Liz Cheney made something of a splash in her debut as a Fox News panelist yesterday. After being introduced on Fox News Sunday by Chris Wallace as a "former State Department official, daughter of the former vice president, and first-time panelist," Cheney had an, um, interesting take on President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize.

"The president himself understands he didn't earn this prize," Cheney said. "And I think, therefore, the notion that, as the White House has said, he would go to Oslo to accept the prize would just sort of add to the farce."

Cheney continued:

What he ought to do, frankly, is send the mother of a fallen American solider to accept the prize on behalf of the U.S. military.

That would be a reminder to the Nobel committee, Cheney said, "that each one of them sleeps soundly at night because of the U.S. armed forces, because the U.S. military is the greatest peacekeeping force in the world today."

What the committee believes is, they'd like to live in a world in which America's not dominant. And I think if you look at the language of the citation, you can see that they talk about President Obama ruling in a way that makes sense to the majority of the people of the world. Americans don't elect a president to do that. We elect a president to defend our national interest. They may believe that President Obama also doesn't believe in American dominance and they may have been trying to affirm that belief with the prize. I think, unfortunately, they may be right, and I think it's a concern.

Quite a first appearance. We've asked Fox News whether we can expect more Cheney panel sightings on Fox News Sunday, but haven't heard back yet. We'll keep you posted.

Late Update: Here's the video.

Late Late Update: An inside source tells TPM that while it's certainly possible there will be more Cheney panel sightings, there are no plans for her to be a regular.

It's nice to see that Liz Cheney has both her father's good looks and his moral compass.

Yes, she has insulted the Noble Prize Committee, not to mention the whole idea of the Prizes... and what's with the title "former state department official"? WTF? I want the rest of the world to know that I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS WOMAN!

Yeah could not send anyone from your family or extended family.

How about you nominate Cindy Sheehan, Liz?

It's not a farce. It's a child who loves her father, and cannot bear to admit that he is an international war criminal who was the single biggest driver for a torture program that tortured thousands, murdered over 100 people, and has been documented to have tortured innocents left and right. He's a (the?) major driver of an unjust war that caused the deaths of over 100,000 innocent Iraqis.

Liz is basically trying to deal with one of the most massive sets of "daddy issues" in existence.

I think you're right about the psychological underpinnings.

What is a farce is FOX offering some of their air time as a Jerry-Springer-ish platform for troubled individuals like Cheney and Glenn Beck to indulge their psychogical neuroses. There will always be those who eagerly flock to the freak shows.

I disagree in one respect; I don't think she has any problems admitting that her father did those things because she supports the decisions and would have done the same. Both of them, imho, believe that america's interests are best served by dominating other countries, and Liz has just decided to go one further than her dad by becoming a public advocate for those beliefs.

Neither of them have the least bit of remorse for what happens to people/citizens - the only concerns that matter to them are those of power and control at the top.

Note to Liz, we are not dominant. Liz would like to live in a world where America is dominant, but that option went out the window with our ill-advised war in Iraq.

We haven't been dominant, except in a "We'll lie to invade your oil-producing country unilaterally" way since the moment the USSR broke apart.

The world doesn't need a superpower today. Maybe some day again, it will, but what we became in the wake of WW2, which was truly noble for a time, ran it's course.

We're just one state amongst many now.

I don't think anyone can credibly claim American dominance when we're up to our eyeballs in debt to the Chinese and the Sauds. So what was it exaclty that Cheney's Dad did about either of those creditors?

Obama is working to achieve peace in his role as commander in chief. He has been much more hands on than Bush ever was concerning the Palestinians and the Jews. Obama has wound down the Iraq war by signaling our presence will no longer be front and center there. He has increased the number of US troops in Afghanistan in order to stabilize a country that was neglected while we went to Iraq. His surge is more than a military surge, it is a dimplomatic and humanitarian surge as well. He went to Cairo and yearned for better understanding between the Muslim and Western cultures. He has laid the framework by which peace can be achieved. His efforts have not gone unnoticed obviously. I, for one, am glad he has been recognized by the Nobel Committee. I hoped Liz Cheney would also recognize these efforts instead of demonizing them. Americans elect a president to not be like Dick Cheney. I know her family will never comprehend that but maybe we can form a committee and present an award and call it, "Ruler who the world liked the least AKA The Darth Cheney award"

Can't help feeling all these Republican commentators are just steamed that, despite the fact they THINK America is dominant, (and it ain't) they can't control the opinions of five Norwegians on a Nobel Committee.

It almost seems as if nobody should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize without first checking with the Repubs first. They can't control whether Obama accepts or turns down the award, they can't control the opinions of people outside their territorial borders who truly admire the course the President has laid out -- they can't control anything about this -- and boy are their panties in a knot over it. It's all about control. Period.

And to LFC who wrote "Liz is basically trying to deal with one of the most massive sets of "daddy issues" in existence" -- amen! Couldn't agree more!

What he ought to do, frankly, is send the mother of a fallen American solider to accept the prize on behalf of the U.S. military.

Liz Cheney, Her father & their kind -- are the reason the U.S. is in the condtion that we are in -- no jobs, rising health care costs due to corporate greed, record people losing their homes because of corporate greed and scams and now they have a new scam going -- giving an individual money if they sign over their life insurance policy to them! Barack Obama has ignited the Will to Good and Peace by extending an Olive Branch to our adversaries, thereby igniting peaceful dialogue, cooperation and inclusiveness. His aura radiates peace. He extended an olive branch to Hillary Clinton after the bitter battle and even one to the GOP, although they continually spit in his face!

Huh? Seems like the Repubs are scraping the bottom of the barrel to find people who actually think this way. First they compare Obama to Hitler then they're upset that he doesn't want to dominate the world. I guess he's not living up to THEIR expectations.

Liz wants to "send the mother of a fallen American solider to accept the prize on behalf of the U.S. military"? Let's see. That'd be a bit like the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series, and then sending Mean Joe Greene to accept the trophy on behalf of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I think Liz is a bit unclear on the concept of who won.

Liz Cheney, what a joke! She has the nerve to mention the fallen soldiers considering that her father's lies got us into the unnecessary and illegitimate war in Iraq resulting in more the 4,000 fallen U.S. heroes. Having volunteered for and participated in the Vietnam war on a Navy destroyer, I am appalled that the daughter of a Vietnam war draft dodger is given a platform to spew her ignorant right wing venom. Her father clearly has no concern for the armed forces as he never participated and he sent them into harms way with inadequate numbers and insufficient equipment. Obviously her father could never be considered for the peace prize except only for his own peace in avoiding military service.
