported Bush, if it's a right you don't like then it's not a right worth having.
All of you keep up these comments since it only empowers the idiots and makes them think they are doing something right and feeds the propaganda they get about Obama taking their Guns.

These guys will be responsible for the bloodshed that it to come. I will not accept their argument that they had nothing to do with the coming violence. They are pouring as on the fire. They are distracting resources needed to protect the Commander-in-Chief because they wish to take a whimsical stroll with an AR-15 and expect people to ignore them, all the while eager to grab the attention. These distractions make the President's visits more dangerous. There people are sick.

Didn't these guys specifically say in their interviews that they were against Taxes? If so wouldn't this run against their claims, "They wanted to help - they assigned him [a police officer] to me. He was never more than 4-5 feet away from me. We had law enforcement around us to protect our rights to protect this firearm."
I mean if Phoenix PD had to assign a special officer just for these two guys, that either meant taking away resources from other aspect of security for the event or adding resources. well God knows the police do not work for free, in fact they are paid by our tax dollars. So in other words these guys cost the tax-payers more tax dollars (even if it is small) or they diverted funds from general security to these particular gentlemen. Please TPM call these "no taxes" blowhards for taxing the people of Phoenix so they could show off their weapons. Oh and by the way the standards used to guarantee the performance of that weapon, sure enough more tax dollars spent for these yahoo's!

Chris said "all taxes are theft", while a taxpayer-supported police officer protected him. All irony is lost on these fanatics.

I remember how afraid the officials were of protesters just carrying signs for the Republican convention. It would be within my constitutional rights to use the same stuff Boehner uses on his skin, so I could get extra-swarthy, wear a turban on my head, and a t-shirt saying I heart Osama. I could then go around various large cities, photographing large structures and bridges. Similarly, freedom of the press would allow me to dress up like that and photograph Republican politicians. I'm sure if I called local police beforehand and explained how I had freedom of the press and was innocent until proven guilty as per the constituiton and that the declaration of independence stated that my pursuit of happiness was important, they'd give me an armed detail to protect my right to be a flaming ass.
