Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) wouldn't denounce bringing guns to town halls at one of his own town halls in Cherokee, Iowa, on Wednesday.

An audience member asked Grassley if he would publicly denounce the gun-toters, writes an Iowa resident who blogs at TableTopTalk.

The senator replied, "We need a more civil society and we need the kind of civility that Jesus spoke about when he used the word agape: interest and seeking the highest good and welfare of the other person."

Grassley's office has confirmed the account.

What kind of political discourse occurs under the threat of an assault rifle. Had we seen comrades carrying AK47's at a political discussions in the Soviet era, these same people would decry how the totalitarians/communists were repressing their people and not practicing free democratic politics. I'm afraid that there really are people out there ready to start a violent revolution to overturn the past election for no other reason than that the President is not white. Senator Grassley has lost any credibility over the last month embracing the "birther question" and the "death panel" - really he could have believed but kept quiet - but no , he had to subscribe to the wingnut, in your face, lying GOP. So long to your many years of honorable service, now down the drain so you could echo the lies of your party!
I hope this is the end of your political career!
