A candidate for state office in South Carolina drew 500 people to a fundraiser Saturday that included the giveaway of a $700 AK-47 semiautomatic rifle.

Dean Allen charged $25 a pop for his "machine-gun social," which included the giveaway, 20 rounds to shoot in a machine gun of your choice and a barbecue, held at an indoor shooting range in Greenville. Allen, a Republican, is running for adjutant general, a position that includes administering the Army and Air National Guard, among other things.

"All of our rights ... are predicated on supporting the Second Amendment. That's what makes America a free country," he said today on MSNBC. (Video after the jump.)

"I like to tell people I'm not the country club conservative," Allen told the Greenville News. "I'm the machine gun one."

A web ad for the fundraiser says the event includes 10 minutes of training, "So you don't shoot a right-wing radical by mistake."

"This event is all about celebrating our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms," Allen told The Palmetto Scoop. "We are celebrating these rights in the hopes the liberals in this country never get the chance to take our Second Amendment rights away from us."

(In South Carolina, raffles are illegal, so a "free" entry for the giveaway was included with the fundraiser ticket.)

Why is this stuff always coming out of South Carolina? Is it something in the water? If so, I know it's not due to modern industrial pollution, because the behavior dates back to the Ante Bellum days.

Native son James Louis Petigru had the state pagged:

South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum. -- James Louis Petigru, 1860

He is also said to have replied once, when asked the way to the SC Lunatic Asylum: "My dear Sir, take any road, you can't go amiss. The whole state is one vast insane asylum."

(Maybe it is no accident that South Carolina was the second state -- after Virginia -- to provide for the care of people with mental illnesses.)

If these morons are so damn patriotic, why are they giving away an automatic rifle that is unquestionably made outside the US? Or is their warped sense of priorities telling them their right to shoot the living crap out of anyone who disagrees with them trumps any notion of patriotism? Can we fence off South Carolina please? They give my home state of Louisiana a good name.

The Republican solution to the recession, a free assault weapon. The terror groups in Somalia also give out AK-47's to the faithful, at least there guns help put food on the table.

OK...

If it is as he says: ""All of our rights ... are predicated on supporting the Second Amendment. That's what makes America a free country,"

Then shouldn't gun ownership be in the Preamble of the Constitution?

"We hold these GUNS to be self eveident..." ??

South Carolina has always been a racist pit.

They were the first or second state to form slave patrols, which brutally enforced segregation on blacks (and whites) and later evolved into what we now know as the modern police force over time. A great book on the subject is called "Our Enemies in Blue".

A foreign made gun used as bait to pull people to a GOP fundraiser...The comments write themselves.

In some parts of this country they give away assault rifles with the purchase of a car or for opening a big enough bank account. These things are advertised in newspapers and on the local radio. Shocking first time you hear it, then not so much.

We live in a land of gun nuts. They mistakenly and hilariously and tragically think their peashooters are some kind of match for U.S. bunker busters, drones, and so forth.

"This is the AK-47 assault rifle, the preferred weapon of your enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired at you. So remember it." - Clint Eastwood's character in Heartbreak Ridge.

So why do they align themselves with the commies and hate our democracy?

Because they aren't in charge. And nothing they do is wrong anyway. So if they were in charge, and we were Socialist, it would be the best thing ever. Like, better than sliced bread, even. But since it's the Evil Other Party in charge, they have to do everything they can to stop it.

flyers from the very anti-semitic "save your heritage" (.org) are handed out at some GOP events, and they are quick to tell you that they are not working for the candidate -- i moved to this state and am appalled at the overt racism.
