House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) appeared yesterday at a health care reform discussion hosted by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. As the newspaper reported, constituents "listened without booing" and "left in an orderly fashion -- without shouting, fighting or the escort of law enforcement." What a refreshing change of pace.
As Think Progress pointed out, there was only one glitch: Cantor told a woman whose uninsured relative needs a tumor operation that she ought to look into "an existing government program" or seek charity to pay for the operation. Way to stick to conservative principles.
The constituent said she has a close relative in her early forties "who did have a wonderful, high-paying job, owns her own home, and is a a real contributing member of society." Then she lost her job and found out she has stomach tumors and needs an operation.
"She has no insurance," the constituent said.
"This person is a very close member of my family," she said. "She's ill. And she has no way to have this operation. So I'm asking you, what would you do if this were your close relative. Your niece, your aunt, your sister or whatever."
Cantor suggested looking into "an existing government program."
"There are programs, there are charitable organizations, there are hospitals here who do provide charity care," he continued.
"No one in this country, given who we are, should ever be sitting without an option to go be addressed."
And apparently this Republican wants us to rely on government and the charity of others to ensure that.

If she had a high-paying job and has some assets, she may not qualify for a government program (as people like Cantor made sure of this).

Even if her being black wasn't the reason for Cantor's answer (I saw a video of Sen Coburn blowing off a white woman in OK the same way) the fact that this woman is black is part of a deeper issue.
The questioner appears middle class, but still for blacks, what is a high paying job? Maybe 100K, where as for white middle class people a 'high paying job' would be $500K
And, blacks have struggled so hard to get into the middle class - I'm not denegrating the experience of white working class people moving up to middle class. But for blacks it's been a hard multigenerational study. And now this woman has to liquidate assets she spent years accumulating so she can get surgery??
Given the Republicans penchant for using dog whistle terms like 'quota', 'welfare,' 'entitlement' you'd think they'd want to help a black family that has clearly worked hard to stay in the middle class.
And, given Cantor's wealth he has no experience trying to get government help. This woman probably has cancer, and she's supposed to be chasing around finding a program that will pay for operation? She'd be dead by then.
The best thing she could do is fly to France, get the free health care & apply for political asylum.

At one point Cantor says (I'm paraphrasing) "there are programs for the indigent". He doesn't complete the thought, but it goes like this, "you just need to become one of them". Cantor is so out of touch with the realities of planet earth that he doesn't even realize that he's telling her that she needs to lose her house and every other asset she has so that she can become eligible for medicaid or charity or a hospital's indigent care program, and that's an acceptable way for "the greatest country on earth" to provide healthcare for all. It's shameful.

He's not out of touch. He doesn't give a damn. He's got his, that's the only thing that matters. I wish the questioner had asked him why, if it's so easy, he doesn't give up his own solid-gold insurance that she's helping pay for. According to him, that's money wasted. Of course keeping the likes of him alive is also money wasted.

Good point, but needs extrapolation for the skeptics.
The closer you get to street-level reality, where most of ACORN's ops did their good works, the further you get from those penthouses in the clouds where the big campaign contributors dwell.
And those penthousers, not the public, pull the puppet strings, particularly in Congress.
While they all defend corporate welfare system, they are not so generous to the street-level citizen.
Anyone else agree, to lift the nation from it's recessionary depths, shouldn't we start at the bottom, not the top?

I know exactly what you are saying. I got drawn out of Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's District at the last redistricting, and into Tammy Baldwin's District. I love having Tammy for my Congressional Representative, but I nevertheless miss the opportunity to write-in the name of "N.E. What, you mean like a public option?
As if we needed anymore proof this fucking dickhead's opposition was totally disingenuous. We need to just ram the public option through with 51 votes. If we don't, we just might lose the House in 2010.

There's no profit in insuring sick people - especially sick people who have little money. But this is not an economic issue as much as it is a moral issue. We are all one. We are all brothers and sisters. We ARE our brothers keeper. And what we do unto the least of them - we do unto Him.
Cantor is an immoral asshole living in a state which prides itself as predominantly Christian - having a strong Christian heritage.
That seems quite meaningless and hypocritical - don't you agree?

Please! Cantor is simply going to stick to his script no matter what. His side has no solutions other than "if you can't afford care, you die."
Remember when Grassley told the one person who was complaining about how great Grassley's healthcare plan was compared to the one he had? I believe it was something like "If you want the plan I have, get a government job!" Or "Get elected to Congress". Something like that.
I couldn't believe that one. Everyone just sat there in the town hall, stunned. No wonder Grassley's approval rating is down 20 points over the last few months.

LOL.
I actually think Cantor's faux pas is a good sign: The GOP is intellectually bankrupt, not just morally. HE can't even fake a good conservative answer to the question. Normally, in a circus like media environment they don't have to face these serious questions or give serious answers. But when he had to, he couldn't. He went momentarily, vaguely, Democrat for an instant. Basically, Democratic ideas own the debate. The GOP can only contrive distractions, gimmicks and sideshows.

He along with his republican buddies is one of the ones responsible for the situation and he has the chutzpah to just ignore the question. And yes I can tell you the qualifications for Medicaid. Under $2K in cash assets outside your house and retirement funds that you cannot get into right away. If this woman had a decent paying job, chances she isn't going to meet the guidelines. As far as COBRA thanks to scumball Cantor and his buddies, cos. don't have to have COBRA so this woman is truly SOL. Also too, she's uninsurable. What a country we live in!

This is just one more example of why we need Medicare for all. Why should anyone of us have to research what charities are out there just so we can keep living? This system is so broken, convoluted and unsustainable. We should all be protesting for Medicare for all. Why do we even need insurance companies anyway? They don't really serve any purpose other than to make money off sick people, even if we do get health insurance reform, the insurance corporations are still profiting off our illness. It makes no sense as to why they exist in the first place.

This jerk--and all of his little "You Lie!" buddies--has been infected by the deadly REPUBLIVIRUS. There is no cure for this disease because infection is entirely voluntary, it is immediately lucrative, and highly addictive.
The most prominent symptoms are a blazing hypocrisy, chronic Christianity-deficiency, and a glaring lack of compassion for others, especially those with the, er, (whisper) darker-type skin tones.
The up side of the diagnosis is that the resultant pain and agony are only experienced by Others: the poor, the elderly, children, the handicapped and unemployed, and other such rabble! Unfortunately the condition rapidly becomes chronic, is highly resistant to available antidotes, and the prognosis is invariably fatal.
Good luck finding "an existing government program" to help you with that!

Come on people - where's the faith. Cantor is one of the lead Presidential candidates from the Republican Party. Clearly, compassionate conservatism has risen to new levels with people like Eric Cantor leading the way.
Cantor also supports the Iraq and Afghanistan wars of choice - he's decided that it's better to engage in wars and drop bombs on the innocent children and women of Iraq & Afghanistan with drones than it is to take care of fellow Americans.
I'm surprised that Rep. Cantor was that compassionate in his response...... I expected: Aren't you a minority? You really aren't an American, so your relative should go back to their native land and get help over there. US health care is only for those with the gold or those who are elected officials. Max Baucus has made that pretty clear in his National Insurance Company Revenue and Profit Preservation Plan (NICRPP - Nice Ripoff).
Sadly - our democratic elected officials are unable to WIN the needed reforms (single payer health care system) Vs the sorry likes of Eric Cantor on the other side. Yesterday, B. Clinton summed up in 3 minutes why we need a robust public option.....something that would resonate with EVERY American. Obama has made speech after speech and he still hasn't found the key messages. He's way to general and I don't think anyone knows what the Obama plan is.....there is no Obama plan.
Talking heads like Cantor and the rest would be irrelevant if the DEMs got their act together - and I'm losing my patience with them as well. Goldman Max....leading the charge from Montana. Population 930,000 or about .3% of the US Population. On top of that, Max is the beneficiary of more money from the health care companies (insurance, big pharma, etc..) than any other elected official in the house & the senate.
We need to start pressing hard on the DEMs - they are fumbling the future and the time for action is NOW!
