A radio station in Athens, Ga., is drumming up publicity by calling itself "Obama Government-Controlled Radio" and playing Hawaiian pop, songs like "Superfly" and "Disco Inferno" and clips from President Obama's campaign speeches.

Between songs listeners hear messages such as, "Why let highly paid consultants pick the music when you can let the government do it for you?"

Bulldog WPUP-FM, a classic rock station, is trying to hook listeners with the gimmick before changing formats Thursday night at 6 p.m.

"Yes, it is a stunt," the station's program director, Kevin Steele, told TPM.

And it's working.

"Our online streaming listeners have doubled in the last 24 hours," he said.

After playing REM's "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" last night, the station started its Obama push and will begin its new format -- which is still a secret -- tonight.

The station is owned by Cox Radio.

Come on. We really don't need to hear about every squirt of right wing sauce on every remote region of the country. This is an commercial provocation, which you have fallen for.

Let me guess. The new format will either be wingnut talk radio or country music.

Obviously, Obama is a tyrant. After all, all those right-wing AM syndicated radio shows have been fined off the air already, right? I can't think of any radio stations that still broadcast Hannity or Rush or Bleck, can you? And Armed Forces Radio certainly contains no Rush at all -- proof positive that Obama hates teh freedom!

Just gave it a few listening minutes. Can't tell what's going on. They came out of a tune and played a clip from one of Obama's better speeches. Nothing snarky in the programming that I heard. I can't imagine they're going liberal talk - not in Athens GA.

Athens is pretty damn liberal.

Republicans had to cobble us together with the boonies a few years back to gerrymander us into a right leaning district.

Dukakis took Clarke County (mostly Athens) by four votes way back when. My friend and I take credit.

For the record, Athens is the MOST liberal town you'll find in Georgia. I know that isn't saying much, but we are a liberal community. However, I haven't heard about this at all. I've put out a few feelers to see if I can get any more info.

Actually, Joe, I think that honor probably goes to my little town of Decatur, but Athens is definitely up there.

We're not all Dittoheads down here, folks. Frankly, it's hard for me to tell if they're satirizing the right or playing to them. It's like the New Yorker cover...only less subtle.

Well he has great taste in music and his speeches are really inspiring. Wish I lived near there even if they aren't playing the music he listens to.

I think some of you totally misunderstood the article.
Wouldn't you expect a conservative to refer to liberal radio as "Obama Gov't-Controlled Radio"?

I don't even live in the States but of course it's conservative. They will try anything to discredit President Obama.
