Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele told students at a historically black college in Arkansas yesterday that Martin Luther King Jr. would be disappointed with President Obama.

"Dr. King would be disappointed in the political leadership of this country for failing to address the least of us," he said.

As Think Progress points out, a student then approached the microphone and asked, "In all seriousness, I'm curious what you think that Dr. King would think about your party's current attempts to block universal health care?"

"It's a great myth that we're doing all this blocking. I wish we had that kind of control with the numbers, but we don't," Steele responded. "As I've said to the president many times, 'If that's the bill you want, vote it up or down.'"

Right on!!!! Amazing that so many in my Party are so negative about Obama's leadership. Steele has even abandoned the poorest of the poor, many who are blacks. It is a disgrace that people in our country often have medical care problem far greater than in third world countries. As a Church worker in the Chicago area some time ago, I saw the saddest illustrations of the lack of medical care. Kids with raging infections, deaths from simple pneumonia and disasters from the simplest home deliveries of newborn. All these related to poverty and lack of insurance. What a sad commentary on the US. It seems that lately, particularly during the last administration, our social services have lagged and our own people live in the most abject problems. Imagine parents having to see their children's health destroyed for lack of medical care. So I say to my own party, get out of your comfort zone of great insurance and see how the poor are getting along. The Scripture tells us that we will be judged by the way we take care of the least of these. Sad to say, we have flunked and the health care costs in the future will reflect the increase from that failure.

"Failing to address the least of us"

I'm having a very hard time grasping this statement. Is Steele arguing that conservatives are both the "Silent Majority" and a minority at the same time?

He should also brush up on his vocabulary. He's "addressed" the GOP many times. Just because you plug your ears and scream over his words doesn't mean that he's not talking to you.

Obama has a 95% approval in the black community. This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard that Steele has said and he has said many dumb things.

MLK Jr would have been EXTREMELY proud of Obama. Of course he wouldn't have approved of everything that Obama does (who does?) but overall he would have been EXTREMELY proud.

Seconded. Steele ought to be ashamed for his statement. It really goes beyond politics.

I'm going to act like a stupid Republican and declare out loud that I can read the mind of a dead man, and say that MLK would have definitely been very disappointed with Michael Steele.

OMFG. I think it's very possible that MLK Jr. rolled over in his grave with Steele's statement.

Here's a black man giving his opinion that one of the greatest black men in history would be disappointed in our black president, who he claims isn't providing leadership to the "least of us?" OMFG.

There's a new source of alternative energy - we keep Steele talking, and attach generators to noted civil rights leaders. If Steele gets tired, Buchanan can pinch-hit with his "white people built this country" speech... :)

Mr. Steele is quite an embarrassment. Who exactly does he think his audience is? Oh yeah,TeaGoobers, Inbredheads, Trailer Popes, and Beckerheads. What was I thinking? Mr. Steele is very ignorant.

Really? is right...

This man is incredibly ignorant. I get the impression that he is not aware of the words coming out of his mouth.

I am guessing he thought this was a good way to create ire toward the president among the african american community and as it was completely lame, I doubt it has had the desired effect.

Steele is a 'perfect' representative for the republican party of today based on the ignorant tea partiers, birthers, limbaughtomized, etc.

No, they're not blocking anything. They're fighting for things to stay the same...

"vote it up or down"

shortly after this, a student asked if Steele could say "Mr. Mxyzptlk", which he did and then subsequently vanished.

Yeah except Steele is just a token chairman, nothing he says or does has any effect on any elected republican anywhere.

For once I agree with Crazy Steele. Obama has wavered on the public option when he should support single-payer; he has escalated the war in Afghanistan and not moved to end the one in Iraq; he has politely and "humbly" denied that race is a factor for the Joe Wilson crowd; he has sat on the sidelines and said nothing while corporations overthrew the democratically elected government of Honduras; he is about to re-up key domestic spying parts of the Patriot Act; he has repeatedly backtracked from his promise of government transparency. I don't think MLK would be cheering.

I suspect that at some point in the not too distant future, Steele will revise and extend his remarks.

Will someone please get this Sambo off the stage? And yes, I meant this statement as a racial slur. He's a disgrace to his race. He's a disgrace to ANY race.

You know, this is really unfair to Michael Steele, and a complete misrepresentation of his comments (out of context, too).

Michael Steele doesn't understand what a filibuster actually is, so when he said "up or down vote," he meant 60 votes up or 41 votes down. This is obvious to anyone who's not a Communist.
