As we've been reporting, many on the right are targeting Kevin Jennings, the director of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, over his homosexuality. Today, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and 52 other House Republicans have taken their criticism of Jennings a step farther, writing a letter to the White House asking that President Obama fire Jennings. King has made that request before -- but never with the formal backing of so many other GOPers.

The letter claims that Jennings has "played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America's schools."

"The totality of Mr. Jennings' career has been to advocate for public affirmation of homosexuality," the letter continues.

Text of the full letter after the jump.

Dear Mr. President,

We respectfully request that you remove Kevin Jennings, the Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, from your Administration. It is clear that Mr. Jennings lacks the appropriate qualifications and ethical standards to serve in this capacity.

As the founder of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Mr. Jennings has played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America's schools-an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children. As evidence of this, Mr. Jennings wrote the foreword for a book titled Queering Elementary Education: Advancing the Dialogue About Sexualities and Schooling. Throughout his career, Mr. Jennings has made it his mission to establish special protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students to the exclusion of all other students. The totality of Mr. Jennings' career has been to advocate for public affirmation of homosexuality. There is more to safe and drug free schools than can be accomplished from the narrow view of Mr. Jennings who has, for more than 20 years, almost exclusively focused on promoting the homosexual agenda.

Equally troubling is Mr. Jennings' self-described history of ignoring the sexual abuse of a child. In his book, One Teacher in Ten, Mr. Jennings recounts a 15-year old student confiding in him that he had a sexual relationship with a much older man. Mr. Jennings' only response was to ask if the underage boy used a condom. As a mandatory reporter, Mr. Jennings was required by law to report child abuse, including sex crimes. Mr. Jennings cannot serve as the "safe schools" czar when his record demonstrates a willingness to overlook the sexual abuse of a child.

As the "safe schools" czar, Mr. Jennings is also charged with ensuring our schools and students are drug free. It is clear that Mr. Jennings is unfit to serve in this capacity, as well. His own history of unrepentant drug and alcohol abuse indicates that he is of the opinion that getting drunk and high as a young person is acceptable. In his memoir, Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son, Mr. Jennings describes his use of illegal drugs, without expressing regret or acknowledging the devastating effects illegal drug use can have on a person's life.

Everyone that deals with the education of the most vulnerable must be a positive role model. Our children are not blessed with the wisdom to discern and reject. Children presume the adults who educate them are approved by the larger society and their parents. Kevin Jennings cannot gain the approval of parents who want their children safe and their schools drug free. You should replace him with someone who has a record of educating children in a safe and moral environment.

Given these very serious issues with Mr. Jennings' record, we urge you to remove him immediately.

I guess he should have stayed in the closet like all the gay members of congress with an Rafter their names. What is worse, someone openly supporting recognition of gay rights or someone voting against that recognition and then pinching his male chief of staff on the arse? What a joke the Republican Party is. The guy is homosexual, is it the Republican Party's stance that no homosexuals can be responsible members of the government? Sounds like it.

Once again the GOP an it's ilk rise or better yet lower themselves into fear, ignorance, and hate disguised as ideology.

They can forget it! I read weeks ago that the Whitehouse is not going to allow them to railroad Jennings the way they did Van Jones. Further, many have suggested that Jenning sue Sean Hannity and Fox News for slander. I'd love to see that but, doubt it will happen. He could easily win too because, everything they've been saying about him is a lie. What I'd like is for Rahm to respond to their letter and tell them that we'll be too busy watching the DOJ's investigation of Senator Ensign, who appears to have committed some real crimes!

"The totality of Mr. Jennings' career has been to advocate for public affirmation of homosexuality"

Probably the funniest part of this is that they think that's a persuasive argument.

And of course then they go on to lie some more about the 16-year-old boy who confided in Jennings, well aware that the age of consent was 16 and that there was no crime to report.

I am reminded again of my favorite Voltaire quote: "O Lord make my enemies ridiculous." Like Voltaire, for us this prayer seems to be answered in excess.

Really! The GOP is a complete joke and so is this idiot King. Have you noticed all the lunatics in power in their party? It's amazing that you could get so many ignorant and illinformed people elected to office. Of course it helps when their electorate are toothless banjo players and people who can barely read or complete sentences.

I just love what's happend to them lately. Look at Lindsey Graham being heckled at a recent townhall. The wingnuts have grown fond of their new found fame and aren't going to let a little thing like a meeting with their own parties elected officials without showing off their ignorance! It's really hilarious!

I have an instant list of 52 GOP representatives that should be "fired" immediately to protect our citizenry from gross stupidity and dangerous, possibly murderous, homophobia. This is a criminal act by these clowns, and should be exposed as such.

What's worse, the letter implies the old, sick stereotype of homosexuals being pedophiles that are trying to "recruit" kids to become gay. Nowadays, conservatives know that only extremists use the term "recruit" to describe gays, so the new verbiage is "imposing a homosexual agenda." How sad. Kevin Jennings has spent his entire career to ensure that all children - regardless of their sexual orientation or sexual identity - are able to learn in an environment where they don't feel threatened and aren't ostracized to the point where they are vulnerable to engaging in risky behavior. Sounds like the perfect qualification for the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. Alas, while mainstream America has steadily evolved to view gays and lesbians as equal Republicans refuse to even grant them even the most basic dignity.

That's funny -- King and co. didn't seem to have a problem with gay politicians when George W. Bush was in office and Ken Mehlman was running the White House Office of Political Affairs and the RNC.

Funny, 5th Iowa US Congressional District Representative Steven King must not have read the news that the Iowa Supreme Court overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage back in April.

The louder these ignorant, homophobic, babbling idiots scream the easier it will be to identify them later.

Once the FEMA camps are ready, we can make Michelle Bachman's fantasies come true and round up the idiots and put 'em all in the camps.

Think of the jobs that'll create!

Well, it is Halloween season. It's really fascinating watching these guys continually recycling pop-up scary boogiemen in their increasingly frantic effort to create a durable all-purpose enemy, and one woulda thought that "Islamofascists" was good enough for the long haul. It's never been the same since the collapse of the communist empire.

Perhaps they've convinced themselves that they can continually whittle away at the Obama administration one at a time with these machinations, so all that's necessary is to just ignore them. If indeed Jennings is thrown under the bus, they'll only escalate the campaign.

It's not just that the guy hasn't done anything worth getting fired over.

It's also that the Rs are acting like what you'd expect from a group who hasn't heard the word "No" in eight years. They really need to hear it. A lot. Loud. And with a few "Go fuck yourselves" (and its more baroque variations) thrown in for good measure.

(For those of you who missed it, it begins:

Steven Arnold "Steve" King (born May 28, 1949) is an American politician who is the first openly gay member of the Republican Party representing the 5th District of Iowa in the United States House of Representatives since 2003. The district is located in the western part of the state and includes Sioux City and Council Bluffs.

It shouldn't need to be said, but here goes: the "S" in GLSEN stands for STRAIGHT. GLSEN is an advocate for children, period, and is deeply involved in combating school bullying.

To say that GLSEN promotes a homosexual agenda--that it promotes ANY agenda other than "kids have the right to go through their school day without fear"--is deeply disingenuous, to the point of dishonesty.

"Throughout his career, Mr. Jennings has made it his mission to establish special protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students to the exclusion of all other students."

Indeed. There are no protections for straight people. Straight students cower in the closet for fear of social ostracism from their gay overlords who think heterosexuality is an abomination and affront to God.

Do they seriously believe this nonsense?
