Dick Cheney for president in 2012? His daughter Liz floated the idea on Fox News Sunday this morning -- though it's not clear that she was being serious.
Liz Cheney was a panelist on Fox News Sunday today. Near the end of the show, Chris Wallace showed video of President Obama slightly bowing to the emperor of Japan, and said the "internet is abuzz" over what Wallace referred to as "bowgate."
"By way of comparison, when Vice President Cheney met the emperor in 2007, no bow," Wallace said over video of Cheney greeting the Japanese emperor.
Bill Kristol, laughing, said that "Sarah Palin would never bow to the emperor of Japan. She wouldn't even curtsy to him."
Then Liz Cheney jumped in.
You could also look at the comparison and think, Cheney 2012.
Wallace and the panelists immediately all started talking over one another. Liz Cheney followed up with "That's all I'm gonna say" and "that's all."
We'll have video for you shortly.
Late Update: Here's the video.

The strongest spirits never need to thump their chests declaring how strong they are. That's why the mighty flames of a ranging fire are put off by water, an element that travels at the lowest levels but is the strongest elements.
Aloha spirit in the Pacific president is not comprehensible to neophytes and schoolyard bullies like the Cheneys.

Cheney running in 2012 would be a serious problem for Democrats, and anyone who doesn't realize that is naïve.
We already run the risk of Sarah Palin peaking too soon, and washing out early in the 2012 primaries as rank-and-file Republicans (if there are any left) realize with horror what they're dealing with in her. And let's not forget that Palin herself comes at the expense of a credible Huckabee campaign, with all its attendant Huckmentum. Even if Huck runs, it looks like he's going to be fighting with Palin and Lou Dobbs and God knows who else. Michele Bachmann? Liz Cheney?
For Democrats, it'd be like drinking a case of really great champagne all at once. A hell of a good time, but expensive, and we'd wake up in 2016 with a hangover. Our mission now should be to nurse the crazy. Make it last!

Bowing is a common greeting that everyone does to each other. Its a sign of mutual respect. Its the most polite greeting because in actuality a handshake is TOO MUCH skin contact for some Japanese.
The fact that an Emperor of Japan is willing to extend his hand to someone is ALREADY a sign of great respect and humility on his part. The least Obama could do is return the gesture by offering a bow.
But this is what I expect from a bunch of ignorant xenophobic monoculturalists on the Fox Opinion channel.

Yet another nonsensical justification for Obama's obsequiesness. Again, the president of the United States does not humble himself before monarchs. Every other head of state shook Akihito's hand, so the notion that shaking hands is too much skin for some Japanese is just plain nonsense.
Seriously, can you people every bring yourself to criticize this guy? When Obama gave DVDs to Gordon Brown I imagine the commenters here wrote "Well, he is really a big movie buff" and when Obama gave an iPod to the queen of England, I can imagine the sycophantic Obamabots here mentioned that the queen loves to listen to music while she jogs.

This is exactly the type of remark I expect from ethnocentrists that populate the American right and the denizens of Fox News.
The Emperor, and the Japanese in general, in a show of respect, have adapted themselves to Western culture by incorporating the handshake into their culture. Japanese don't shake hands with other Japanese. When they do, it feels crazy awkward.
The fact that Obama understands this and returns the gesture with a bow -- the traditional greeting -- shows the level of respect he holds towards the U.S. allies and partners, and I will GUARANTEE you will amplify his likability amongst the Japanese immensely.

Isn't just another example of how Obama is moving us away from the USA-centric thought that has worn out its welcome around the world? Let's accept the proposition that in the early days of the Nation it was important for us not to appear subservient to English monarchs. Let's also accept that, as a result, the "no bow/no curtsy" rule applied, particularly when the meetings are held here.
What does that have to do with this, 220 years later? Do we really want to assert the position that we don't give damn who the Pres is meeting on their own soil? If you're in Japan meeting the Japanese emperor, with the entire nation of Japan watching, is the emperor due no respect whatever? Does anyone really believe that, by bowing, which as already pointed out all Japanese do to anyone who is due respect, we are somehow ceding our stature or status?
This is exactly the kind of jingoistic thought process which the Nobel Committee honored Obama and the USA for throwing overboard.

Slight bow? Slight bow? Yeah, and Chris Farley was slightly fat.
And the President of the United States does not bow to monarchs, or anyone else for that matter. No other head of state bowed, and no president has ever bowed like this. The NY Times back in 1994 hammered Clinton because it looked like he almost bowed to this same guy.
http://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/19/weekinreview/the-world-the-president-s-inclination-no-it-wasn-t-a-bow-bow.html
To quote that piece:
"If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about?"
And it is frickin hilarious to read comments by people who unsuccessfully try to act as if this is not another embarrassing moment from a guy who does nothing but embarrass himself when he goes oversees. An iPod to the queen (evidently he didn't learn his lesson from the whole Gordon Brown DVD episode), bowing to a Saudi Prince, laughing it up with Hugo Chavez, standing silent while Daniel Ortega insults the former president of the United States, the list goes on. The guy is an absolute joke and the people here are sycophants who defend him no matter what.

Am I imagining it, or does Bill Krystol look like The Joker in this clip?
That snakeey smile just oozes ego and arrogance. No doubt, he would not have the class to bow (it is the same as a handshake in Japan, but more respectful and much healthier). It is no wonder the likes of Kristol can't fathom that cultural subtlety.
Obama can express humility, it is a worthy quality in him, and this just proves that improving US international relations matter much more to Obama than the delusion of US world military dominance. If the past administration had just a fraction of Obama's real class, they might have avoided the whole mess they created.
But, then, humility has never been a Republican strong point, nor a Kristol trait.

Hinting at running for president is a way of improving one's public image, and Liz Cheney's job is to improve the image of the former Vice President. There's no real story there.
The real story here is why Juan Williams didn't correct the ignorant people on the panel. In Asian countries, when you greet someone older than you, you bow. All this proves is that Dick Cheney is culturally illiterate and Obama is culturally literate.

Let's think about bowing for a second. Could it be that bowing means something different in Japanese than it does in English? Not unlike the way that Japanese words sound different and mean different things than English words? Doh. Bowing in Japan doesn't signal subservience (which seems to be the "Western" take on it - 'the leader of the free world doesn't bow before royalty' etc. - Bowing in Japan signals respect. There is nothing wrong with respect. Moreover, nothing diplomatic gets done in Japan without showing respect. Showing respect by bowing is - in Japan - the equivalent of bothering to learn enough Spanish to say "Buenos Dias" to the Prime Minister of Spain (Zapatero - McCain, take note). There is a world out there and it is good to recognize that fact.

Lets not forget the fact that in Japan, the bowing is mutual. You bow to each other.
Its not like bowing before a king who is sitting in a throne on a dais.

I'd love it. And when it becomes obviously inevitable that he's got it in the bag, he can appoint Liz to appoint herself as his Vice Presidential running mate.
Quick, someone get her a 500 watt Respectable Republican Chrome Vibrator and let's all hope that it would short-circuit, just before climax, and there she would lay: decked out in full Nazi regalia and ready for her closeup with the local coroner.

Japanese people, including me, are surprised to see that this "bowing" issue is in the news in America.
I saw the picture of Mr. Cheney standing VERY upright shaking hands with the Emperor. Unfortunately, that particular image conveys an impression of arrogance. However, in his defense, with that belly, perhaps Mr. Cheney risks a tumble if he bows.
I was taught how to bow in my elementary school:
15 degrees for a casual greeting;
30 degrees for business environments;
45 degrees for greeting an important person, an apology, or mourning;
90 degrees to greet the Emperor.
Even though we learned it, many Japanese people still cannot bow very well. Considering that, Mr. Obama, an American, bowed very nicely. Since I have seen the Emperor and Empress on the TV, and in photos, etc. many times, I can tell from their facial expression in the video that they're welcoming Mr. Obama with joy and warmth. Bowing and handshaking at the same time looks somewhat comical, but this scene shows "East meets West" and it is very heart-warming.
Some Americans complain the President is showing subordination. To us, it is quite the opposite. He seems to have a great power to disarm people around him with his inter-personal grace and diplomacy. He is the most popular American president ever in Japan, and during his short visit to Japan, he captured the hearts of many more Japanese people.
Even my 80-year-old mother said to me last night, "I'm gonna get some matcha (green tea-flavored) ice cream, too!" after she saw Mr. Obama on TV, who spoke about his first trip to Japan as a boy—“As a child, I was more focused on the matcha ice cream.”
IMHO, every US citizen should be very proud of having this great man as the President!

Thanks for sharing your insights into Japanese culture, shrewsbear!
On one hand, I'm impressed and pleased to think that that someone from Japan reads TPM.
On the other hand, I feel soooooooo embarrassed by the rude remarks of my right-wing countrymen. Please understand that this is not how most Americans feel. Despite all the horrors and warmongering of the Bush administration, the vast majority of Americans actually want to live peace. That is why we elected Obama.
Thanks again, and please accept my virtual but sincere 45 degree bow! ;-)

The internet is abuzz over bowgate? Haven't these right wingers been anywhere further from home than walmart? I've been to Japan and it's common courtesy to bow. Even getting on an elevator, a stranger might give you a small bow and you bow back. Not to do so would seem rude.

A Marriage Made In Heaven: "Cheney and Palin In 2012"
I am reminded of the young, pretty gold digger who only sought out the oldest, most infirm rich guys so she could clean up when they died. First, McCain, who headlines on several of those "dead pool" lists. Now Cheney, who quite possibly has already died and didn't get the memo. Leapfrogging into office by default, instead of merit, experience or competence. How Sarah.
