Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) -- who's making quite a name for himself by accusing the GOP of having a health care plan premised on the idea that sick Americans should "die quickly" -- just made a pretty fiery appearance on CNN.
He called Republicans "foot-dragging, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals who think they can dictate policy to America by being stubborn." He said that he's "saying what everyone else has been thinking but no one else has been saying." And he once again refused to apologize, saying it's Republicans who should say sorry.
Apologize? I'm not the one who should be apologizing. They should apologize to America.
Grayson insisted that his "die quickly" remarks on the House floor were different than Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-SC) "You lie!" outburst during President Obama's health care speech to a joint session of Congress. "I didn't insult the President in front of 40 million people," Grayson said.
What I said is true. What Joe Wilson said, on the other hand, is false.
And how has Grayson been received since his "die quickly" comments?
"Everyone has been overwhelmingly positive," he said.

or at least its attack dog. i dunno, i'm kind of on the fence when it comes to this stuff, but at least it's fighting fire with fire. grayson seems to be of a piece with the WH calling out Fox News today, so whatever it means behind the obama-scenes, the gears are at least turning a bit. we'll see if it results in a public option, which i think is the most important aspect of this whole debate.
well, that and removing the HMO anti-trust exemption.

I loved his original point of 'don't get sick and die quickly' and I loved that he didn't apologize for it. But he should stick to that and drive it home.
Going on CNN and then calling Republicans names is a terrrible idea, because it delegitimizes him and makes it easy for people to paint him as childish and unserious. Agree?

Really? It's true that they're neanderthals? If you're going to speak the truth, make sure it's the truth!
It would be just as effective to say something like, "Republicans literally want to take us back to the Dark Ages".
That's powerful, attention getting, and has arguments to back it up. Calling them neanderthals doesn't cut it.

I agree. Rep. Grayson is better than his CNN appearance. He could be a party player, but he came across as a television pundit rather than a Congressman. I love his passion, but he was green as grass and I think the established punditry will eat him up and make him into a distraction.

It is a given that Rep. Grayson "calls out" the Republicans for what they stand for, but applying the same standard, will he be so willing to do the same against Senatorial and House DINO's? (Democrats In Name Only)...
Much more derogatory comments should be aptly stated about the "conservative/blue dog Democrats" in the Senate (especially in the Finance Committee), who go against the most basic and core principles of the Democratic Party, than what Rep. Grayson said against the Republican Party as a whole...
65% of the voting population favors the "public option" yet these same elected DEMOCRATS follow the pathethic and illogical premises of their counter-parts...
Where in the House and/or in the Senate are Congressmen who would be willing to "call-out" their own DINO's for what they truly stand for?
Should the "public option" be lost, the fault will lay squarely at the feet of the Democratic Party... (The Republican Party, in all actuality, is irrelevant in this debate)...
Democrats control the House, with a huge majority; the Senate, likewise with a large majority; and the Office of the President (who is "conveniently silent" on PUSHING the 'public option' throughout this ongoing process)... They could pass whatever they so desired, if they only acted like a cohesive Party for the true benefit of the population...

This is all very humorously distracting from the fact that DEMOCRATS are in the process of fucking Health Insurance in the ass and can't even commit to a real "public option" let alone real reform aka Single Payer. I can't say Grayson's anti-Republican vigilantism doesn't bring a smile to my face though.

I couldn't agree with you more! Maybe the House Democrats can hold their own and force REAL CHANGE, regardless of the Senate, but that's a long shot... Democrats could have had it all - Sad, so sad that they lack both a necessary discipline, as well as a President who could actually LEAD...

As soon as I heard about Rep. Alan Grayson's comments, I knew exactly what was going to happen: First, inevitably, Republican bloggers and office holders would become incensed and insulted and would demand an apology. Then -- and this is where it gets interesting -- some moderate liberal bloggers would come to Grayson's defense, albeit with caveats. Call them the "albeit chorus," comprised of prominent liberal bloggers who consider themselves reasonable and civilized above all else, and either write for semi-mainstream publications or hope to do so one day. Any supposed support for the substance of what Grayson said would come only after statements that would express their distaste of Grayson's uncouthness. Just like Josh Marshal did, rushing to tell us that Grayson's comments were "really over the top" and he would not actually defend them.
I actually think Grayson's comments are eminently defensible -- the current health care insurance system allows people who can't afford health insurance to die, and anyone who's against reforming it is at least guilty of negligent manslaughter. But for once, under this particular political climate where obviously insane people have taken over the Republican party, I would have liked to see prominent liberals like Marshal defend Grayson on the substance of what he said without any "albeits." Perhaps then the MSM would concentrate on how many people actually do die from lack of health care due to lack of funds, and how the Republicans don't care if they die or not. Instead, what will happen next is also inevitable: spineless democrats will join the Republicans asking Grayson to apologize, the MSM pundits will join in and Grayson may end up joining all the other Democrats who had to prostrate themselves because nobody had their back.
I just sent Grayson a donation and will continue to do so.

Alan Grayson is up on Act Blue. I sent the man $10.
I know that's not much but if all the readers of TPM send even a few dollars, that will be the most audible message that we can send the Dim party.
Maybe then the Dims will get the medical help they need to strengthen their spines.
I get all sorts of begging emails from the Dim Party. They won't get my money till they've earned it. I'll give money to the opponents of Joe who isn't Joe Wilson and Bachmann as a message to the Repugs to grow up. And to people like Alan Grayson, who has earned it. But not the DNC, until they start acting like the Democratic party, instead of like Repocons.

A hard-nosed principled and righteously fearless Democrat has just stepped up to the plate and hit one out of the park.
Perhaps the fact he's been in Washington long enough to know how Republicans operate, but not long enough to become an acquiescent accomplice in the dishonesty is why he could do it.
Perhaps he just felt he had to do something because no one else was willing to do anything.
