Presidential Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett said on Meet the Press this morning that while President Obama has "pushed for" a public health insurance option in health care reform legislation, "he's not demanding that it's in there."

And much like White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and senior adviser David Axelrod did in their television appearances today, Jarrett emphasized that many of the country's problems were inherited by President Obama from his predecessor.

"Let's remember the conditions that the president inherited -- a global meltdown," she said. "He has pulled us back from the precipice."

On the economy, Jarrett said "we are beginning to see signs of hope" although "the unemployment rate is still much too high."

Still, she said, "it's premature to say a second stimulus is needed."

Utterly reprehensible.

We go from taking single payer off the negotiating block, to months and months of BS, and now to this wish washy spineless statement that Obama will not demand a public option.

Get me a mop, I need to clean up the mess I made after reading this tripe.

Bush lost the popular vote, and had a 50/50 tie in the Senate, yet managed to give us wars and policies that killed the economy. What good is Obama if he can't even pass popular programs with his advantages?

It now appears that a second Obama term might mean nothing other than 4 more years before health care is reformed. I'm not voting for that.

lol. what makes you think that pushing, and not demanding a public option guarantees there wont be a public option in the final bill?

i will bet you any amount of money that there will be a public option in the final bill.

Again...a few progressive Senators have got to send a clear message: no strong, triggerless public option, no cloture.

A mandate without a public option is selling the American people a shoe, useless without its mate.

Good policy is good politics. Democrats should adjust the timeline on this legislation, to make sure it kicks in to do them some good at the polls. I'd be surprised if private insurers and bigPharma didn't raise prices as much as they can as soon as this passes.

Please just shoot me - my HOPE balloon, which has been floating across
county lines, is about to crash.

Oh - no, I can't be shot. I won't have the health insurance to pay
for my unfortunate accident.

Shoot me anyway - I can't take anymore of this "He wants a PO", "He
doesn't want a PO". Really messy messaging.

The joke's on you (and me): hope was never in that balloon; it was hiding in the attic the whole time.

Yep, thats change we can believe in! Jarret saying screw you on Health Care. You get a mandate and no choice other than purchasing from Insurance Companies that have raised rates faster than inflation. Then we have Dodd on another station complaining about CEO bonuses and doing nothing about it. And saying they will get a vote on the public option after caving and not forcing Reid to include it in the Baucus piece of shit bill. Then there is Geithner on another channel saying America has to live within its means. Then there are the Democrats in the House who gutted regulation of derivatives.

I am finding it more and more difficult everyday to say I am a Democrat. That party is so bought and paid for.

oh the drama!!

please.

i have more faith in the Prez than that. I have never seen Obama strong arm anyone into doing anything, and still the man seems to get things done the way he wants.

We know there will definitely be a public option in the House bill. there was a public option in EVERY SINGLE SENATE BILL except the Finance Committee bill. so out of 6 proposed bills, there was a public option in 5. FIVE out of SIX is an A.

has it occured to you that the white house is just playing down expectations, as i have noticed they do alot of the time?

I must concur with the comment that the dems are bought and paid for. The repugs and the dems are 2 sides of the same coin. What we've got here is corporatism or corporatocracy--not democracy. I say overthrow the whole thing--kick them all out--but nobody I know wants to do that. However, unless and until we overthrow our corporate overlords and their agents and representatives in government (and that includes all of them), we're going to get more of the same. Things won't change unless we change them. Voting does not work because it's not a democracy. Protesting and lobbying don't work. The only thing left is a (hopefully nonviolent) revolution. Jefferson expected the government to be overthrown every so often, that such stuff would be part and parcel of healthy democracy. We have not overthrown our government, as Jefferson predicted. That's why we don't have democracy. We go through some motions like voting and such, but the real power lies in the corporate elite; they ignore us and our demands because they can.

If Obama signs a health care bill that doesnt have a STRONG public option, the WH is delusional if they think the democratic base is going to turn out and vote in 2010. I wont vote to re-elect Obama in 2012 either. What's the point?

I wont get fooled again by Obama if that's the case. And, I dont think I'm the only one who feels this way!

I like the president but there is NO WAY I can see myself voting to re-elect him in 2012, unless Sarah Palin is the republican nominee. I find Barack Obama is to be an utter failure when it comes being a leader.

I understand the frustration with her statement but remember, there is nothing yet so don't get crazy yet, but just curious, who would you vote for if not Obama. The republicans. What do you think you will get then? They have already shown where they stand and it's not with us. I am really perplexed that so many are so unhappy with this President after 10 months and working harder and doing more than any President we have had in 12 years or more.

I don't get it. I need someone to explain this rationale, please. It would be a disaster for this country to not re-elect him or to elect a Republican. No democrat is going to run against him so that leaves voting Republican. You gotta be fricking crazy (and that's not meant for you in particular, but for anyone thinking of not voting for him) based on 10 months in office.

I don't believe anything that comes outof their mouths. I think this is a strategy designed to keep the GOP on tenderhooks. There will be a public option.

Wow! Obama is receiving some aweful electoral advice if he thinks he has to chase the center to win the next elections. The massive turnout in the youth and minority vote WILL NOT show up in 2010, or 2012. I would rather be eaten by a wolf than a fox. This had better be a ploy for negotiations. If not, Obama and the democrats are doomed-at least we can take solace in the fact, that the first to go will be the spineless blue dogs. Obama will be destroyed by his base. If they were furious with Bush, they will be rabid with anger if they are betrayed by one of their own.

This is sooo painful. Got to swear off the PO no PO HCR "discussion". It's getting weirder by the day. Can't figure out the Pres real motivations. Am afraid we'll get next to nothing, legislation so weak it won't even be worth arguing about. I've had to jump through the insurance industry's hoops most of my adult life. Medicare finally saved me but have two 20 something college education unemployed sons. Does this or will this ever end? It should not be on us.

i hope this is just a strategy to soften people up in the face of negotiations.

and i hope, valerie jarrett's voice is not as strong in the obama white house after she got played (or she wanted to be the heroine of chicago and decided it's in her interest that obama go to denmark) and convinced the president to go to copenhagen. but if she's out there on mtp, obama must have already forgiven her.

lol. Barack would have been the only president NOT at copenhagen to push the olympics, so i doubt that valerie would suddenly become persona non grata cos of that.

but yes, i quite agree with your first statement.

results are what matters. let's see what the final bill up for a vote looks like. if there is no PO then I would lean with the pov that obama and the dem majority is simply a mirage and that we've been had. i don't think that's a particularly controversial way of looking at this.

So does Obama feel that mandates are also optional? Don't think so.

Obama defers to the Insurance Industry rather than what is good for citizens.

Boy, these people really bother me. Here we have Rahm, probably the biggest prick the WH has seen for many years as Chief of Staff, and then we have all of these people making contradictory statements nearly every day. I don't believe that anything gets out of this WH without Rahm's OK, so WTF ! If this white house doesn't back the Public Option, then I want to see someone else in the WH in 2012.
