MSNBC is reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will hold a vote early next week on whether to censure Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), unless he apologizes on the House floor for heckling the President.
Wilson already apologized to the White House for his outburst Wednesday night. He screamed, "You lie!" during President Obama's health care address to a joint session of Congress, just after Obama said a public option wouldn't cover illegal immigrants.
Obama accepted his apology, but some lawmakers have been calling on him to apologize on the House floor. In appearances since, Wilson has seemed less than repentant, calling it a "double standard" that he had to say sorry at all.

This will only feed the sense of victimhood that the GOP toddlers play up so well on their myriad media outlets. As Ted Kennedy was the personification of liberaldom in his day, Nancy Pelosi is the first name mentioned when they feel aggrieved. Sean Hannity and the other Fox idiots will pick at this new scab every day.

Actions have consequences.
They're going to play the whiny victim card no matter what. The only question is whether they're going to be held accountable when they act inappropriately. Just "rising above it" and ignoring inappropriate conduct only emboldens and enables them. (Just like ignoring illegal conduct of the previous administration only emboldens future lawbreakers--but that's another post altogether.)

Your suggestion about making Mr. Wilson stand in the corner does not do it for me. As a lifelong moderate Republican, I am hoping that Republicans stand up for what is right and put a stop to this obvious racism. It is disgusting to me that my party would ever condone such ungodly behavior as Representative Wilson's was. Try as Republicans seem to be doing to cover it up, Wilson's outburst looks like a classic example of pure racism and if our party does not put a stop to it, it will haunt us for years to come. We already have the well deserved reputation for racism so it is time to make our opposition to racism clear. If Mr. Wilson is so ill-mannered that he disrespects the President on any other basis, let him try to explain that directly to the people. The plain truth is that racism is unGodly and it needs to be called out every time someone indulges in it. So if Mr. Wilson does not understand that if it looks like racism, smells like racism, yep, it is most probably ok to realize it is racism. Frankly, this issue is a make or break issue for me and I intend to hold out party accountable. Frankly for too long, I have excused this sort of unGodly behavior on the basis of the silliest excuses. No more!

I think we agree. I never suggested he be merely made to stand in the corner; I think he should be censured for his conduct, which plainly violates the rules of the House. Were you responding to a different person's post, and it accidentally got attached to mine?

So what? They are in full fever pitch already, are we supposed to cower to the will of the rabid on the right just because they make big fusses? Wilson clearly broke the written rules of decorum in addition to being incredibly offensive to our President, his cabinet and the majority of the House and Senate and millions of Americans. Censure the him!

Who cares what the Republicans say. And I am a moderate Republican. However, I still insist on the ordinary decorum expected when Republicans deal with the President of the United States. I am thoroughly ashamed and outraged at Wilson's behavior and I insist that he be censured. We cannot have adults acting like this guy does and then expect our children to grow up with any respect for the Presidency or Congress. Sad for me to say, but as a Republican I am totally embarrassed that there is even any discussion about what Wilson must do in order to erase his racist behavior. And if our party fails to insist on his apology for his racist behavior, they can kiss minority votes goodbye for years and years to come. And that is exactly how it should be. What truly bugs me is how our party tries to nice up what this racist has said and change the subject to avoid this perp's attempt to cover up his most disrespectful behavior.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. This will give Wilson a prime-time platform in which to stand on the House floor and say, "I'm very sorry for interrupting the President's speech; it was very disrespectful and I was wrong to do it.... but as a matter of fact, I'm right: the President's bill will give free medical care to illegal immigrants, create death panels to kill your grandmother, double your taxes, turn the government into a socialist regime etc., etc."
Then, for good measure, we'll have a couple of media cycles in which the talking heads debate whether Wilson's apology was really an apology.

Nah, if Wilson just prattles on in any supposed apology but never does apologize, the Democrats can just censure him and a censure has real consequences for a Representative.

Well, if he doesn't apologize, but instead grandstands on the House floor, gavel him down, then proceed to censure him, then move on.
Honestly, most people wouldn't argue the merits of letting bratty toddlers have screaming meltdowns in the Wal-Mart checkout line; why is it okay for ostensible "adults" to act inappropriately, and we're all supposed to let them get away with it?

The problem is that he can both apologize AND grandstand. He can apologize for interrupting the SOTU, but insist that he's right about what he said.
And you can be sure that an army of GOP strategists will craft Wilson's statement to be right down the line: enough of an apology to argue that he should escape censure (and to cry victim if he is censured) but enough grandstanding to make the "apology" a vehicle for further dissemination of wingnut propoganda.

As someone else noted, he's already grandstanding on the issue. He's unabashedly fundraising off it, for crying out loud. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away for some ephemeral political gain (as though that's the only consideration here). Ignoring such behavior condones it and encourages others to act similarly--or even more egregiously--in the future.
Censure him and move on.

Censure by the House is no small matter. They can even suspend his voting rights if he refuses to apologize. That will put pressure on this guy to get his act together or else. There are even worse consequences so if he just insists on not apologizing, they could even suspend his voting rights till he does apologize. He knew exactly what he was doing so let him try to wiggle out of taking responsibility for his disgusting behavior. He can wither apologize, just decorate his seat for the next few months or resign. It is his choice.

Would there have to be a vote? I'd love to see how Republicans would vote on such a matter.
If he wasn't desperately trying to raise money off of this action I might say "Let it go and focus on healthcare and other matters", but fund raising off his outburst is too much.

Pelosi ought to show more courage & censure Wilson. My,goosh As Speaker isn't she charged with upholding & enforcing the rules of decorum in the house body by it's members.
If Pelosi can't uphold the integrity of the House chamber she as speaker is no better than Wilson, both show scant respect for the institution. How much more Shamful can it get..

A censure is the equivalent to a sternly worded letter and will be treated like a badge of honor by the teabaggers, Fox and radio cranks. When Baucus doubles down on keeping illegal immigrants out of the bill that they are already excluded from, he's signaling that Joe Wilson was right. If the Dems insist on caving to every goober and gomer who raises his voice, how can we count on them to pass a bill that isn't a pale imitation of what we need?

Patience, young Jedi. :) Have to make the fish squirm on the hook for awhile. We don't want this to be over and done with too soon. Got to make an example out of scum like this. The longer this goes on, the worse Wilson and his party start to look, and the better for healthcare reform because it keeps the GOP on the defensive. Obama stopped them cold on the "death panels" on Wednesday night, and they've not yet been able to come up with their latest faux outrage du jour.
Let Pelosi take time with this, so that it filters all through the media. Besides, the entire chamber has to vote on it, and nothing is ever lightning quick when 435 people have to be consulted and rules need to be followed.

Isn't this something that the Republicans should be enforcing? No one should hold their breath waiting for such a formal apology to happen but they should at least give them a chance to clean their own house (pun not intended).
I think Pelosi is coming off like a repressed control freak. Where was all her gumption when the people were demanding impeachments during the last administration? A trustworthy investigation of 911? The investigation of war crimes? Lies and manipulation in the lead up to Iran -- the Neocon exploitation of 911? The revelations of Sibel Edmonds regarding bribery and corruption of members of Congress by foreign agents?
This only shows her pettiness whenever a no-name, nitwit son-of-the-Confederacy and Dixie flag waving racist is involved. When has she ever stood up to a big dog?

Agreed: I think she should have done more on those other issues too.
However, the Speaker of the House must enforce House rules and decorum. It's not "petty" for someone to do her job. It's also inappropriate for her not to act, or to let the Republicans (in this case) enforce their own private standards of decorum.
It's pretty cut-and-dried. There are standing rules of decorum in the House. Wilson broke them. The House leadership must enforce the rules. Whether it's the Congress or a local group operating under Robert's Rules, you can't have a deliberative body subverted by hooliganism.

I've seen Wilson on C-SPAN a number of times, he's an arrogant, nasty right winger who looks down on his political opponents.
Maybe the Dems are playing him, baiting him so he shows just how nasty and arrogant he can be. He's already playing down his "apology" and the wingnuts are coming to his defense, but he and his party are getting a lot of bad press.

But don't you think that it would be nice if the country could actually get together and solve our differences through a little better communication and a little less vehemence?

That link leads nowhere. But if it's referring to the occasional boos and hisses Bu$H received, that's a pitiful comparison. Not to mention the fact that it is SPECIFICALLY against House rules to call someone a "liar". This is cut and dried. Some form of action MUST be taken to restore the House Rules of Order.
