Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) appeared on MSNBC this morning and declared -- not for the first time -- that a public health insurance option tied to Medicare-levels of reimbursement would be bad for states like his. Not just bad -- but "a disaster," Conrad said.

That's because North Dakota has the country's second-lowest Medicare reimbursement level, Conrad said.

"My state would be very adversely affected by public option tied to Medicare-levels of reimbursement," he said. "That's great for New York, California, Flordia. It's very bad for low-reimbursement states like mine."

The answer, Conrad said, (again not for the first time), is "a cooperative plan" and not a "government-run plan."

He has a point, I guess. An x-ray in ND costs the same as an x-ray in MD or CA, right? But couldn't the po bill tied to Medicare rates specify that?

He actually does have a point. That's why I wouldn't mind a COMPROMISE being one based on Negotiations or Medicare plus 10 or 15.

That being said the only reason he is so obsessed with a co-op is because he is the asshole(along with his industry friends) who thought of hit. FUCK YOU Kent Conrad, we are getting a PO whether you like it or not.

blue cross/blue shield is the only game in town in north dakota, the biggest contributor to conrad's campaign coffer and they have petitioning the state to become a co-op; that said, conrad does make a good point, and possibly if that can be corrected to his and others satisfaction, the public option might get a nod from them. worth thinking about if reid is open to any form of a public option, which i am doubting.

I do take note that he says the PO tied to medicare rates. What about one without the tie? He's not dismissing the PO, here, at least.
