The following statement was released by the White House early Wednesday morning.
THE WHITE HOUSEOffice of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
August 26, 2009Statement from President Obama:
Michelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.
For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts.
I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom.
An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.
And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad.
Our hearts and prayers go out to them today--to his wonderful wife, Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his extended family.

I'm having a very hard time wrapping my mind around this tragedy. It seems like some people should live forever. He seemed more than flesh and blood.

He was Senator for (much) longer than I've been alive. It's weird to imagine the Senate without him.

The Kennedys always seemed to me to be a political dynasty even though outside of Massachusetts it was really only a single generation, just Bobby, Jack and Ted. Larger than life.

If anything, an understatement.
Now we've got to redouble our efforts to enlarge his legacy even further by enacting real health care reform this year.

AGREE. Real health care reform, the one final goal he worked for and hasn't lived to see.

Tragic that he could not be part of Obama's push for health care. Let's hope that Teddy's passing inspires Obama and Congressional Dems to redouble their efforts and succeed where so many other Democratic administrations have failed - passing real, comprehensive health care reform which guarantees health care to EVERY American, INCLUDING a public option.

Yes. They should rename the House bill and the Senate HELP bill (but NOT the Baucus epic failure) the Kennedy Act.

On the radio I heard an obit this morning that called him "the most politically powerfull non-president in american history since Ben Franklin".
That about sums it up.
