Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) said today that if Democrats pass health care reform without Republican support, they'll suffer losses in the 2010 election cycle.
"If we get into this kind of backroom shenanigans, I think the American people are going to throw them out of office -- and they should," DeMint said on CNBC.
Even President Obama political standing would be damaged, he said.
"If he passes this without any Republican support -- or really, any American support -- I think it's going to hurt his presidency," he said.
DeMint is the senator who said health care reform would be Obama's "Waterloo."

Oh No, the threat of losses from a guy whose party was severely whacked in '06 and '08, despite their predictions to the contrary.
How much stupider does this regional southern party want to look to rest of the country?

I don't think DeMint cares what any of this looks like to anyone except republicans. He really believes that Obama got elected because republicans weren't "conservative" enough. I don't think he really cares much about anything except re-election and his bank account.

this is exactly what they're afraid of. Pass the bill without a single R, and then hang them with it. It isn't hard to do.

At this point, if a Republican said the sky was blue, I'd go out and check for myself. And any discussion of the perils of "going it alone" is hilarious coming from the party that wanted to change the Senate rules so they could "go it alone" MORE.

Going it alone won't hurt Democrats even a little.
Having at least sixty cents of every dollar donated by insurance companies to campaigns, going to Republicans, surely will. But if we didn't expect that in advance, then we probably shouldn't have made that issue a cornerstone for most of our races for national offices.
