Appearing on Hannity Monday night, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich promised that if health care reform passes, Republicans will make repealing it a major campaign issue in 2010 and 2012.

"Let me make a straightforward promise. These bills can't be implemented before 2013. If they pass a bill which is a disaster, the number one campaign issue in 2010 and 2012 is going to be repeal the bill," he said.

"We repealed the catastrophic health legislation that was a disaster. We can repeal this monstrosity. If they're determined to put something bad in the country, the country can rise up, defeat the people who do it and repeal it," he went on.

Video after the jump.

As Think Progress points out, Gingrich was referring to Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988, which was repealed in 1989.

LMAORFT! He has a point though. The real bulk of HC reform won't start until 2013 but the taxes and such start immediately. That's bad politics.

Major assumption Nutridge ... GOPasaurs need to be in power. It's the 1930's my friend. You won't be in power until the 1950's at least. By then we'll have Medicare for All, and you will be dead.

Exactly. Did Newt miss civics class? The Republicans can't repeal a health care law unless they have a friend in the White House, or unless they get enough of a majority to override a presidential veto. And that's not gonna happen.

all the more reason for Newt to flap his lips and make the rightards happy. He'll never have to follow through on it.

So...not only will the final healthcare bill be a joke, it won't be implemented fully until 2013 and if the Righties take back Congress by 2012 they'll repeal it.

OK. What did we win here?*

*rhetorical question.

So, if it turns out that you're wrong and the final bill isn't "a joke," are you going to a) come back and say "boy was I wrong, I totally misjudged them" b) claim that the reason is isn't a joke is because progressives held their feet to the fire with irate comments on the blogs, or, c) redefine "joke" in a way that makes you right all along?

Ahaha! What a fool. On the day that a major poll is released stating that around 60 percent of people want a public option - and even MORE want health care reform - Newters comes out and says "we will repeal it." Awesome. You go ahead and run on that platform. Please. And for the record, if you think that number is high now, wait a couple years when people start realizing how much the bill has helped them.

The level of disconnect between these clowns and the American public is breathtaking. They have convinced themselves that they are the majority. Whisper "the right leaning public" enough times on Fox News and suddenly you convince yourself that its true.

Wow.

Did Newt's mom constantly tell him how smart and good-looking he was or something? You get the feeling he just doesn't notice when he goes politically streaking and no one follows him.

Maybe the wind just feels good.....

OK, gross.

And yes, right on Mostman, if they run on this they're cooked.

I have to give Newt Gingrich credit. His political strategy is pretty solid. This latest statement on what Republicans will plan to do will assure a victory in the election.

The only flaw in this plan that I can see is that said victory will not be for his party.

But, eh, everyone makes mistakes.

And from what high position of power does Newt speak? He is in such a hole right now no one can see or hear him. Did he forget he is out of office and out of power. If it was for Faux News he would be totally off the radar.

OK OK...but if the Democrats do pass a bill that doesn't work, (i.e.without a public option) he's right. They'll pay for it at the polls. Democrats are worrying about being too progressive. They should be worried about watering this thing down so much it turns into a big corporate welfare bill. I can almost guarantee, as soon as this bill is passed, insurance companies are going to raise their rates dramatically and often. They need to enact the public option sooner than 2013, making good value insurance available to everyone.

Their party is totally lost. They are just spouting off shit just to keep their base (such as it is) pacified. They won't be repealing anything and I hope the public is savvy enough not to vote them in office in 2016, either. Otherwise, all the good that will have been done by Obama will be undone by these pigs

Tanjaoui has a good thought that needs to be taken into account. Between the time the bill is signed and it comes into effect, the insurance companies and their fellow travelers can make our lives so miserable that we give in to them.

NEWT (good name) made this declaration on Hannity. Brave he ain't. Prognosticator he ain't either. Amongst all the things he isn't, he's definetly not a person of interest.

Let's all hope that the health care insurance that newt has, is declined when he gets a terminal disease and he discovers the very real death panels that truly exist right now and he has a moment of realization of what his political career has brought about - his and so many others demise. But lets not kid ourselves - newt is rich and could afford to pay the millions to treat himself.
newt is not like most Americans who are subject to the decisions that private insurance companies make everyday to deny coverage to babies who are too fat or too thin - they must be just right - like in the story of the three bears. Another fairy tale.

I sincerely hope they do make it their big campaign thing. They'll never make it back into office.

On the other hand, the fact that I'm even thinking that seriously sickens me. Not because I want them in office, but because I have to acknowledge that these people are that mentally Fucked.
