In a statement, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) congratulated President Obama on his Nobel Peace Prize:

I congratulate President Obama on receiving this prestigious award. I join my fellow Americans in expressing pride in our President on this occasion.

And in an interview to air on CNN on Sunday, McCain said, "I think part of their decision-making was expectations. And I'm sure the president understands that he now has even more to live up to. But as Americans, we're proud when our president receives an award of that prestigious category."

This is an extraordinarily gracious statement from McCain. Though I have had issues with the man on many occasions he is showing far more class than many (most?) of his Republican brethren. He is also right, I think, to note that this prize raises the expectations for what Obama might be able to accomplish. For the sake of the world, I hope he is able to meet or exceed those expectations.

I shudder to think how far into the ditch we'd be had he won.

Nice note from the Good McCain. Credit to him and Pawlenty, whatever their motivations.

Sane. Rational. Gracious.

No wonder most Republicans hate him.

I love your comment. I totally think it's all envy. Most politicians fake it - but you can't pretend to be great-souled and get away with it for long! So what's your average Republican to do? If they've got chutzpah, it's to be as petty and measley as can be, and make that serious lack of character a hunting call for the opposition! The new counter-attack: if you can't be big, how low can you go?

That about sums it up. A tip of the hat to McCain .... while using it to hide the face of Michael Steele. I would give anything to know if the Nobel Committee heard or heard of Rush Limbaugh's "The world rejects Barack Obama!" comment. Whether they did or not, I can't help but belive that there was thought of awarding the prize to remind him that their are bigger stakes, and more worthwhile supporters, than the antics of the Limbaughs, tea-baggers and Steeles. I hope he will use it to shift the focus away from, and properly diminish, the petty things that sometimes have to hurt and distract.

Tis is the John McCain we love...without his rovian RNC/GOP handlers. Our Nation is humbled and proud with our President in this High Honor. (May the drone of the RNC and the DNC comments fade in the distance as we persevere in addressing our current and future realities.)

Nobel awards have always been intended for encouragement of positive character and action...not just for the winner and nominees but for all who notice the honor. The awards have never been awarded for only the narcissistic gratification of individual achievement. Perhaps the Nobel Committee was hoping to inspire Americans and world citizens in a ways we are not yet realizing.

McCain nails it on the "expectations" part. Sure, the Nobel Prize gives Obama more "hand," but it also raises the stakes. Fortunately, our guy doesn't flinch.

Where is the "good" McCain on health care, though?

Good for Johnny Mac, for a change.
The correct, civil, and courteous response to this news is ...

Congratulations, Mr. President.

It's one of those times when civility trumps other possible (negative) responses.

President Obama wasn't one of five nominees at the Academy Awards. The "award" isn't an American award.

The rest of the World sees and understands other aspects of his leadership. The narrow-minded bigots here live in such a confined box. They're still waving a big ol' foam "we're number one" finger in the face of the world. Wrong.

The Cairo Speech. The Berlin Speech. These are bridges to the world which reconnected us in a civilized and thoughtful and compassionate way to the rest of humanity -- finally -- after eight years of Big Nasty Bully. The world is recognizing hope.

When I travel outside the country now, I'm not wearing a Canadian flag pin. People want to talk about issues and conditions. They smile. They connect. I can feel a difference. Thank goodness.

Those who only get the news here, in narrow doses, from narrow sources are not going to understand this Nobel Peace prize. They aren't even aware of the Cairo speech; they don't care about the powerful response within Iran to their elections. These narrow-minded whiners still see health care as some elite system of Protestant work ethic good and evil retribution, not as a right for all citizens. They still think the French are the problem. So sad.

I, too, am proud. And I, too, HOPE this award reverberates in accomplishments we have yet to imagine ... in the name of Peace.

Congratulations, Mr. President.

Sen. McCain: "But as Americans, we're proud when our president receives an award of that prestigious category."

So, John, does that mean that the right-wing nut jobs out there having a hissy fit over this award aren't Americans? You just might have something there, sir. They certainly aren't acting like Americans, you know, like folks who take pride in the accomplishments of their country and the country's leaders.

Good McCain and Evil McCain fought it out again and--at least for today--the gracious, clearheaded, decent McCain won. Never know what you'll get tomorrow, though.

Ain't that the truth. I'll never figure this guy out. Unlike others, I don't think he's nothing more than an opportunist. Maybe he's one part reasonable and well-intentioned, one part hot-headed and prone to making bad decisions (and affiliations) as a result, and one part disinterested and thus ignorant of large swaths of public policy. If that's close, then the sad thing is that the second and third aspects of his character are things he could have changed and been a much better politician, and probably person, than he is.

Sounds good, but I'm afraid my first reaction was that this is McCain being mavericky. He does love to zig when the rest of his party zags.

Nice words, John, but that type of "we" talk won't sit well with your core constituents. They demand more of a "us" and "them" mentality.

Peace has landed. Congratulations President Obama. You're even getting a little bi-partisan support on this one.
On McCain, do you think the rotten John runs into the so-so John somedays?
