Fox News' Sean Hannity apologized last night for using footage of a much bigger 9/12 rally during a segment about Rep. Michele Bachmann's tea party rally at the Capitol last week -- apparently in an attempt to make the tea party look much bigger than it actually was. Jon Stewart called Hannity out on the video snafu on The Daily Show earlier this week.

Hannity's apology came at the end of his show.

"Although it pains me to say this, Jon Stewart, Comedy Central, he was right."

Hannity continued:

Now on his program last night he mentioned that we had played some incorrect video on this program last week while talking about the Republican health care rally on Capitol Hill. He was correct. We screwed up. We aired some video of a rally in September, along with the video from the actual event. It was an inadvertent mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. So Mr. Stewart, you were right. We apologize. But by the way, I wanna thank you and all your writers for watching.

Here's the video:

And in case you missed it, you can watch the original Daily Show video here.

Yes. You can tell because it favored the GOP or hurt the Democrats, just like all "inadvertent mistakes" on Pox News.

Exactly, Grouch. Caught red handed.

Inadvertently I engaged in activity which resembled robbing a bank when I thought I was picking up my laundry. Congrats to those sharp-eyed coppers who first realized I had gotten the addresses mixed up since the bank sign was poorly lit and confusing; otherwise, I might not have realized the error till I got away and executed my hostage.

Sean, we all know it was not a "mistake" and it was not "inadvertent." I mean you had to visually confirm the other lie you were telling: that there were 40,000 people in attendence when in fact there were maybe 4000. And it's not the first time that you have used video editing to mislead. It's your bread and butter. Telling lies to foment discontent and anger. I am thinking acknowledging this is probably a mistake on your part. Now let's see if the Daily Show or someone else puts together a compilation of your other fabrications.

There are two forms of lying:

1. Commission: telling a known fasehood.

2. Omission: withholding a known truth.

Often both are intermingled.

You can tell Hannity is lying when --

1. His lips are moving.

2. His lips are not moving.

Often both are intermingled.

Well, it’s all pretty simple. They just left the film in one of their cameras from, you know, the tea party earlier this year and then filmed the new event on the end of the roll of film and then they developed it and so the two bits of footage were on the same roll of film and so one accidentally got mixed up with the other one when they were splicing, you know, the film for the b roll for Hannity’s show. It was an accident. Really. And nobody noticed the difference. Really.

"An inadvertent mistake" my ass. I'm pretty sure it's worse to directly lie about the intent than it was to put it out there in the first place. The only way to have done this was to have done it intentionally. And of course it's in their interest to do it, and they have a pattern of similar conduct. I hope Stewart runs a follow-up.

If he actually fessed up, yes. But in lying about the process - nothing goes on a program like Hannity's without at least several people vetting it, and the continuity issues were flagrant (different weather, trees green vs no leaves) - actually torpedos the entire effort. It's the ultimate non-apology and just invites Stewart to do a follow up pointing out how "inadvertant" anything like this is. Especially with Hannity, who has repeatedly been caught engaging in selective editing in a way that completely misrepresents the statements of the subject.

It was an inadvertent mistake

Manatee's "inadvertent mistake" is challenged by FOX's manipulation of the September video by using a production device to 'zoom into' the identical footage as was clearly shown in Stewart's split screen of the September and November tapes. FOX, by the proof contained in their video manipulation, intended to deceive.
Liars lie...

What bothers me most is that no other mainstream news outlet seemed to notice the 'inadvertent mistake' or, noticing it, said nothing. What Fox News did was a serious breach of journalism ethics, I should think, regardless of whether it was committed by a pundit or a real journalist.

Hold on, scratch that last remark. Fox News has no real journalists.

I think the only reason he apologized is it was an easy one (whoops, some production assistant made an innocent mistake) and makes him look good to his viewers and the media elite. He doesn't have to admit any of the other countless distortions, such as editing Obama's Cairo speech to sound like the exact opposite of what he said. He gets to call this a simple error, pat himself on the back and move on.

Clearly Sean is relying on his viewers to know nothing about video library management or cataloging. Mistakes like this aren't accidental. The editor/producer had to know exactly where and how to find the footage. It can't be reasonably imagined as someone grabbing one of the tapes lying around that someone forgot to label. Million to one odds. What is more statistically likely is that it was intentional and he thought no one would notice. This is called propaganda. Was his claim that 20k to 45k+ people came also an inadvertent mistake?

BTW I listened to the first hour of Hannity's radio thing yesterday, and counted 21 "you know"s but I may have missed several; almost seven minutes of air time were given over to promoting his TV show, his Freedom Concerts or his forthcoming interactive Republican Victory in 2010 website. The White House calling out Fox News provoked mostly a negative response from the pundit crowd and MSM scribes. I thought it was risky but smart. Now it may be paying off. In just the last week Fox News has fact-checked Sarah Palin ( who would have ever thought ), Brit Hume corrects Bill O'Reilly telling him the vast majority of Americans do indeed like the Public Option, and now Hannity, caught with his pants down, has to apologize to his audience for essentially not being honest. Perhaps the Whites House has forced Fox News to now make an effort at " Fair and Balanced."

The White House's critique of FOX gave "permission" to others in the media to do the same by showing it's safe to do so. That there's no real risk in it becasue it puts FOX on the defensive by pressing on its guilty conscience.

That began the momentum of going after the previously mis-perceived "invulnerable" FOX for being what it is: a prapaganda mill for the far-right America-hating lunatic fringe, led by a white supremacist subversive foreigner.

You're paid to be an asshole? I'd thought you did it for free.

I'd give Hannity (or rather, his producers) credit for this, but it's clear that they're just using this embarrassment as an opportunity to keep lying -- specifically, to suggest that it was inadvertant instead of deliberate.

You'll recall that the WH changed its story 2-3 separate times about the "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" banner after each story was subsequently debunked. These people have absolutely no shame.

They cry "WOLF". When it's determined that there's no wolf, they cry "COYOTE". When it's determined that there's no coyote, they cry "FOX" (well, they cry *on* Fox, but...). When it's determined that there's no fox, they cry "WOLVERINE".

And the Villagers never catch on...

I think Jon will take the high road and accept this apology like a gentleman.

Although the opportunity to snark on "I wanna thank you and all your writers for watching" seems too good to pass up... maybe we'll see something really deft in reply.

Congress witnessed Nov. 5 first hand. What will converge on DC next year could very possibly dwarf all other political rallies in US history.

Best job on the planet = writing for TDS or Colbert.
Worst job on the planet = watching Faux News all day for material for TDS and Colbert.

I'm still waiting for the Fox 'mistake' that makes a Dem look better or a repug worse than is actually the case. Funny how all the GOP pedophiles, men's room sword swallowers and diaper kings end up with a D after their names on Fox.

Here's why Bush would never apologize. The commentariat doesn't have the maturity to appreciate it. Tsk.

I'm not convinced 1) Bush couldn't apologize for that reason - I imagine it was a more macho "can't ever look vulnerable 'cause it's weakness" motive, nor 2) that this kind of apology - occurring only because their "mistake" was caught - requires a whole lot of "appreciation."

And on a more general note:

Dear Sean - you know, of course, that the only one at "The Daily Show" that watches your show is an intern, whose sole job is no doubt to catch your lies, exaggerations, and inadvertent funnies. If there's a really good one, I'm sure it's also their job to pass it around so the whole staff can laugh at will.

Silence- You must be too young to remember the Vietnam War rallies. No way are there enough tea baggers to come close to the crowds against the war. Just remember that all the talking points, info, etc. you get from Fox is from a network owned by a foreign born naturalized citizen, who only became a US citizen so he could own a tv station. Any country where he has bought a media outlet he has insinuated himself in the local politics. Any thing he does is to advance his own agenda. Liberals are the patriots. We want what is best for the USA, not what some foreigner wants. You keep helping him to try to bring this country down. We liberals will keep defending it.

To Jon Stewart. I apologize. To the viewers who have no problem with being provided false and misleading information, just another turn on the merry-go-round at FOX.

Cool day in hell! Hannity "apologized" by saying that someone else (the editorial "we") screwed up....not much integrity here!
