A spokesman for the State Department had this take on President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize, reports CNN:

Certainly from our standpoint, this gives us a sense of momentum -- when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes.

The comment was made by Assistant Secretary PJ Crowley, a spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"There is an opportunity here," Crowley said. "The tone has changed -- but obviously we recognize that, while the tone in the world has changed, the challenges remain. They are very significant."

He was referring, of course, to the incident last December when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at President George W. Bush, who ducked out of the way. Bush was holding a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

People were talking about lack of reasons thus far, being more of a foward looking award, but he did stop torture and that's probably a big step toward a more peaceful planet.

Wonderful!!!

As a soldier I have never been so embarrassed by my country in all my life to think we fight and die for this kind of world show of disrespect of our Commander and Chief. And people wonder why we are always under attack..BECAUSE THE ENEMY SEE'S THE DISRESPECT AND ACTS ON IT!

I have cried all day.

And just in case they forget:

I don't expect a soldier to "cry all day" but thanks for reminding me about the DTV Delay act. That by itself is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Don't forget that on Obama's first day in office he did this:
Obama Signs Order Ending Abortion 'Gag Rule'
And, at the same time, he undid a bundle of bad laws created by Bush and Cheney.

People also overlook Iraq -- he was opposed, unlike almost all other US pols, it was WILDLY unpopular in Europe, and we are leaving Iraq next year. Sorry to inrrupt the weird group Iraq amnesia that has been imposed on the nation for some time. Resume the amnesia. "Iraq?" If Kissinger can get it for 'ending' Vietnam, Obama can certainly get it solely for withdrawing from Iraq. It's a little odd that it hasn't been mentioned once by the pundits.

That one comment says it all. Good for the Nobel committee. Deal with it, Wingnuts. Welcome to the real world, not right-wing fantasyland.

Out of curiosity, who would the right wing want to see the Nobel Peace Prize?

After 8 long years Bush accomplished getting a shoe (really 2) thrown at him. Oh yeah, he also started a couple of wars with no actual purpose or end in sight & didn't win. He turned our friends into enemies, stole all the national treasure he could get his hands on, shredded roughly 200 years worth of our nations liberties & rights, read our mail & listened to our phone calls, & left us with a bunch of renewed neo-cons to deal with, etc etc etc.
President Obama has shown the rest of the world that we are on a much better path & given the world what it craves, a strong, wise & peaceful America & American leader.
This is a great honor & we are getting back to truly deserving it.
