In a speech this morning on the Senate floor, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) offered the White House "a friendly suggestion."
"Don't create an enemies list."
Alexander, according to his prepared remarks, described President Nixon's famous list of political opponents and dissenters, which included journalists.
"Now the only reason I mention this is because I have an uneasy feeling, only ten months into this new administration, that we're beginning to see symptoms of this same kind of animus developing in the Obama administration," he said.
Video after the jump.
Alexander mentioned the animosity between the White House and Fox News as evidence of a pending enemies list. He also cited the White House's issues with the Chamber of Commerce (which opposes health care reform and climate change), President Obama promising to "call out" people who lie about health care and the Democrats' attempt to revoke the insurance industry's antitrust exemption -- which, Alexander says, is punishment for the insurers' "insubordination."
In related news, Fox News personality Sean Hannity claimed last night that the White House is already developing an enemies list.

Yeah, I'm having lunch today in the Cool Springs Galleria (the mall south of Nashville, gateway to Klansville) and there's Lamar Alexander, talking to Neil Cavuto on Fox News.
Fox News is a fully-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party. And what's more, Alexander's top legislative aide for healthcare is formerly communications deputy for the NRSC. It's all one big PR cluster****.

Let's see -- the Nixon enemies list was secret, attempted to use the IRS, FBI, CIA and other government agencies to attack the people on the list, and even went so far as to break into the office of the psychiatrist of one person (Daniel Ellsburg) on the list.
President Obama and the Democrats, on the other hand, are publicly discussing legislation to take away the insurance companies' anti-trust exemption in order to increase the possibility of competition in the insurance market (after the industry went all out to oppose any possibility of meaningful competition in the health reform bill).
They are also standing up and publicly challenging those who spread outrageous lies about the contents of the health reform bill, not having the FBI investigate them.
And they have the temerity to publicly say what everyone knows -- that Fox News is nothing more than a shill for right wing talking points and instigator of hate-inspired attacks on the President (and won't cover the Obama administration in a "fair and balanced" way no matter what Gibbs et al do).
Maybe it isn't surprising that an ex-Nixon staffer like Alexander can't see the difference between the two -- seems like another case of a Republican projecting their own nefarious intentions onto their opponents.

Thank you. It just drives me crazy when idiots like Alexander say these things and don't get called on them. "Secret list of private citizens who have said mean things about you and who you are misusing the power of government agencies to destroy" is NOT the same thing as "Public admonition of powerful corporate entities that are attempting to subvert your agenda through lies, misinformation and deception."
As usual, Republicans project onto Democrats, and accuse Democrats of doing things that they have done themselves, only in a much more sinister way. And of course, the mainstream media will never mention any of this.

Do you have to pass some sort of stupid test to be a Senator from a Southern state and if you're not stupid enough they won't let you run?
I'm sure Sessions, Vitter, Landrieu, Lincoln, Alexander, DeMint, Bunning, Chambliss and most of the others would pass with flying colors.

The average Southern rep, in that regard, is actually fairly representative of the voters that keep electing them - racist, sexist, ignorant, and scared of change. The reps are just millionaires on top of that.

Jus' some good ole "friendly advice" from our "friends" in the GOP!
These Republicans are just "concerned" about Obama, right?
And bashing FauxNews and the insurance companies -- couldn't possibly be effective, or they wouldn't be giving us this "helpful" advice that it is obviously very counterproductive. I mean if it were counterproductive, they'd be the first to warn us, so that Obama doesn't hurt himself.
Thanks, GOP friends!!!

Hey wait, isn't that exactly what someone on Fox (Hannity?) said? Do these people just copy talking points and send them out to all their spokesmen? Fox, Senate GOP, Dana and other talking heads, etc? Are they even capable of dressing up the talking points a little to own them? Sheesh

There's only so much you can press your agenda without intruding on its opposite, Lamar.
I expect the insurance companies to fight for every last dollar and every last protection afforded them by quirks in the law. I expect the oil companies to resist a tax on their product based on its carbon content, however that tax manifests. I expect corporations of all types to resist a bill that allows its employees to declare their status as a bargaining unit within a reasonable period, and forces employers to bargain in good faith lest a contract be imposed in binding arbitration.
You make your arguments, and we'll make ours, and we'll see how the votes come out. If the American public is that unhappy with the results, there's always the next election.

It is a commentary on Lamar Alexander and his Republican cronies that the worst insult they can think of to smear a Democrat is to accuse the Democrat of acting like a Republican, a Republican President, at that.
Well, nice try Lamar, but no one is taking the bait. Nixon, like Bush, was a criminal. Obama is simply picking his way through the mess left by the previous administrations - he's making progress and it hasnt even been a year yet.
When those other issues, you say you care about so much - education, global climate change, etc. - come up for decision time, let's see where you land : in the right-left false dichotomy of screaming heads and sanctimonious blovators or for American citizens.

There is a big difference between the enemies list of Nixon and Obama. Nixon secretly hired G. Gordon Liddy, William McCord and other domestic terrorists to perform burglaries and other illegal activities against American citizens. Obama just does not want to cooperate with right wing chicken-hawk commentators, masquerading as reporters.

These guys are so tiresome. Anything short of being a smiling punching bag gives them "an uneasy feeling". I hope the uneasy feelings are just beginning for the GOP, Faux News, the insurance industry, and the Chamber of Commerce. I wish the Banking industry had more to feel uneasy about too.

have you ever noticed the good ol' gop's constant criticisms of barack are exactly what they have done, what they would do, what those who support them do?
death panels - their health insurance industry pals already do that by denying care; government between you and your doctor - again their health insurance pals already do that with rationing; enemies list - big fav of karl rove.
go ahead, try yourself, think of any stupid remark from any republican and you can find the example of that being exactly what they have done.
is that transference or a guilty conscience; but then i'm not convinced they have any conscience or humanity; or for that matter any patriotism defined as the "most benefit to the most people."
