The former mistress of John Edwards arrived at a federal courthouse in Raleigh, N.C., this morning, reports the Associated Press. Rielle Hunter is presumably testifying to a grand jury.

In video shown on CNN, Hunter had her daughter with her as she entered the courthouse.

Edwards has admitted a grand jury is investigating his use of campaign funds, but the U.S. Attorney's office in North Carolina won't confirm or deny an investigation. Edwards's political action committee paid Hunter's video production firm $100,000 in 2006, and another $14,086 in April 2007. Edwards said he ended the affair in 2006.

Late update: And here's the video.

I probably gave more money to John Edwards than Clinton or Obama combined. I still think he would have been a great advocate to have for the Democartic wing of the Democratic Party. It is a shame for Elizabeth and Ms Hunter as well as the children involved. I could care less if he paid her with campaign dollars. I just wish he could have done everything in his power to realize Elizabeth was his meal ticket and not the other way around. Damn penises, they get us in trouble too, too much!!

"Democratic wing of the Democratic Party" my Aunt Fannie. Edwards is and was an opportunistic hack who would sell out any constituency for political gain -- just ask the NC soldiers shipped off to Iraq after his cowardly Iraq war vote during his single senate term. If he illegally shoveled campaign money toward his side salad, he should be held accountable.

John Kerry voted the same way. So did Hillary Clinton. Who did you vote for in 2004? A person's sexual flaws have absolutely zero to do with the work involved in being a solid representative. John Edwards cast that vote in October of 2002. He regretted it but even if he had voted against it it would not have stopped Bush. The man is a good and decent human being that comitted a horrible indiscretion against his wife. Who would be are poltical leaders and heroes if that was the tipping point? I hope Obama never makes the mistake so many with his type of power have.

I held my nose and voted for Kerry, just as I would have held my nose and voted for Edwards had he won the Dem primary. Thankfully, he did not. His "sexual flaws" (as you call them) are between him and his wife. But if he illegally used campaign funds to enrich Ms. Hunter, he should be held accountable. Period.

He will be held accountable but I don't think what he did denigrates the message of his whole campaign. Bill Clinton was a GREAT president who for far too many people will only be remebered as a philanderer. That is my problem with all of this. I bet you he wouldn't cave on not having a public option if he were president. Watch it happen with this president. To all of our regrets.

Edwards had a very conservative voting record in the U.S. Senate. I know we like to forget these things because he had very nice campaign speeches and because he claimed he wanted to end poverty and the like, but, look, he was pretty conservative. It was not just on the war in Iraq. There was that one democratic debate where Edwards essentially overturned like five or six of his positions in the Senate.

Yes, he voted for Iraq.
Yes, he voted for bankruptcy.
Yes, he voted for various free trade agreements, etc.

His affair is an extension of his overall personality. He's smooth. Does he care about the issues he claims he cares about? To some extent, yes, but I do think he's one of these smooth politicians who will tell you what you want to hear.

I am starting to think Edwards is sort of the Democrats version of Sarah Palin appealing but not qualified for public office.

Where are the investigations to Ensign’s payments to his mistress? Are the democrats the only ones who can’t figure out how not to get investigated? So lame. Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Gonzalez figured it out.

Edwards has shown himself to be as reckless as McCain and Gary Hart. It just manifests a little differently.

She drags the kid into this mess in front of all these cameras and stuff? Wow, that is just great for her as a parent. You just can't say enough about people who care about their children that much. Just... wow.

To think during last years primary I had to listen to half a year of "Edwards is the real progressive" for this?

Oh, Edwards! Why did you have to succumb to the fate of so many other politicians? Can you imagine what would happen if Obama had an affair? It would be absolutely bananas.
