CNN's Dana Bash and producer Ted Barrett waited outside embattled Sen. John Ensign's (R-NV) office in Washington today and asked him about a New York Times report that he flouted a lobbying ban by directing his staff to have contact with Doug Hampton -- his former mistress's husband -- in regard to Hampton's lobbying work. Ensign also tried to help get Hampton a job after the affair had been discovered. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) confirmed on Sunday that the Senate Ethics Committee, which she chairs, has begun "a preliminary investigation" of Ensign.

Confronted by the CNN team today, Ensign denied that he'd violated ethics rules.

"You can just see our statements on that," he said. "I think it's pretty clear. I said in the past I recommended him for jobs, just like I recommended a lot of people. But we absolutely did nothing except for comply exactly with what the ethics laws and the ethics rules of the Senate state. We were very careful."

Bash asked Ensign if he'd considered resigning.

"I am focused on doing my work," he said. "I'm gonna continue to focus on doing my work."

Ensign also said that he and his office "will cooperate with any official inquiries."

When asked about a meeting with a Nevada airline which the Times reported Ensign had helped Hampton get a lobbying contract with, Ensign said "all of these things will come out at their due time. But there's no question, we complied with all of the ethics rules."

As the group waited at an intersection that the CNN team had followed Ensign to, Ensign insisted that rules allow that "you can talk to anybody."

"But not about clients, and not about matters that they're lobbying for," Barrett shot back.

"I never met with that captain about any of that stuff," Ensign said.

Barrett: "But your staff did."

It's not entirely clear who that "captain" is, but we have a feeling Ensign was referring to airline CEO Maurice Gallagher -- a supporter and major contributor of the Senator's.

We'll have video up shortly.

Late Update: Here's the video.

Late Late Update: It also occurs to us that the "captain" might be Hampton. Not that we're aware of him ever achieving that rank or title -- but in the context of the conversation, it could be that Ensign was referring to Hampton. Though why he'd call him the "captain," I don't know.

Please don't resign - Ensign is our Mark Foley and Ted Haggard rolled into one. Every time he speaks or appears on TV with "ethics investigation" and "mistress" next to his name it helps us in 2010.

Oh, well that settles it then.

This defense falls right in line with "I've never seen that gun before in my life" and "I was just stopping to ask the young lady for directions".

Guys like Sanford and Ensign who feel they are 'chosen ones' in leadership are not going to leave until they get kicked out.

This is whats so frustrating to those of us in Nevada. He doesnt think he has any responsibility to be held accountable to the voters of Nevada, rather he puts more stock in the opinions of his C street buddies and fellow hardliners. As much as Sen. Ensign would like to believe that his "God" put him in power, the last time a checked "God" was not a registered voter here in Nevada. Good thing ACORN didnt register the big guy, that would have really gotten the red goat!

Is there a pool running on how many times Faux News shows this story with a (D) next to Ensign's name? It certainly wouldn't be the first time...

Matt, are they still playing that pathetic trick? It's like the unpopular kid in class who keeps sitting on the whoopie cushion.

Flashback:

"It is neither uncommon nor inappropriate for Members of Congress to stay in touch with former staffers, especially when they are friends as Neil and the Congressman were, and if Neil crossed an ethical line, he did so without Congressman Ney's knowledge. After reviewing today's plea agreement against Neil Volz which is thin at best, the Congressman is more confident than ever that he will be vindicated in this matter. Even with the coerced cooperation of the primary alleged conspirators, the Department of Justice has now has appeared in federal court four times and has been unable to even allege that Congressman Ney was bribed. On all four separate occasions, federal prosecutors have declined to make that allegation. That is because there was no bribery, there was no quid pro quo and there was no wrongdoing committed by Congressman Ney.

"Even though, as I'm sure it was with Neil, the financial pressure that comes with defending yourself against the full resources of the federal government is tremendous, the Congressman will not under any circumstances plead guilty to a crime that he did not commit. Congressman Ney has said from day one that he has done absolutely nothing illegal, improper or unethical and while the real facts of these matters await to reveal themselves, the Congressman has every intention of continuing his work representing the people of Ohio's 18th District and running a vigorous campaign for re-election."
