Police reportedly arrested a man and escorted a 52-year-old woman out of Sen. Claire McCaskill's health care town hall today in Hillsboro, Mo.

The Associated Press reports that the woman, Maxine Johnson of St. Louis, brought in a sign with a picture of Rosa Parks and the words, "First Lady of Civil Rights." Signs were not allowed at the event.

A man, who was not identified, allegedly ripped the sign. He was reportedly arrested on suspicion of assault. Johnson was then removed from the event by several police officers, but was not arrested.

Here's the video:

After the incident, McCaskill said despite the interruption -- and several incidents when reform opponents shouted her down -- the event had been "a pretty good discussion" and encouraged attendees to spread the word "that this was a good meeting." She said news reports would focus on the disruptions.

The Senator overestimates her ability to handle things like this. She is in waaaaay over her head. She thinks she can march into a hostile crowd of this kind and act like the school principal and teach them all something. Jefferson County is populated in large part by whites who "escaped" from nearby urban areas in order to get away from "those people" many of whom bear a strange resembelance to our President. Not everyone down there is that way but a substantial number are that way and by doing what she did today she teed the ball up for them and let them whack away. For someone with as many years in politics as she has, she is one of the most naive and amateurish pols that ever made it to the US Senate.

I watched this and thought she handled herself very well and always in command. She exhibited a respectful, but no nonsense demeanor.

Interesting that at the conclusion, she asserted that this would be all the media covered about this meeting and that overall it was a good meeting. She was applauded.

She impressed me and did the best job of any member of the Congress in that meeting of the HealthCare Town Halls I have watched.

And you are one of the very few who will have watched the whole thing. The Senator is quite right about the only thing that will be covered and she could easily have aniticipated that would be the case. If the woman from St. Louis hadn't done what she did it would have been nothing but stories about the jeering and sneering crowd.

I agree; from what I have seen of the clips, I thought she handled things very well.

Yes, because she placating their ignorance by going on FAUX "news talking about them being genuine "grassroots" protesters and that they have a legitimate beef with the legislation. There is NO legislation for them to have a beef with. This is faux outrage manufactured by astro-turfers, manipulating the racist among us, who are either in denial or just plain dumb and lacking self-awareness to know their actions are based on racism.

Oleeb - I live two miles from where the meeting was conducted. I and my family moved to Hillsboro because the taxes are lower and the views are better than they were in St. Louis. Please take your bigotry and keep it where the sun doesn't shine, okay?

I was at this meeting, about 8 rows behind the 2 women taken away. The man who took her sign away was one of the health care opponents, she and a friend chased after him to get it back. Police separated them and took them out in opposite directions. You can see police take the guy away at the very beginning of the video. I do not know if anyone was arrested.

I stayed the entire two hours, and the Senator did an excellent job of keeping people from being disruptive. There were a few outbursts, but nothing she couldn't handle. She also got them to applaud her for some of the votes she had taken like opposing Cash for Clunkers 2. But she also got everyone who was on Medicare to raise their hand, then asked them to raise their hand if they wanted to get rid of it. Very few hands went up, point well made.

I wish this point was made more often.

I am disappointed in TPM for running this neagtive header. I expect better from this site.

CNN is doing also exactly what the Senator said they would do - so it's up to us to tell it in context and with honesty.

I think the best thing to do is to learn from this event and quit providing a forum for the teabaggers to disrupt and grab the headlines and the lead on the tv news. In the end that is what it's all about. This is a set of circumstances where the substance is a secondary consideration simply because we know and can predict that substance will be the last thing covered because the "story" is the conflict not the consensus or the statesmanship of the member of Congress. "Rednecks Gon Wild!" is the story every time you give them the venue and set the stage for them and no matter how idiotic they come off, their objective is achieved because the issue of healthcare reform is being pushed aside in favor of covering this trivial, nonsubstantive, corporate sponsored "spontaneous" wave of "angry voters." The corporate media has determined it far too complicated and time consuming to explain to viewers that these crackers are being organized out of a consultants office in DC with millions from corporate interests and that the angry old white people are being completely manipulated and used---willingly perhaps--but they are still being used as nothing but pawns and they are serving their purpose much better than I'm sure anyone on K Street could have dreamed just two weeks ago.

Do us all a favour and spare us your partisan bigotry. You've already demonstrated your racism in the earlier message and now you're busting at the seems to show us all what a fool you are -- "Angry old white people" indeed. Get a life bozo.

If you're sick of the right-wing dominating the health care message, please write a quick email to your representative in support of passing health care legislation this Fall. And emphasize a public option. Click here to go to the link.

Even better, send the note to your Senator by clicking here

Now let's go change the world.

mksbciv - All that, yes, but far more important is to GO TO THESE MEETINGS. Be prepared to out-shout, out-argue, and out-maneuver the insane clown posse; be prepared with high information arguments; be prepared to marginalize the marginal with lung power, numbers, and truth. Most of all, be prepared to contribute to a civil discussion of health care reform. What we're talking about here is not just returning force with force; what's at stake is showing unequivocally that behavior which shuts down civil discourse is unacceptable and WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. So: be prepared, get out of your chair, and GO TO THESE MEETINGS.

Your approach would do more harm than good, Conrad.

I was at this town hall, too. McCaskill did as good a job as could be expected at these things. She was helped by the fact that pro-reform advocates turned out en masse to keep the audience from being saturated with opponents. And by the fact that deputies and campus police were out in force. Could have been worse.

I've done this. My rep (Wally Herger) has form letters that he has already developed on every issue. He's a total bastard. He doesn't give a rip what we think.

Seems strange to me that, the woman's name is made available to the public & the racists who vandalized her property, his name is not made available.
Wow! Why are these bigots being cuddled by the authorities.Seems like 1960's all again.

It's interesting that you mentioned that. I was noticing how the camera automatically followed the black people.

Ripping up a sign of Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks is a no no. What did the guy think was going to happen? Nevermind, I am sure he new exactly what was going to happen, that's why he did it.

It is very interesting to me that because people are not in agreement with the health care reform they are labeled rednecks and racist. I do not understand what Rosa Parks has to do with this. If the rules were no signs, than it would seem to me that the signs were brought in to stir up people. It seems like the people at these meetings are full of many emotions and I can imagine it is because of their circumstances. I have parents who are on medicare and failing in health tremendously. My mothers medicine alone is amazingly high and can not be afforded. They have enlisted help from several government entities and have been turned away. They are on poverties edge but because they don't meet some criteria that the Government sets up they get no help. I truly believe that they are being kicked to the curb and that it would be easier on the Government if they just died. With that said I do not believe that the Government is going to give health care to all. Why would they. They don't help everyone who could really use the help now. They will pick and choose and set up their own criteria. Also people with serious health issues are always turned away when it comes to health care. I know plenty of people who can't get various coverages because they have a heart problem etc. The Government only helps who they want. This is not going to solve my parents problem. Which is the point and agravation that all these people are having. They have serious problems and are hurting. They are not racist.

That is messed up. Pure out and out racist thuggery.

McCaskill did a good job of handling the crowd. But your avg Rep is not this good and shouldn't be doing these events. You have to be tough and in control to pull it off.
