White House officials today went on the offensive, trying to discredit the town hall protesters and promising to aggressively fight misinformation campaigns.
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters he believes some of the anger at the health care meetings is manufactured by groups that are "very involved in the status quo."
"You've had groups today, the Conservatives for Patients' Rights, that have bragged about organizing and manufacturing that anger," Gibbs said today during his press briefing.
"I think what you've seen is they've bragged about manufacturing, to some degree, that anger. I think you've got somebody who's very involved, a leader of that group that's very involved in the status quo," he added, referring to Rick Scott. "That's a lot of what you need to know about the motives of that group."
David Axelrod, a senior adviser to the president, said the administration would "aggressively" respond to misinformation about health care reform.
"Health insurance reform is an issue that lends itself to fear mongering, lends itself to distortion, and lends itself to misinformation. Where we see it, we're going to respond to it aggressively," Axelrod said during an interview with MSNBC today. "The American people need to know the facts, and we're gonna make sure they have the facts. We're not gonna allow anyone to distort those facts."
Health care reform, he said, "won't get done if we're passive in the face of misinformation campaigns."

I'm sure denouncing them to reporters has the wingnuts quaking in their boots. They (the White House) are being tactically outmaneuvered because instead of seizing the intiative they are allowing the tea baggers to be on the initiative and drive the debate. Sad.

I am not so sure they are being outmaneuvered. These people unfortunately have more time than the President but I blame the DNC for not being more organized to have people at the Town Hall Meetings to counteract these whackjobs

The dnc and the White House are for all intents and purposes the same thing. The DNC is coordinated with everything coming out of 1600 Penn.

Union members, Labor, 49ers or Block Layers would be good people to invite to your town halls. They just need to line up face to face with the Tea Baggers. Had card check been passed it'd be very simple to call the Local Union hall and have them alert a few members to show up. Now it might not be as easy as that.

I am not really sure how they are supposed to respond to these interruptions because from what I have seen the audience in many cases will not let them finish speaking. My sincere question is why does a student at Florida get tasered while interrupting a John Kerry event, yet these yahoo's don't get the same treatment? Is it an age thing? Is it a campus thing? What the hell? I am in no way advocating a more aggressive police or security response to citizens complaints, but how can you have a question and answer session if the crowd does not want to hear either? If I were a rep, I would just tell everyone in attendance that there can be no video recording devices in these town halls, that way the only attention gotten would be from newspapers (which no one apparently reads if you look at the economics) and from blogs.

No video recordings is an interesting idea; that would certainly dial down the attention-getting they're trying to generate.
But if you won't call for more aggressive security, I will. Disruptive participants should be escorted out of the hall and not allowed back in. Period. If they won't leave peacefully, then they should be arrested for disturbing the peace. They are trampling on the rights of the rest of the crowd to speak their minds and have their questions answered.

I think that's called "disturbing the peace" in a lot of communities, such as Cambridge, MA. I'm sure it's serendipity, but I'm going to make sure I've stocked up on popcorn. And act like it's rope-a-dope if my conservative friends start getting outraged about protesters getting themselves arrested.

I have a feeling the GOP is going to overplay its hand as usual. The Brooks Bros. riots only work so far before people start getting annoyed with them.
Wishful thinking perhaps?

Let them keep it up. They look like idiots and now that Gibbs and other White House suits are drawing attention to the astroturf nature of the exercise, it should compel the media to finally call it what it is instead of meekly reporting it as spontaneous protests by constituents.

To some extent, I think we should allow the teabaggers to get some coverage, yelling and out of control. And then we should start saying that the Republicans have been taken over by these Teabaggers and start referencing the Republican party as the Teabagger Party. In other words, force ownership of the Teabaggers and Birthers on the Republicans. Let them become the face of the GOP.
But to think this is not engineered by the health industry would be naive. They obviously worked to get a delay in Congress and then met or had someone meet with the leadership of these anti-government groups to organize protests and chaos. It would be interesting to know who their health providers are because by the looks of many of them, I would guess medicaire.

It's ridiculous for Axelrod or Gibbs to be saying anything about these anti-reformers. Instead, they need to make sure that when Steny Hoyer speaks, there are 100 organizers on our side in his presence. When Patrick Murphy speaks, there are 150 organizers on our side in his presence.
What's needed is better organization. The reason we won the election was not because we called out those who disliked Obama to the point where they claimed he was a terrorist. We won because we convinced some on the other side that Obama was right on the issues. If we get health care passed, it's going to be because we convince Ben Nelson, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Arlen Specter and a coupe of House Democrats that are on the fence that it's critical that we reform health care now.
We can't do that by claiming these wingnuts are intimidating people at town halls. Yes, those who refuse to follow the rules of given town halls need to be removed. But, those who simply show up and voice their opposition should not be villified. They should be challenged both by our representative and by others that are at the Town Hall.

Right wing agitators. Insurance company flacks and dupes with tea bags over their heads. And, oh yes, the Rethuglicans think it is a fine and dandy game for their supporters to commit disorderly conduct. What else is new?

Well - first, I'd say that the Obama political shop's tactical specialty is the rope-a-dope. I think the Democratic plan was to ride the honeymoon to a quick passage of legislation, but by no means do I think Axelrod and company are worried they have to go the longer route.
The key will be how they counterpunch. Shining a bright light on shouters, screamers, nazi sign carriers, and people that don't know Medicare is a government program isn't a counterpunch... that's the let your opponent punch himself into irrelevance part.
They'll still need to sell a program. I get hints of it, so maybe it's coming, but the fact that Medicare is more cost effective and boasts much higher beneficiary satisfaction compared to private insurance seems like a good start.
Hell... sell it right and clearly - and you might see more people upset we're NOT getting single payer.
The key to a good bill is making sure the debate happens on our turf. In this case, our turf is nicely supplemented by having the facts on its side.
