FOX News entertainer/"journalist" Glenn Beck sat for an interview with Katie Couric and offered a surprising ranking of his preferences from last year's presidential race.
"I can't believe I'm saying this," Beck said when asked about Hillary Clinton, "but I think I would have much preferred her as President, and may have voted for her against John McCain."
That's because John McCain is a "weird progressive" like Theodore Roosevelt, Becks says.
Then, laughing almost frighteningly, Beck said:
"I think John McCain would have been worse for the country than Barack Obama. How's that?"
That is...surprising?

Surprising that Beck is nuts and will say anything? Not at all.

Beck has no clue what it means to have an idiological axis. He is a fire-bomber who's only mission is to stir it up for the sake of ratings. I give Limbaugh credit for at least understanding politics, even if he does exploit it. Beck doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.

I think it's just an indication of how utterly pathetic McCain was as a candidate. Not even wingnuts can support him. As far as they're concerned, Republicans lost the last election before their primary ended.

And the irony is he sold his soul to try and win over the wingnut base of the Republican party. If he had run as the candidate he was in 2000, I think the election would have been much more competitive.

What Glenn Beck means is attacking Hillary would have been even better for his career than attacking Obama. Chances are no group would have organized a boycott of his advertisers for calling Hillary sexist.
Spending 4 years trying to convince his viewers McCain is a "weird progressive" would have been a hard slog and would have decreased his ratings.

This statement actually makes perfect sense within Beck's worldview.
Beck is trying to radicalize people. The idea he's pushing is that there WAS no choice, that voters have no recourse, and that the entire government is illegitimate. He wants the democratic process to break down because that's when the people who shout the loudest become even more powerful, and he's got a big megaphone.

Here's the state that this country is in politically.
Probably the biggest and loudest voice for the extreme right wing over the last year, who has been equating constantly liberalism (and Obama, and his policies more specifically) with the certain downfall and destruction of this country, thinks he can go on TV and claim that someone who he agrees with ideologically on EVERY issue over Obama, is someone who would have done worse than Obama as President. And not only does he think he can go on TV and say this, but he thinks he can get away with it and not immediately get called to the carpet for it. And, not only does he think he can get away with it, he WILL get away with it.

Maybe this has to do with the Fox News memo that came out after it was clear that the Fox News produces was telling the teabaggers to make some noise for the camera.

Beck is a Great Republican - one of the leaders of the current Republican Party. And William F. Buckley Jr. is rolling over in his grave. 2 r 3 years ago Buckley thought Bush & Cheney were destroying his party.....

Beck hates McCain because he wasn't rightwing enough. (Far too rightleaning for me but ...) Extremists often hate moderates. This is fairly predictable human nature. Look at how some far lefties have loathed Obama for being too moderate and not in lockstep with their ideology. Or witness the villification of The Goracle, who was labeled as a virtual identicle twin to George Bush. To an outside observer, this seems crazy. But not to fanatics and ideologues.
Moderates are in some ways worse then opponents, and regarded as "traitors". I'd expect some anti-immigrant wingnuts to hate McCain more than they hate Democrats. Democrats oppose them, but McCain and other "RINOs" "stabbed them in the back".
It makes perfect sense.

I think we should take everything this man says at face value....
Good Lord, TPM.
The man's a loon, and who cares what insane rant he's off on today? Tomorrow he could just as easily break down crying in an on-air apology to McCain and call Hillary the Devil.

"The man's a loon, and who cares what insane rant he's off on today?"
Unfortunately, he's a loon who can command a one-on-one interview with Katie Couric, no doubt for use on the CBS Evening News. And that means we have to care, just as we have to care about Tuberculosis, hurricanes and other menaces to human health and safety.

"command and interview with Couric" should not seem like a big accomplishment for Beck. MSM are in it for the money. When he lands an interview with Amy Goodman - let me know.

Did Katie Couric ask Glenn Beck why he has lied about his mother's death -- claimed it was a suicide in 1977, when police records show it was an accidental drowning in 1979?
And why did his first wife first not learn about it until years after they married, when she heard him discussing it live on the radio?
(These questions are based on Alexander Zaitchik's report yesterday on Salon.com.)

Gracious. Everyone's offering such interesting analyses of Beck's words.
My thought? "Good God. I agree with him: McCain would have been MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than Obama!"
Everything else he said? The rantings of a cynical huckster, out to boost his ratings.

Beck tends to moderate himself when in more mainstream company. It allows people who don't pay much attention to think he's reasonable. I think the progressive movement underestimates Beck, who is promoting an extremely right and very dangerous ideology. We shouldn't merely ridicule him. We should be focused on countering his message so that others are not fooled.

"Gosh, if Beck thinks McCain would be worse than Obama, he must not be all that bad. Maybe I'll tune in and see what else we agree about. Maybe I've been wrong about Glenn Beck this whole time. He sounds more reasonable than I've been led to believe."
I'm pretty sure that's what this is about.
