This week, the Obama Administration released a list of some 45 pieces of artwork it has borrowed to decorate the First Couple's private residence and the East and West Wings of the White House.

The list, which is primarily made up of modern and contemporary pieces, was selected from several museums and private collections in Washington D.C., The New York Times reports.

The selection ranges from Rothko paintings and Degas sculptures to paintings of Native Americans by George Catlin. Though only six works by female painters were chosen, the Obamas did select a number of pieces by African-American and Native-American painters, such as Glenn Ligon's "Black Like Me No. 2."

White House curator William Allman described the selection as showing an "interest in truly modern art" that is greater than that of previous presidents. Hirshhorn Museum curator Kerry Brougher was also surprised by some of the choices: "There are some very interesting figures. It's more interesting and shows a greater diversity of art than I've seen."

Of course, no Obama decision is complete without input from the conservative pundits. Michelle Malkin, for example, has dedicated several blog posts to criticizing the list. First, she mocked the selection of Ed Ruscha's "I think I'll ..." which examines indecision through depictions of phrases like "maybe...yes..." and "maybe...I'll..." Malkin wrote of this painting's selection, "If Barack Obama's lack of authority and certitude weren't costing so many lives, this would be comical."

Malkin also investigated a FreeRepublic claim that "Watusi (Hard Edge)," a 1963 painting by Alma Thomas, is actually a knock-off of Henri Matisse's 1953 work "L'Escargot." Malkin finished her post with "I know, I know. Cries of 'RAAAAACIST' in 3, 2, 1...," followed by "Behold my new creation, 'Twist':", and a rotated picture of the Mona Lisa.

Malkin's just mad because they didn't select the piece of art that best represents her: Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

I think you mean the self portrait "The Picture of Dorian Grey" An uncanny likeness of this hagg. I will say this for Ms Malkin....if her eyes were any further apart, they'd be at her temples. Also, if you want to have some fun, google the word Malkin!

None of the art the Obamas chose even looks like anything real anyway...

They're just pissed that if Shrub had released a list of art, it'd all be Nascar posters and pictures of himself.

I can't let this go... Between this and Glenn Beck's explication of the 'symbology' of Rockefeller Center, it's good to see that art matters once more.

So Malkin claims that Alma forged the Matisse because she couldn't think up anything to paint on her own. Not only that, but a cabal of art critics, curators, liberals, terrorists, communists, and the Obamas accepted this fraudulent artifact as representative of the highest achievements of American art. It took the crack team of art historians over at the FreeRepublic to expose the whole rouse. Indeed, simply by showing the two works together (one rotated 90 degrees, of course, but what does that matter?) it was revealed to every commonsense American that Thomas simply copied Matisse. And what could be worse than a black woman copying a white man whose 'art' any child could do anyway?

It's impossible for Malkin to imagine that Thomas may have explicitly wanted people to note the resemblance between her work and a well known masterpiece. Or that the conceptual implications of a black woman appropriating the work of a white artist who routinely 'copied' directly from African art might raise any additional questions about the historical power dynamics that have historically sanctioned certain kinds of 'art and imitation.' No, the bottom line for Malkin is that the two kind of look alike, which means Thomas and the Obamas are dumb.

It's a good thing, probably, that Malkin is missing much of the point here. Her head would probably pop right off if she really thought about what Thomas was doing, and the questions about race, gender, and art implicit in Watusi. It is definitely much, much 'worse' than Malkin imagines.

Maybe soon she'll get to the Glenn Ligon piece that the Obamas also now have in the White House. But he just copied some text that someone else wrote! And you can't even really read it in some places! That's right, Michelle... it's only copying. How stupid.

If you look at the two pieces of art the similarity is remarkable. It can't be purely by accident which just means that there is an interesting story to be told there. They are different media, the colors are different but the pattern, size and shape are astoundingly similar, so similar it couldn't be an accident.

That said, the idea that there was some kind of fraud or deceit here seems pretty ridiculous. Artists copy other artists they admire all the time to study composition and techniques so there is nothing unusual about this painting existing.

It is not an accident. In fact someone printed an interview with Thomas where she explained the piece as a deliberate act. By rotating the piece 90 degrees and reversing as best she could the color palette and changing the medium the she was simultaneously doing a tribute of sorts and making an artistic message. Would Malkin feel better if she had called it 'Matisse invert'

Whether that message was the one Blacksquad suggests or something else and how successful she was in delivering it is something the art critics and historians can debate, but the notion that she painted this thinking that the art world would not pick up on the inspiration of the piece is absurd.

Lots of people don't get modern art. Mostly I don't get modern art, (although I have some inherited beautiful pieces on my walls) but that doesn't mean there is nothing to get.

Malkin seems to think she has made some discovery here when instead her observation sharesl much with dismissing Warhol because after all he was just copying a can of soup or Van Gogh because his pictures were not naturalistic.

I don't find this particular piece of art compelling, in part because I don't find the work she based it on compelling. But the Obama's like it and Malkin can stuff it and return to her collection of Jeff Koons schlock or whatever else she likes to collect. It is nice for the Obamas to share their taste in art, but they are under no obligation to defend it in total or for any given piece. It is what it is.

Yes they are assholes, complete assholes. In this case how people conduct themselves is a window to their souls very much in line with how artists express their souls with the pieces they create. If you line up every work of art created by an individual artist in their lifetime you would have a map to the journey of their soul. With Republicans you can also map their soul by lining up everything they do and grasp the real ugly putrid center of their beings.

I saw Michelle Malkin on a clip from Fox the other day. I have never seen anyone more ungracious and consumed with hate in all my life. The plastic surgery will not be able to disguise her innate ugliness for too much longer just as Ann Coulter's plastic surgery is no longer enough to keep the ugliness at bay. They are both embarrassments to females all over the world.

Why is Michelle Malkin always writing about "snorting" and "girding your loins?" What woman writes like this? Does she think she is a man? Or is it a man writing her material? And this obvious pig who is always snorting and grabbing her crotch has the nerve to criticize Michelle Obama, for anything?

Malkin is like a mental patient who has calmed down just long enough to be let out of her staight jacket only to start shrieking and smearing herself with her own feces again. Time for electro shock again little insane one.

I love your analogy of her as a mental patient.Thank you. This lady is truly consumed by hatred. And after a while hate takes its toll in one`s physical appearance and behavior, both of which in her case translate to ugly.

blacksq, thank you for reminding me that many of the French Impressionists relied heavily on African/Asian/Polynesian motifs.

Certainly welcome news... Reminds me of the bumper sticker: This time I want a smart President...

As for Malkin, her insanity is her bread and butter. I feel sorry for the woman. She has painted herself into a corner and the road is all downhill from here.

Gosh, didn't know Malkin is an art expert too! What a multi-talented woman! Maybe she will use that great mind to create a perpetual motion machine, figure out cold fusion and discover the great unification theory. Intelligence like hers is extremely rare.

This is from "theartnewspaper" which my husband prescribes to: AND, this was in July:

“I don’t believe there’s been any administration that has been as interested in contemporary art,” said Hirshhorn chief curator Kerry Brougher, who worked with the White House in arranging the loans. “I was extremely impressed when they sent over the list of what they were interested in borrowing, because it showed a wide range of interests and a wide spectrum and understanding of both modern and contemporary art.”

What does Malkin know about art, one wonders?

Michell knows art like fox knows news. She also never learned the lesson that you shouldn't make an ugly face because it might just stay like that forever.

I hate modern art. Give me the portraits of the 19th century! Ah! That makes me glad while modern art just makes me roll my eyes.

I think Malkin is crushed that the Obamas didn't accept her offer to loan them her velvet Reagan or Limbaugh paintings.
