Kimberly Young of Oxford, Ohio, died Wednesday morning a few days short of her 23rd birthday. Hospital officials have said she appeared to have the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

But here's why Young's death is news beyond her southwest Ohio community: people who knew her are saying she resisted treatment that could have saved her life -- because she didn't have health insurance.

And adding to the political resonance: Young's member of Congress is Rep. John Boehner, who as the House Republican leader has led the effort against reform.

Young, a previously healthy 2008 graduate of Miami University of Ohio who lived in Oxford, was diagnosed with swine flu and pneumonia. A few days later, her roommate's mother told a local news channel, she went to an urgent care center. But as her condition continued to worsen, she was reluctant to go to Oxford's McCullough-Hyde Hospital to get proper treatment.

According to the mother, that was because Young "did not have insurance ... After she graduated, she was working a bunch of jobs, but none of them had insurance."

Eventually, after showing signs of kidney failure and dehydration, Young was rushed to McCullough-Hyde, then transferred to University Hospital in Corryville, where she died.

One of Young's jobs was at Oxford's Bagel and Deli Shop. A manager there declined to answer TPMmuckraker's questions about whether health insurance was provided to employees.

It's by no means confirmed that Young's death was caused by a lack of insurance. Even assuming the accuracy of what her roommate's mother said -- that she resisted treatment because of the lack of insurance -- there's no way to be sure that timelier care could have saved her. (The mother did not give her last name to the news channel, making it difficult for TPMmuckraker to contact her ourselves. And Young's parents' phone number is not publicly listed.)

Still, if Young's lack of insurance did contribute to her not seeking treatment sooner, it would be hard to find a starker or more compelling example of the need to fix our broken health insurance system. And the fact that she was a constituent of the man who's leading House Republicans' in their effort to block reform only underlines the point.

Oxford (and John Boehner's district) are in southwestern Ohio, not northwestern, in Butler Co., just north of Cincinnati. I come from that county, and Mom still lives there. She had her hip replaced at McCullough-Hyde last year.

According to this story, her roommate's name is Brent Mowery, so you can call him and his mom.

I hope the Obama Administration is taking note of the potential for more cases like this one, where someone without insurance is afraid to go to the hospital. In addition to how sad this story is, it's also a serious threat to public health.

I think some Remember Kimberly Young signs at Boehner appearances might shut him up for awhile. I wonder if this incident will cause his conservative Christian constituents any doubts? (I shouldn't even ask, right?)

That could be my daughter -- except after she finished her BA in the States she went on for an MA at a small school in Canada and is covered by their (gasp) socialized medicine as long as she pays her school fees. She also just found a part time job there. I wish she was closer to home, but she may end up staying there for economic reasons.

That could have been me except I got a job in South Korea, where everyone has a government plan. Even the most conservative of people here can't understand why America doesn't have the same system.

And a plurality of Republicans here don't understand it either if you look at the results of the NYT poll that showed the vast majority of people in this country across the political spectrum in favor of a strong public option and sweeping heatlhcare reform.

I keep saying the same thing again and again. Don't give up the fight those of you who see the wisdom of health for all your citizens. Even though I am not an American, I am first and and foremost a member of the human race, and frankly this story is very sad. Just the stress of having to pay for care, must in and of itself be hazardous to one's health. Like I say every time I post....JUST PAST THE BILL. Regretably, it seems, you will need to fight even harder for it to include a PUBLIC OPTION, but at least its a step in the right direction. Personally,I think it is a reflection on those who oppose health care for all, of their dishonesty and lack of interest in the well being of their fellow citizens. Be proud of your efforts, but don't settle for defeat.

And we welcome her with open arms. The more brain power we can entice from foreign countries the better. If "socialized health care" is the ticket, it is a small cost to pay!

There is nothing communist about health care as the republican party would tell you (and I'm sure all their representatives have health care!?). It should be a given for a civilized country. Lack of such says a lot about the USA...

i would be very surprised if it were just one. passing a presbyterian church today, the sign outside announced sunday's sermon, "who would Jesus torture." i suspect one could just as rightly say, "who would Jesus deny health care to?" well, he definitely did not like those Pharisees!

Boehner and Cantor are both typical Republicans. They just could not care less who lives and who dies as long as the money keeps rolling in. It would be useful to move this country out of the Dark Ages to have lists made of ALL the unnecessary deaths in Republican districts. I would like to beat these assholes into the ground themselves with all the innocent lives they ruin with their greed and lies.

This same story gets told in thousands of different iterations annually and while it may not be 100% clear that lack of insurance led directly to her death, it can certainly be said that lack of insurance delayed her seeking proper care and she certainly would have improved her odds of survival had she allowed proper medical intervention earlier. This should not happen in a civilized nation. We have got to put a stop to it now.

Hoehner's healthy living formula. Tanning beds and lots of bourbon. As for true reform of health care for the rest of us, not so much.
