Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said on Morning Joe today that she doesn't think Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) should step down as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee because of an ongoing ethics committee investigation for alleged offenses including not reporting income on tax and financial disclosure forms and renting apartments at below-market value (Here's TPMmuckraker's most recent rundown of the allegations.) Waters also suggested that Rangel may not be alone in the House in failing to properly fill out disclosure forms.

House Majority Leader has said he'll block any resolution by House Republicans to forcibly remove Rangel as chairman. Rep John Carter (R-TX), the Republican conference secretary, has said he'll introduce such a resolution this week if Rangel doesn't step down.

This morning, Waters said that Rangel shouldn't give up his chairmanship.

"He should not step down from his chairmanship," she said. "He should keep working and let the investigation take its course. And if the investgation proves that he has done something wrong, that he should be penalized, then that's the time to consider stepping down or retiring."

Waters also suggested that Rangel's not the only one who's failed to fill out disclosure forms properly.

"I wanna tell you, there are many members who if you go back over all of their records over the years, you're going to find that there are disclosures that were not made."

It is not often that Maxine Waters says something coherent but she is right on with this statement:

"I wanna tell you, there are many members who if you go back over all of their records over the years, you're going to find that there are disclosures that were not made."

These criminals should be identified, removed from Congress and serve jail time if necessary.

Why is Congress exempt from the laws that apply to the rest of us?

You're required to fill out a financial disclosure form every year listing the approximate value of all your assets? Most of us don't have to do that.

Funny, I've never had any particular problem understanding Maxine Waters and what she is saying. Maybe it comes from having more than a third grade grasp of the English language or something.

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (Republican Rep from Md 6th District) forgot to list $2M in income from realestate development deals in his district on his 2007 - 2008 disclosure form. His excuse, his wife filled out the form for him.

For the good of the Congress and the good of the Democratic Party, Rangel should step down. He's had a good run and given the stakes of the political battles that are going on, the last thing we need is the appearance of crookedness, particularly when the guy responsible to creating tax policy can't even fill out his own forms. The Democratic leadership has a chance to really take a stand and show that, unlike the GOPers under Hastert & Co., they will not stand for shenanigans in their own ranks.

Nancy Pelosi promised an ethical COngress - now let's see it.

It's okay to disregard the rules and the laws...
Everyone does it..
GARBAGE!!!

These people were voted into an office which by all rights is supposed to LEAD this nation, not degrade and disregard the wishes of those who voted for them.

They are their to exemplify integrity and honesty. To do anything else is to lead this nation and all it has stood for these past couple of centuries down that slope of internal destruction.

And "We the People" seem to believe this is just fine, as long as we can keep on watching CSI and reality shows...

...so goes our decline... IMHO

I would hazard to guess, you can find at least one violation in the background of every chairman on both sides of the aisle. Probably not a good idea to force them out, everytime one comes to light. Unless and until they are covicted of something by court or ethics committee.

Maxine Waters has a few questions of her own to answer so of course she would defend Rangel. You can read more about some of her questionable actitivies at CREW's 15 Most Corrupt website. Charlie's on the list too. Sorry but it is time for him to step aside. I trust CREW and Melanie Sloan.
