President Obama spoke this morning on the administration's change to a planned European missile defense system, saying the new strategy "will provide stronger, smarter and swifter defenses of American's forces and American allies."

Obama said he made the change after an assessment of the missile defense strategy and unanimous recommendations from Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He said the new plan is based around changing intelligence about the threat from Iran's ballistic missile program and developing defense technology.

The new architecture "best responds to the threats we face and utilizes technology that is both proven and cost-effective," Obama said in brief remarks in the White House.

Gates also spoke from the Pentagon, along with Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

The system will "enhance our ability to respond to the most immediate threats to the Continent as well as future threats," Gates said. He said the plan would be implemented in phases. The first will involve missile defense systems placed on ships; the second, starting around 2015, will move to land-based versions in the Czech Republic and Poland.

All these moves have bigger potential than we sometimes realize. If Obama can steer a path past Iraq and Afghanistan (jury's still out) he may very well consolidate the liberal and realist/ Scowcroft wings of the foreign policy establishment for the Democratic Party. That would leave the isolationists and the neocons duking it out for control of the right, with the likely "We are all Georgians" idiocy defining the GOP.

I was shocked at people mad at the Gates appt. around here at the time. The guy was the best appt. pres. Bush made, and Gates only seems to care about making our military the best it can, regardless of whose in office. I would hope he stays a big voice in our forces for a long time.

This report is somewhat vague on what the exact differences are, spending- and technology-wise, but it's good to know we'll still be spending billions on missile defense that will likely be useless. Long live Reagan!

Gates is terrific, and Obama is a gutsy man.

Why not just put the fucking thing in Israel? It's not like it's a secret who were setting this up for.

Better yet have them pay for it and send us the money we sent them this year back for violating the law by building on Palestinian land.

We can use that money to protect our citizens from the murder for profit health care system.

Josh is right. Bolton and the neocons are crying their eyes out that the prospect of a new Cold War is now more distant than ever! Btw: Does anyone with a brain even read Drudge anymore?

Wait, but isn't missle defense extremely expensive???

I thought these good GOP folks were suddenly all now deficit hawks???

How much will we save in the deficit by canceling this Big Government Missile Defense Plan?

Where is the very non-partisan CBO when we need them??
