Gen. Jack Keane (Ret.) said on ABC's This Week this morning that if he were Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal -- the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan who's asked for 40,000 additional troops for the war there -- and President Obama did not agree to his request, he'd resign.
If you're a general on the ground, and you believe the recommendation you've made is the winning recommendation in terms of strategy, that'll accomplish the goals that you've been assigned, and then you're told that you cannot execute that and ask the troops to go out and do something else that you don't believe will accomplish those goals -- that gets very difficult in terms of a moral dilemma, asking the troops to do something that you believe is going to fail.
George Stephanopoulos asked Keane if he'd resign under those circumstances.
"Probably, yes," Keane said. "Under those circumstances, yes."

Completely ignoring the fact, naturally, that McChyrstal said the most important factor is having a solid long-term strategy first ... But, hey, that would limit the WOW factor of conflict on TV ...

When did leaking you report to the press replace following the chain of command? I am tired of the Generals that seem to think that they are running their own political campaign.

That's good. People in the military who don't like their orders should resign. That's a great idea.

Perfect, General McChrystal replaced another General who was fired. He too can be fired. Our troops cannt run another country. Remember Somalia? What good does occupation do if governing structure take shape from within?

Really, because no general stood up when it was time to go to Iraq and yet some general should have stood up! I find that a very suspect statement.

Generals should resign when they disagree with the President. More should have done so under Bush. So long, General.

Retired Generals that have spent thier entire careers in the military know two things only; preparing for War and War. They don't think in any other terms, especially the retired ones that are living vicariously through the current conflicts. Obama is the C&C and McCrystal's job is to execute Obama's orders. Those receiving orders don't get to make the final call. A General that resigns because a War is not escalated is a far different creature than one that resigns because it is.

That's a very smart comment. And we want smart generals, not single-minded ones.
Keane obviously didn't read McChrystal's statement, since it wasn't a one-sentence request for more troops.

McChrystal's public release and discussions about his requirements for additional troops, without specifically going through the chain-of-command, amounts to insubordination.
He should be fired forthwith and replaced with a more loyal soldier who will not fancy himself another General MacArthur, who didn't believe he reported to the CinC, but only to God. Truman rightfully fired him, and the President should fire McC immediately.

Divorce the statement from the politics surrounding it.
Keane is entirely correct to say that a general should step down, if he is handed a mission and inadequate or incompatible resources to accomplish that mission. There was at least one general who stood up to the civilian leadership at Defense - Eric Shinseki, the current Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Shinseki merely observed that a Kosovo-style mission in an area four times as large would require about four times the troops, barring some efficiencies in deployment that no one suggested. They fired him for being right.
McChrystal is probably right to suggest that he would need more resources to break a resurgent Taliban, operating out of border territories. Obama's role is to determine what the mission is, and most importantly, whether it's worth it. We should welcome some foot-dragging here by the uniformed military, because maybe they are trying to push policy away from endless and costly garrison actions that do little to address any threat.

Where was General Keane when Bush was railroading everyone into the BIG FUCKING LIE that Iraq turned out to be??? Where was General Keane when Rumsfeld was sending in a dramatically smaller force to occupy Iraq than many others said was needed to do the job???

The one thing the people of our nation should have learned by now is that the generals behind the scenes are war hawks and therefore lack the wisdom and discretion as to what wars are actual wars worth fighting. It should be stated that it is quite obvious that Afghanistan and Iraq were never wars that should have been started in the first place. If we actually had wise generals behind the scenes they would have stood up to Bush in the first place. But the fact of the matter is that these generals (Keane, Rumsfeld, and the rest) and their political counterparts (Republican and Democrat)are making huge sums of money off the military industrial corporate complex while our young men and women are dying on the fields. These generals should step down and Obama should end the war. It's wrong, it's immoral and it's way too expensive.

If this guy is so righteous he should hold up his own record & prove that he always did the right thing, therefore he should be listened to. If he had anything to brag about, he would be patting himself on the back instead of giving the whatifs. He risks nothing with this comment except showing his political leanings & losing a little face.

So, if you were someone important, you'd still act as infantile as you do now? I'm not sure that'll affect anyones life in any profound way, but it was a good laugh.

Strike that if this Gen. Keane had a problem with civilian control, he wouldn't have the chance to resign before rightfully being sent to Leavenworth.
