Colorado State Sen. Dave Schultheis (R-Colorado Springs) posted a tweet yesterday that called for a derailing of President Obama's agenda in a rather bold way. The blog Colorado Pols caught the statement from Schultheis's account.

"Don't for a second, think Obama wants what is best for U.S. He is flying the U.S. Plane right into the ground at full speed. Let's Roll," the tweet reads.

"Let's roll" were the final words of Todd Beamer, a passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 93, one of the four flights hijacked on September 11 and the only one to crash before reaching its intended target. The flight was diverted to Washington, D.C. after it was hijacked, but crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers tried to thwart the hijackers.

This isn't the first time Sen. Schultheis has had his brash way with words. The staunch conservative lawmaker voted against a Colorado bill requiring pregnant women to undergo HIV testing to help reduce risks for the baby and offered this in the way of an explanation:

What I'm hoping is that yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that. The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years ... begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior. We can't keep people from being raped. We can't keep people from shooting each other. We can't keep people from jumping off bridges. People drink and drive, and they crash and kill people. Poor behavior has its consequences.

Wait a minute. If I read that last quote correctly, he's saying that we can't keep women from being raped, so we have to force them to live with the results of their promiscuous behavior? Am I reading that right?

I knew these people were assholes, but that may be a new low in assholery.

His idea of forcing raped women to "live with the consequences of their behavior" is actually slightly less offensive (if that can be imagined) than is *main* point.

His main point is that we should force *babies* to be born with -- and to suffer through the progression of -- fully preventable cases of HIV and AIDS, just so the mother will be subjected to a weighter measure of guilt for her "promiscuity."

This is about as powerful and overt a demonstration of the "pro-life" movement's utter hypocrisy as can be imagined. It has *never* been about "life" for them. It has *always* been about the power that right-wing fundamentalists reactionaries can exercise over family and social structures by controlling female sexuality. Period.

For this guy, and for the movement's leaders, babies that are born outside the parameters of their religious community are at first valuable only as albatrosses for those who have stepped out of line. Scarlet letters. "Consequences" for fornicators. The only way the babies could have any greater value in this context is if they have AIDS.

Abortion is dangerous because it disrupts this form of social control.

Contraception is dangerous because it disrupts this form of social control (the fact that it reduces the need for abortion is irrelevant, because the social control is already lost).

Preventing transmission of HIV to newborns is dangerous because it diminishes, even marginally, this form of social control.

There really can be little doubt that these people are the mirror image of the Afghan Taliban in every meaningful way. "God" help us should they ever manage take complete power in this country.

These guys are American Taliban. If a woman gets raped, it's because she didn't stay home with her burka, therefore she was asking for it.

And if a woman is going to go around asking to be raped by not being properly owned by her husband, then it's totally good that her child should have a terrible disease. But only because we're not allowed to stone her (yet).

These are sick, sick people, and there are a disturbing number of them. It's good to shine light on their crazy before they learn to moderate it and wind up being elected governor of Virginia or something.

You are not reading that entirely right -- he wants to force their babies to live with the consequences of their mother being raped or promiscuous. He is proposing to sacrifice the lives of the children in the hopes of teaching the mothers his brand of morality.

As 'innocent unborn lives' he wouldn't allow their abortion but once they are born it is okay by him for them to suffer a devastating illness if it will teach their mothers a lesson.

Moral of the Story: he is serious immoral.

This is true. They're easy targets and engender complacency in the left, lowering the bar of what's worthy of discussion. And they give the kooks someone to rally around.
Just as movies do really well when the Vatican bans them, fringe rightwingers' stock goes up when serious media outlets give them oxygen.

Let me get this straight. TPM is giving publicity to a guy who thinks that woman who are raped are sluts, and if they get HIV from their rapists they should pass it on to the babies they have as a result of the rape, so that the baby can serve as a living, breathing warning to all the other sluts out there who are in danger of being raped. As a result of this publicity, he will become a national figure who other wingnuts will rally around. And this will result in the growth of the wingnut movement, because of all the people out there who want to see these rape sluts and their HIV-infected babies punished for their sins. Do I have that right?

I can guarantee you there are far right wing Catholic (or evangelical) voters with proto-fascist tendencies that would agree with him. They read something like this, say 'Hey, I want to find out more about this guy!', like what they see and send him money. Unlikely that they would be reading TPM, but why take that chance? Is Michelle Bachman sane? God told her to run for Congress. I don't know. It just lowers the bar of public discourse to give such barbarity a forum. Sometimes more isn't better.

I would rather get all this filth out in the open, where people can see it and decide if those are the type of sentiments they agree with. And if a significant number of people decide that these views are not only coherent, but worthy of their support, then we are more fucked than we know, and nothing TPM does or doesn't do is going to make an iota of difference.

You know, there is actually a point being made with that gap head's analogy, and the title of this article completely misses it (and Josh misses it as well in his short editorial on the front page):

Obama's not crashing the plane into the ground. This seditionist is urging those constituents who can hear his actual message to crash the plane to the ground taking Obama with it. This is not a passive terrorist rant.

This is a call to self-sacrificing suicidal action. Exactly what action springs to mind that is at once self-sacrificingly suicidal and brings down Obama...do you think?

Obama's not crashing the plane into the ground.

That is somewhat belied by the words "He (Obama) is flying the U.S. Plane right into the ground at full speed." So perhaps Obama is one of the brave passengers trying to crash the plane before it reaches its destination and Schultheis is one of the terrorists.

I dunno, these people are too fucking crazy for me to figure out. I'm beginning to think that those Obama Re-education Camps wouldn't be such a bad thing after all, for a certain segment of the population.

Seriously...can't we do something about the gene pool? Is that why these freaks of society are so anti-choice? They want their spawn to grow up into little clones (I honestly typed "clowns" first...oops) of themselves so that they might someday take American Back (to the '50s or pre-Civil War)?

The Wikipedia definition of fascism is

" a political ideology that seeks to combine radical and authoritarian nationalism with a corporatist economic system and which is usually considered to be on the far right of the traditional left-right political spectrum"

That seems to fit the Republicans of 2009 pretty well.

Michelle Bachmann keeps saying outrageous things and gets re-elected to the House.

Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond were flat-out bigots, even long after their segregationist ceased to be publically acceptable. Yet they both won Senate re-elections within the last 15 years.

Point being - people may not like them, but they're still more comfortable with them than the lesser-known opposition.

I'm a little confused by the mixed metaphors. What is it we're supposed to do here exactly? The passengers of Flight 93 caused their plane to crash into the ground to prevent it from reaching its intended target in D.C. But he's telling us Obama is trying to crash "the U.S. Plane right into the ground at full speed." So maybe we should let him to prevent the plane from reaching its intended target? I'm a good patriotic Christian American, and I'm just not sure what to do!

I lived in Colorado Springs for four years in 90s, and it's impossible to overstate the level of pure, toxic right-wing insanity there. The local rag, the Gazette-Telegraph, was given to editorials calling on the city to follow what they called "The Houston Model" to get the stagnant economy moving, and a high school social studies teacher got in hot water when a tiny group of commie symps raised objections to his practice of having his classes consist of listening to Rush Limbaugh. Drive on the roads through the beautiful mountains surrounding the Springs and pull off at any given point, get out of your car, and four or five steps off the road you'll be knee-deep in beer cans and soda bottles. And of course, there's Jimmy Dobson. Wonderful landscape, saturated with the worst kind of Republican rot.

I live in the other polar opposite city in CO, Boulder. I just read a comment from someone saying that 'our government makes other conservative governments look progressive. We are being pulled over the edge by the right wing.' I tend to agree.

Our country was raped, plundered, pillaged, deconstructed, and demoralized during the GW Bush administration. No accountability leaves me unclear of what has stopped, what continues, or what will resume when the opportunity arises.

During the economic crisis and the health care debate I have learned more about what is going on in our government than I ever wanted to know. I was an idealist and an optimist... now my 'hope' is about gone.

The health care bills suck! They are not going to create competition or cut costs. They are going to give 40 million new 'forced' customers to the insurance companies, with the exception of the few who have the 'choice' to purchase the public option. They are a boon to the health insurance companies and the republicans. Their strategy works for them. Protest viciously and complain constantly, never giving an inch and even when in the minority they'll get pretty much everything they want
