President Obama, continuing his efforts to rally his base around health care reform, spoke at the University of Maryland today to a loud and sometimes rowdy crowd of students.
"Health care is more than details on a policy, it's about what country you want to be," he said. "We don't fear the future, we shape the future."
As Obama told stories about patients getting shafted by insurance companies -- a common tactic in his speeches -- the crowd booed so loudly Obama had to pause and ask what was going on.
"We're doing OK, everyone's doing OK," he said, and the boos turned to cheers.
The audience booed again when Obama mentioned the proposed bill released yesterday by Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus. The President replied, "Each bill has its strengths."
He appealed to the students' sense of service, calling reform a "responsibility."
"Improving our health care system only works if everyone does their part, and I think Americans are ready to take on that responsibility," he said.
Obama wrapped up his speech with the "Fired up!" anecdote, one he used often on the campaign trail and has dusted off for recent health care rallies.
"We need the voices of young people to transform this nation," he said. "I need your voice."

Way to lead Mr. President! Slowly Americans are getting "fired up" behind health care reform (I hope).

What speaks to young Americans more than a music video... When the President spoke before Congress, he offered some examples of why we need to move forward and specifically talked about a man who died because he lost his insurance coverage in the middle of chemotherapy.
Some alert people put together a mashup of those words with a song by Colin Gawel called "Chemotherapy". I think this video makes a powerful statement about why we need healthcare reform.

Pro-health care reform folks have to start making some noise and demanding THEY are heard, not just the industry and wingnuts.

As a member of the UMD campus, I need to clarify the story. The first round of boos while Obama was discussing personal stories with healthcare was due to a heckler which the crowd was booing. The second round of boos sounds a bit exaggerated. People were more excited that something was getting accomplished.

I was watching on tv and heard the heckler. It seemed like the disturbance went on for a few minutes after that.
I also heard the boos when the Bacus craptacular plan was mentioned. Hopefully, the president took that memory with him when he left.
