Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave an interview to conservative talk radio host Scott Hennen today, in which he slammed President Obama's "fundamentally harmful" bow to the Japanese Emperor during his trip to Asia.
In the interview, Cheney says that when the President bows to a foreign leader, "our friends and allies don't expect it and our adversaries perceive it as a sign of weakness."
"I think it's fundamentally harmful and it shows in my mind that this is a guy, a president, who would bow, for example, who doesn't fully understand or have the same perception of the U.S. role in the world that I think most Americans have," he says.
Cheney concludes: "What I see in President Obama is somebody who bows before foreign leaders and spends his trips aboard primarily apologizing for U.S. behavior. I find that very upsetting."
The former vice president did not offer the same criticism of his former bosses, former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Richard Nixon. Bush traveled to Tokyo for Emperor Hirohito's funeral in 1989 and bowed to the casket. Nixon bowed to Chairman Mao Zedong during his historic visit to China in 1972.
Cheney's interview follows remarks by his daughter, Liz Cheney, that suggest that Obama's bow means her father should run for President in 2012. After watching a video of Obama bowing, and then one of her relatively stiff-backed father meeting the Japanese emperor in 2007, Liz Cheney said on Fox News Sunday: "You could also look at the comparison and think, Cheney 2012."
Cheney also weighed in on the Department of Justice decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other suspected terrorists in civilian court in New York City. Cheney said:
I can't for the life of me figure out what Holder's intent here, and in terms of having Khalid Sheikh Mohammed tried in a civilian court, other than to have some kind of show trial here. They'll simply use it as a platform to argue their case. They don't have a defense to speak of. It'll be a place for them to stand up and defend the terrible ideology that they adhere to.

Cheney will be the ruination of Republicans chances in the next election. He totally forgets that news folks can fact check his insane comments. And sometimes, he does not even have the guts to make the comments himself, so he sends his kids out to do the dirty work. A great thing about President Bush is that he keeps his mouth shut about the Obama administration but we can never expect that sort of class out of Cheney or his kids.

Right, I consider that Vice President Cheney was largely responsible for the meltdown of the Republican Party and his blabbing is totally out of line. I truly admire President George W. Bush for how he is handling being the "former" President's job. Bush has enough class that he no doubt does not feel the need to criticize like Cheney does. Amazing, after all the problems Cheney was responsible for, that he thinks he has any moral authority to make these wild statements. Even his silly statements about Obama's bow are just sour grapes. So no surprise his kids make such foolish and jealous sounding statements about Obama. I note that the tide is turning and that most Americans appreciate the Obama behavior when he is in other countries. At least Obama has class and is not a disgusting person like Cheney is. How he damages our party all the time.

How come we've collectively forgotten Bush's bow to the Taliban when he gave them 10 million dollars at the outset of his presidency?
That was a follow-up to his hosting them at the governor's mansion in Texas.
Oh, let's not forget Bush setting up China as the backer for his folly in Iraq.
So, Obama's polite bow to a Chinese leader is nothing. Zero. Nada.

Cheney is a chump.
Obama bowed to the Japanese emperor. He did the same when he met QE II. It's called protocol. But Cheney is calling it subservience. Still remember when Michelle Obama, in a moment of exuberance, actually touched QE II, the right was using it as evidence of her knowledge of protocol, not to mention a decided lack of proper "breeding"/
these people, with Cheney at the top of list, are F*CKHEADS, but I think they could yet wind up back in power. Especially if Obama doesn't start looking like he cares about Main Street as much as he has Wall Street

Cheney believes America is an empire and that the President should act like an Emperor.
He thinks we are blowing it because we have not exploited WWII by taking over the world.
Republicans loved Ronny Ray-gun because of the myth that he defeated our last enemy and that we should take our even more rightful place as rulers of the world - but Liberals and bowing weaklings are preventing this from happening.
Cheney calls this patriotism.

"......and spends his trips aboard primarily apologizing for U.S. behavior. I find that very upsetting."
This is understandable, because what Dick is really saying is, "....and spends his trips aboard primarily apologizing for my behaviour and the behaviour of my administration. I find that very upsetting."
What Dick (and sadly, quite a lot of Americans) can't seem to understand is that fear and respect are two very different things. The world started off respecting America, and enemies feared the consequences of engaging our military. In just eight short years, Cheney and Bush managed erode most of that respect, and the "potency" of our military to neutralize the ragtag group responsible for 9/11 speaks for itself.
Rebuilding respect for America is one of Obama's first responsibilities, and one of the ways you do that is by showing respect for cultures you'd like to have cooperate with you. Done right, it makes you stronger, not weaker, and Obama "gets it." Cheney and his ilk never did, and never will.

I understand Dick Cheney and his kind disapprove of everything the Obama administration and the Democratic majority do, and I also know that there are plenty of conservative commentators only too happy to give him a forum for his thoughts, but what I don't get is why I have to be subjected to it day after day. He's out of power. His party's candidate lost the presidency and Republicans fell further behind in Congress. Perhaps we should stop reporting their every whine and complaint, and stop giving value to their words by hanging on every utterance. Ignore them. I have enough things in my life to upset me without hearing, each and every day, about one more Republican disapproval of how I believe the country should be run. We won the election, now I want them just to go away.

It is now wonder that "Little Dick" is upset because his actions and behaviors as V.P. have to be apologized for and he is going to pout about it, maybe even hold his breath until he turns blue.

I don't agree with the whole "America should never admit a mistake or show any sign of weakness" psychosis that that Cheney seems so obsessed with. However, a United States president SHOULD NOT be going around the world genuflecting before various foreign dictators and potentates. Not because it's a sign of weakness, but because America is a democracy where "all men are created equal."
I am sick and tired of seeing my president - who also happens to be my employee - continually bowing a scraping before foreign royalty. It seems to me that whether it's bending over for the big shots on Wall Street or prostrating before Emperors and Kings, Obama has a obsequious streak when it comes to entrenched power. It's also extraordinarily politically obtuse and helps to explain his tanking poll numbers.
