Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) said today that, because of angry town hallers and the like, President Obama should show "humility" when he speaks to Congress Wednesday night.

"What you're seeing is folks on my side anxious to see what the president has to say tomorrow night," Chambliss said. "I think he's gonna have to express some humility based on what we've seen around the country this August and that's not his inclination."

The implication here is that Chambliss's side -- the one that opposes much of the Democrats' reform plan, especially a public option -- is winning, and that the president had better be humble.

Video after the jump.

Gee, a white Southerner is telling the black President that he better be "humble" and know his place.

Actually the South is winning right now and never forget the war is far from over. The actual shooting stopped a long time ago but the trench warfare politics is just about as hot as ever. I would be happy if someday the fascist religious South would go their own way back to the Dark Ages and the progressive rest of us could get on with decent and productive lives. We waste so damned much time arguing and compromising with these fucking morons.

There are rcist morons in every state. As to percentage, I doubt one can determine that: it may only be that Southern racists are proud and boastful of it so it only appears there are more in the South.

Then again, there is that little Civil War thing, resulting from secessions based upon the effort to preserve slavery.

The South is winning? Is that why we have a black president despite their best efforts? Is that why the party that's most popular there is no longer a national party, but has withered to a regional party that lost the White House and Congress?

Reminds me of a comedian I saw once relate a story about performing in the South. In the middle of his stand up routine, some guy in the back jumped up and shouted "Whooooo-weee! The South will do it again!"

The comic asked, "Do what? Fight a war to enslave people or start a war and lose?"

Yup. Let's have a President bowing and scraping to a panic brought on by the Fox news company spreading false information and acting like a political party. That's just the type of leadership we want.

Sen. Chambliss is the one who needs to show some humility. It might also help if he went back home and started telling his constituents the truth.

If anyone should be showing humility, it should be the Republicans. They and their industry friends pulled out all the scare tactics that they could during August. But, guess what? According to polls (see Gallup's most recent), opinions on healthcare have changed little (technically, the "change" is nonexistent; it's statistically insignificant).

Certainly, Democrats would love to see overwhelming support for their bills. But, when it comes to such a controversial issue, overwhelming support is not likely, especially when people don't fully understand everything in the bills [Democrats fell short in explaining.]. Nevertheless, the public is still strongly supportive of reform.

Politically, Democrats should forcefully press full steam ahead, and force the Republicans to take the politically perilous position of voting against a bill that would do things like keep a cancer patient from losing her care or an unemployed man from having to go without healthcare.

Be careful about wishing Biden to speak. We've already seen what he can do with his gaffes. The last thing Obama needs now is Mr. Loose Lips going off message and giving Obama's opponents even more to work with.

I do agree though that Obama needs to be more forceful. I'm thinking of something like the scene towards the end of the movie "The American President," where Michael Douglas goes in front of the press, calls out his opponents and reminds everyone that he is the President. Screw "humility" - we've seen the last couple of months where that's gotten him. Obama needs to lay out who he is and what he stands for here with utmost clarity and authority.

Obama should show up with a black bowler imitating Step 'n Fetchit. Then ask Chambliss if it is humble enough for him. Actually I would rather the President tell Chambliss to go f@%k himself. It worked for Cheney in the Senate. One thing having a black President brings out is the overt racism of the southern and western Republican politicans. They don't even try to hide it anymore. in the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, Chambliss received five student deferments while attending the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee College of Law and was also given a medical deferment (1-Y) for bad knees due to a football injury.[2]

The President should show Saxby Chambliss precisely the same humility that Chambliss showed to his opponent, former Sen. Max Cleland, during his campaign for Senate, when he ran an ad that accused Cleland of supporting terrorist Osama bin Laden. The reader may recall, that in the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, Chambliss received five student deferments while attending the University of Georgia and the University of Tennessee College of Law and was also given a medical deferment (1-Y) for bad knees due to a football injury. Cleland served in Vietnam and lost two legs and an arm. I thought the Vietnam war was a big mistake, but I certainly don't think that someone who didn't fight in it has any room to call a seriously wounded veteran of such a war, someone who went on to serve his state as a US Senator, a softie. Chambliss represents the very worst of the Old South. Unfortunately, that aligns him with the centre of the GOP. I cannot think of any serving Senator less deserving of respect.

One word. STEAMROLLER.

Dollars to donuts I bet the Obama team has been chomping at the bit all summer to put the full court press into action, but have held back because no one pays attention in August and you never launch a media campaign until after labor day. The other shoe is about to drop on these do nothing obstructionist Republicans who've played right into Obama's hand. They will look like as dumb as the parents and teachers who kept children away from Obama's speech today.

Hey Chambliss, you have 24 hours to smarten up or face Blowback.

I guess Masta CHambliss wants that young negro fella to show show some deference to old those old, southern white men who are feeling nighty threatened these days.

You betcha he wants some deference; perhaps he should have his shoes shined by that young uppity fella - would that make him happy?

Does this old phool expect that POTUS should be kissing his fat ass? I would give anything to smack this turkey upside the head and see if there is anything there.

I sent a comment earlier that has landed somewhere else not this thread that Chabliss saying that in public really blew my mind. But while I was waiting for my unfinished comment to show up I realized when I lived in the south I knew people that would say even more racist things in front of people they didn't know. People like that and Chambliss really don't see anything wrong with what they say. So, while it is not mind blowing, it is just plain sickening.

I'm surprised (well, maybe not) by the reflexive charges of racism leveled at Chambliss because of this quote. Does this mean every utterance that sounds or resembles racism is so? Hell, no, but its sooooo easy to say that it is given the races of the speaker and who he's speaking of. If Obama was white (oops, he is half white, in fact) no one would be saying this. What a bore.

So boring trying to get racism eradicated from people like you. You know as well as the rest of us that black in America was always visually black -- in the South even 1/10 by blood would do.

To this day, if you send out a resume with a name that sounds black you get a much lower response rate. So, no, however boring it may be to you there is a lot of work to do on racism.

Chambliss knew and therefore intended precisely how this would reek of racism. If not, it is high time that he offers an abject apology.

Predictably, you insist on calling me a racist and are ready to convict based upon the concept that not everything that may come out of a southern senator's mouth is based on race. So, if he'd said that to Hillary after August's events, he'd be accused of being sexist? Is it not possible that he was referring to only politics?

Hell, he may be a racist but my comments are based solely on what he said for which there is no irrefutable evidence of racism.

So if Chambliss had called Obama 'boy' I should assume that Chambliss only did this because Obama is a young man and I have no absolute proof of Chambliss's intent?

In the context prolonged history of white men in the South demanding humility from blacks there are certain resonances which cannot be ignored as you seek to do.

If Chambliss had said that there were a lot of people who did not agree with a public option and that Obama should take this into account I would not have had a problem.

Chambliss was indulging in a racist dogwhistle and your inability to see that is what is troubling me.

The Republican Party has as a significant portion of its base those who are still aggrieved at the loss of affirmative action for white people.

Today's Republicans are largely those who still want the government to give them a leg up and a handout.

They look nostalgically on the old days when the government ensured that they had racial preferences in schools, housing, voting, jobs, and other aspects of society.

The idea that government no longer gives them the racial preferences they had become dependent on for generations is a large source of their rage against government.

Many Republicans are deeply imbued with a sense of entitlement, but now that the racial preferences they depended on for so long have been tamed by the power of the US Constitution, they nurture a childish rage about their sense of abandonment.

What we saw in August was a vocal minority, ginned up to shut down debate with shouted misrepresentations and oft repeated lies. And Chambliss actually think he's in a position to dictate how the President comports himself? Geesh. The Senator could take a lesson from the dignity and grace with which President Obama conducts himself...oh and perhaps Chambliss could try some of that "humility" himself.

Cowgirl, I'm going to give you credit & assume you're not a troll. I don't know how old you are, and I'm truly glad that in your area everyone mingles & racism is dead.

However, not all of the world is there yet. Among those of my parent's age, "Ni**er" is still used freely, in public. Sometimes "our ni**er president". BTW, this is not just a southern thing.

Everyone above a certain age knows what it means when you say a black man, or Latina (Sonia Sotomayor, anyone?), needs to show "humility". It means that they need to know their place, which is below the White Master Race. And back in the good ol' day, if they didn't show "humility", there was some tar, a rope & a tree.

I know it, most people here know it, and Saxby's voters in GA sure as heck know it, at least those over 40.

I hear you but good luck trying to get that point across here. Most folks here are apparently ready to convict with out hearing all the evidence. In other words, if it sounds like a racist statement, it must be. Hell, I don't know if Chambliss is or isn't-if he is, he can go to hell, but I'll be damned if I call him that based on just this.

And, predictably, I'm called a racist for not falling in lockstep with the groupthink here.

He should stand up there and get in their face if that's where he's going to do it from. LBJ knew how to get Congress to fall in line when he needed. Sure, he made an ass of himself a lot, too. we could do without that aspect, but the tough-as-nails SOB thing would go a long way right now.

I really think the Pres. is being woefully ill-advised right now. They're backing off the public option because his numbers are falling, when the public option is overwhelmingly popular. He should be more aggressive, not less. People are upset because he's waffling. his staffers need to go back to school for a little while, I think.
