At about the same time several hecklers were demanding an MSNBC reporter leave the floor of the Values Voter Summit, a lone wolf approached Fox News's reporter, James Rosen.

He is significantly more weird.

It's just a matter of time before Republicans realize that. Once the beast is unleashed, it's hard to put it back in the cage.

On the current trajectory of the Republican party, 2012 is gonna be a helluva' campaign for them. It's gonna boil down to who can out-crazy the craziest. Incredibly, they don't even realize what they're doing to themselves, what kind of battle they're setting up for themselves.

You don't embrace the fringe and shun civility without consequence.

Pretty wimpy. Guy should've stood there screaming "YOU LIE!" until the Fox boy shut up.

Still, value added.

Why didn't he just say he was from Fox News? That probably would have stopped stopped all this. I would be shocked if the guy interrupting would keep doing so if he knew Rosen was from Fox.

Didn't Fox report on this event last year? I wonder if they had someone reporting on the floor like this year.

What is interesting to me is that the MSNBC reporter was actually speaking very quietly almost whispering during his report, the Fox News "reporter" was very loud. I would bet a few bucks that the people who were upset and disturbed and harassed MSNBC heard the Fox News "reporter"

Nothing like the gutter culture trash of society eating their own.

Could it be that what goes on at these events is so embarrassingly far fetched that they simply don't want any actual coverage at all? They would much rather come out after the event and make stuff up.

Can't really say I blame the value voters people for wanting to listen to the speakers. I'd hate to go to some event to hear someone speak and have some wind-bag narrating the event over my shoulder.

"The guy basically overawes the Fox reporter by insisting on hovering over him and mumbling until he relents. By the end of the encounter the Fox guy looks like one of those freaked out, hollow souled guys from Heart of Darkness."

Makes me laugh every time I read it Josh.

So, essentially, Josh, what you're saying is that you agree that this level of discourse provides us with an acceptable model going forward.

Embarrassing.

Am I the only one out here who finds that TPM has lost its way? That the level of discourse I'd expect out of intelligent people should rise above this, regardless of the subject?

I give.

In defense of Josh - who is quite capable of defending himself - a reasonable viewing of the video shows exactly what he describes. And if you disagree then you are free to provide your own personal perception of events here in the comments. But to take a scolding tone with Josh - who is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of this newsblog - regarding his editorializing of an event is rather useless. If anybody is qualified to editorialize it would be the editor.

Stop embarrassing yourself with your little Miss Manners impression. The Heart of Darkness reference is both relevant and precise.

"TPM has lost its way?"

Which "way" was that in the first place? Considering the eclectic variety of the commentors here, it is hard to imagine anyone locking in on a "way."

Not that it's news, but the pick-up in the studio about the Values Voters event contains actual truth: "....we want to get the word out..." Normally, reporters talking about a highly partisan event don't talk quite that way, but we are dealing with Fox, of course.

Wow, gotta say I'm with the "crazies" on this one, why would anyone want to pay to attend a conference only to have it drowned out by the cable news pimps? I usually enjoy Josh Marshall's little quips but his characterization of the Heckler as soulless and weird was not only cruel but wildly off the mark. Earth to editor, the reporters are the ones acting without consideration in this situation. I think it's telling that you don't see that Josh, and maybe it's just an occupational hazard of journalism to believe that events are only relevant when properly parsed by journalists. It's especially aggravating when the reporters are simply reading of bullet points from the press release while interrupting the actual event, but then make the threat to not "Broadcast Your Event" as if by averting your collective gaze you can these people all go away.
As a long time activist on the left the one thing I've gathered from the coverage of the recent protests on the right is that the Media is less often biased to the left or right as it is biased by class. You all might need some ice for egos, they're swelling.

When you have more TeaGoobers, Inbredheads, and Trailer Popes attending these events, who want to share the voices in their heads, you're going to have problems. Fox not getting it's message out is no big deal. Most of the time it's just lies anyway. Things are really starting to get interesting from a freakshow perspective.

You think the reporter may have actually felt himself to be in danger, and took the first out he
had?
Looking at it again - that does tie together the speed with which the reporter caves, and the haunted look that Josh mentioned, it really does.
I wonder what else that guy was mumbling, that wasn't audible on the clip, but the reporter could hear.

I disagree. This does not look like it has anything to do with politics. It's about courtesy, consideration of others, and arrogant rudeness of the media, whether its MSNBC or FAUX. As a print journalist who has attended many conferences where TV reporters do their stands ups during the meeting, it's VERY ANNOYING. They're on camera talking while everyone around this is trying to listen to the speakers. TV reporters should do their stand-ups where they don't interrupt the meeting. It's that simple.

bamboo is absolutely correct. This mild mannered man was telling the news reporter he was being disruptive. Was there screaming and yelling involved? No, as a matter of fact I could barely HEAR what the "heckler" was saying. There was no freakshow, just plain rudeness on the part of Fox News.

It turned out to be that the organizers had given the reporters a permission to broadcast live during the speeches inside the room and did not bother to inform the crowd. After these unfortunate incidents the attendees were told to be nice to the reporters from then on. It's the organizer's fault.

It seems to me that this guy was simply complaining about the reporter because he was being too loud or disrupting things.
