Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) both said on Fox News Sunday today that White House gate crashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi ought to be punished -- perhaps with criminal charges -- for sneaking into a state dinner at the White House last Tuesday.
"It's an incredible situation," Bayh said, adding that "it's not a laughing matter that people could get that close to the president and vice president that aren't supposed to be there."
Bayh compared the Salahis' possible effect on White House security to the way shoe bomber Richard Reid changed security procedures at airports.
"This couple may change the way people go to the White House," Bayh said, adding that he expects security in the future to be "a lot stricter than it has been."
Kyl agreed that the book should be thrown at the Salahis.
"You have to have a strong deterrent," the Republican senator said. "They should be in some way brought to justice."

I don't know if it would be "hilarious" if they were sent to jail, but it would be healthy for the rest of America to figure out that breaking the law in the service of reality TV stardom is unacceptable.
But I think we should also at least questoin the rest of the guest list... is there any reason there were so many celebrities in attendance?
Would it be possible for my taxpayer dollar to fund a state dinner where, instead of Brian Williams as a guest, we could have an award-winning high school science or humanities teacher?
I don't know that I find the Salahis so much less compelling than some of the attendees. It seems to me that columnist Tom Friedman has little more honor than my local bus driver, who not only delivers me safely to my destination but wasn't stupid enough to promote the Iraq invasion some years ago. And my local bus driver exemplifies "green living" much better than the wealthy idiots like Friedman who promote carbon saving yet live in absurdly expensive-to-light-and-heat mansions.
This country needs to take a serious look at its pathetic self.

WTF is wrong with you people?
We live in country where 1% of the population is in prison. 1 out of every 100 people are in prison. And now it's create this culture were people want to randomly throw people in jail for annoying.
These people seem kind of annoying but they are hardly hard core criminals. No one got hurt by there little stunt, fine them and let them go.

If they broke the law, they should be punished. Whether or not anyone got hurt is not the point. This is a national security issue--not playtime for people with inflated egos and no common sense. They wanted attention--let 'em have it. Plus, from reports about their finances, it sounds like they might be happy for a free place to stay and some hot meals in the near future.

I agree with Delmoi. This was a harmless prank by two people who are too full of themselves, with apparently too much time and money on their hands.
Far from throwing them in jail, Obama should invite them into the Oval Office and thank them publicly for revealing what a shabby excuse for security is the protection provided to the President of the United States.
We all know presidents are at risk of lunatics when they go out in public. These two revealed how easy it would be for a determined assassin to get (literally) right into Obama's private space. That's a very sobering thought. That's what Bayh and Kyl should be worrying about.

Thank you Delmoi, My sentiments exactly. Instead of throwing these people in jail, take a long hard look at the douchebags running security that are supposed to stop this sort of thing. My GOD these people waltzed right in and danced the night away. Doesn't that raise an alarm about the security surrounding our POTUS? Come on people, let's give credit where credit is due and it isn't due anywhere here.

Little stunt you say delmoi? Here's a little backround on this cute pranksters:
He drove a family business into the ground (delcaration of Bankruptcy). He has MULTIPLE Warrant in Debt and Unlawful Detainers against him in Fauquier County and he is being evicted from his home! And now he is to open another business? Not to mention all of the claims against this man from the VA Department of Labor.
Please do not visit this winery, they dont even make their own wines! While at Oasis, Rappahanock vineyards "bottled" the wine and oasis slapped a label on it.
Tareq was too concerned with purchasing a new aston martin than to worry about the quality of his wine. He would even make the employees go out and polish the car every day. Funny how he would not pay the employees overtime and he showed up with a new 165k automobile.
He also placed the employees on two different payrolls, Oasis Winery and Oasis Enterprises. Even if you did not work in the winery, you would receive a paycheck from them. This was done so he could avoid paying his employees overtime. The employees would have to work 18 hour days (when the events occured at the winery eg weddings, concerts, ect). No overtime.
Anything that would happen regarding pay...Tareq would blame his mother. He shafted employees out of thousands of dollars.
They are two bit grifters, out on the town.

Smoke on this delmoi:
The Salahis are heavily in debt, and have been involved in a vicious lawsuit with Tareq's parents over the family winery in which they accuse Tareq of running the business into the ground with his profligate spending.
"They owe everybody a zillion dollars," said a source close to them. "Doors are starting to get closed in their faces. Their money is running out, and they are on their last gasp. He was just spending his parents' money recklessly."
The couple had been banking on landing a role on the upcoming reality show "Real Housewives of DC," to help pull them out of their financial tailspin, but may now have to rely on leveraging their short shelf life to broker interview fees.

Ok one more for "Leave the Salamis alone" delmoi:
Tareq Salahi, co-founder of The Land Rover America's Polo Cup, and his parents have been battling in court over control of the family's Oasis Winery in Fauquier County, Va.
The parents claim they need to sell the 108-acre winery to pay off more than $1 million in debt their son has allegedly tallied. Tareq Salahi is fighting to hold on to the winery, betting he and his wife can turn the business around next year.
His father, however, has little faith.
"They lost the home," Dirgham Salahi, 82, told The News, explaining that his son's 4,000-square-foot house in Front Royal, Va., is in foreclosure.
No one answered the door of the couple's $660,000 home, which remains furnished, and a dog could be heard barking inside. A photo of Tareq Salahi posing with Prince Charles was prominently displayed on a wall.
Michaele Salahi told Washingtonian magazine in 2004 that she owned close to 300 pairs of shoes.
Neighbors said the couple are far from royalty.
"Nobody wants to deal with them," said a neighbor.
Another neighbor said the Salahis were living out of hotels around Washington in recent weeks. The neighbor said the couple's cars, including a Maserati and an Aston Martin, have been repossessed.
"People come in our driveway looking for them," the neighbor said. "The sheriffs have come by twice lately."

Preposterous. You don't invent laws to take away someone's liberty and subject them to years of confinement because of embarrassment. I'm ashamed that so many Americans, politicians and others, are calling for jail time for a couple of court jesters. Is it a crime to insult the king?
Bayh and Kyl aren't worthy of being Senators.
-------
Continuing... why do you think they should be prosecuted? Do you even know what law they are alleged to have broken? Or are you of the mind that federal laws should be studied on vain to find some technical violation in order to put two people into jail for an arbitrary time? Those of you that are advocating imprisonment, I hope you're never subject to the type of politically-motivated prosecution that you wish upon others.
Thank goodness President Obama and Attorney General Holder have enough common sense to realize that no prosecution is even remotely warranted.
Shame on those who want to deny liberty to people that embarrass our leaders.

I'd bring them to trial and make them pay court costs after a dismissal. They may have-- in their own bizarre way-- helped improve security.

Using the 'deterrent' angle for the sake of security is pointless. Harsh penalties as a preventative measure ONLY work on people who actually care about what happens to them after they get caught - ie, the people who aren't particularly dangerous. If you're concerned about security, then you tighten security, not use it as a justification to crucify those who got past for a laugh. These people could be sentenced to fifty years jail, but if the security itself isn't improved, that jail sentence as an example isn't going to do a single thing to stop a determined terrorist. The main security risk people like that pose is as a waste of security personnel's time and by distracting their attention.
To be honest, I'd like to see them prosecuted under the same laws that would see a gate-crasher prosecuted for busting into a private suburban party. (If any such law exists? Does trespass apply to the Whitehouse grounds? Surely it would, to allow tight control over access for security reasons...) Nothing political there... Just the law, as it is available to any citizen. This isn't behaviour that should be tolerated in ANY situation and to let people get away with it is a subconscious endorsement for those so inclined.

The "tut-tutting"of these mischievous rascals makes me want to puke. I'd like to see security heads roll. These two grifters have their hands full with bill collectors nipping at their high heels, their window of opportunity has long since closed. Screw them. They're in way deeper shit than security breeches. When there credit cards are canceled then we will see how ingenious they are. Those clever rascals will love 3 square meals and a roof over their grifter asses. Bon Voyage little cons.

I haven't been following this trivial reality show inanity, at least not to the bizarrely obsessive degree that the TPM people have. But... why should they be charged? And with what?
The Secret Service screwed up. They shouldn't have been allowed in. But it's not a crime to visit the White House, nor should it be, and it's not a crime to be allowed into the White House, nor should it be.

I wish as much furor had erupted when the Bush team had their security lapse about the same point of their term. Well, it was a bit earlier...in September...but then they had specific warnings it was about to happen.
