Lou Dobbs, who recently stepped away from his show at CNN after nearly 30 years at the cable news network, stopped by the Daily Show last night. When Jon Stewart compared the severance pay in Dobbs' contract to a government subsidy, Dobbs joked, "It's more of a bailout."

When Stewart told Dobbs his views are "abhorrent and wrong," the anti-immigration host said "I deeply appreciate that."

H.L. Mencken, Mark Twain, Jonathan Swift, Stewart & Colbert. No question that they all belong in the same list.

Future generations will shake their heads in disbelief when they find old newspaper articles about Bush and Palin amongst the post-apocalyptic wreckage... but if they manage to find any intact "Daily Show" vids, they might get a good laugh or two.

I put them with Will Rogers as well -- who knew this was a Golden Age for wry, sarcastic political commentary?

Jon is a great interviewer. And NOBODY in the press asks tough followups and challenges the interviewee like he does. Sadly, he's one of the ebst "journalists" in the country.

Finally, after all these years, somebody challenges Dobbs and his bald-faced lies.

I would disagree with your last sentence. As Adam mentions below, Stewart didn't challenge him on the birther nonsense; aside from the amusing mariachi intro, didn't really challenge him on the immigration nonsense; and most significantly, didn't challenge him on the idiotic statement about Obama taking the country in a "hard-left" direction, and relating that to the Bushies taking the country "hard right."

Nothing that Obama has done, or even proposed doing, has been anywhere close to "hard-left." Real leftist health reform would have been a single-payer system, which Obama has said he supports, but will not propose. Instead, we will (hopefully) get a watered-down public option, which states can opt-out of, and a lot of restrictions on coverage that may or may not impact people negatively. It's a start, but it's hardly even socialism of the European variety.

Yes, I agree but he missed challenging Dobbs as on of the fringe for his birther conspiracy against President Obama.

So, in Part 1, Dobbs says that CNN wants to practice "middle of the road" or "neutral" journalism (could that even be called "objective" journalism?), as opposed to the "advocacy journalism" that Dobbs wants to continue to do (which, by the way used to be called "yellow journalism") and Stewart mocks it as if it's crazy talk? What's that all about?

If "middle of the road" means to simply split the difference and make a "he said she said" out of every issue, it is not, in fact, objective in any sense. At some point, actual facts and merits of arguments need to be considered and acted upon in determining what and how to cover.

Good point, plus there is the fact that Dobbs says that Obama needs to govern from the center, which he is in fact already doing. Dobbs is far to the right of center, yet he portrays himself as a middle-of-the-roader, and portrays everyone who disagrees with him as an extremist. Look in the mirror, Lou.

When one is either on the right fringe, or far to the left, the center looks extreme. That's why Dobbs doesn't understand Obama.

Although I love Jon and the daily show with a passion normally reserved for religious idols and hard core pornography, I was a bit disappointed he didn't take Dobbs to task for the whole 'birther' BS. It would have been a perfect time to call him on this type of fear mongering. Why didn't this happen?

I would say it didn't happen because it is nonsense and the quicker we get off that stupid notion once and for all, the better. No need to feed the trolls.

I agree. Also, it is only a half hour show despite the internet version. With all that Dobbs has said in the past, I'm sure Jon had a hard time deciding exactly what would be the best interview route. He probably decided on the most current and realistic road.

TeeVee is an amalgam of Art and Craft -- that's why I like Olbermann, no matter what. He's professionalism is clearly evident, despite his occasional annoying tangents and self-indulgence. Try doing it, and it becomes clear how hard it truly is to pull off, night after night.

I like Olbermann, but don't put him in the same class as Stewart. His voices and rants can get on my nerves. Love Maddow. Both are a little too left for me, but because I'm not a FOX Zombie I am well aware of the fact that I can form my own opinions.

I find it hilarious as Dobbs tries to redefine himself over and over in this interview and Stewart shoots him down over and over, with nothing more than logic, facts and common sense.

For Dobbs - advocating for the military industrial complex is the middle of the road and advocating for healthcare for the soldier running up Omaha beach is taking a hard turn to the left.

Actually, the twits on her FB page said that Sarah would eat him alive. I honestly don't think Jon could dumb himself down enough to even carry on a polite conversation with her, much less a real interview.

Pretty disappointing Jon didn't take Dobbs apart on the "hard left/hard right" comparison. It's absolutely absurd to say that there are those on the left that match up to the lunatics on the right.

I didn't manage to watch the whole thing. Not because of Jon, but hearing Dobbs' crap made me sick.
After a few minutes I asked myself: do I really need this? And the answer was no.
I've gotten in the habit of not watching the guest segment when a politician or a pundit is on. The newspapers and blogs are already full of these clowns. I know the phony arguments they peddle. I need some fun, and a fake debate isn't funny.

They want to do "middle of the road" journalism? Whatever happened to "investigative journalism"? Or has that gone by the wayside? What ever happened to, "Just the facts mam"? What is going on? I don't want any half-ass hare-brained opinions, I want news dammit!!

The problem is that the media are businesses that need big numbers, and they cannot draw big numbers with intellectually stimulating programming in today's American society. Our citizens don't like to be challenged with having to think. Fox has the formula and you can see it working; they appeal to the lowest common denominator and the success they have is demonstrated by the misspelled signs their audience carry.

That is the most sublime 1/2 hr of television I have ever seen. Jon Stewart is priceless beyond measure. What on earth would we do without him? His measured, controlled, and reasoned response to Dobbs was almost archetype. Here you saw, up close and personal, the Great Divide. Make of it what you will.

I was taught that ours is a constitutional republic based on a representative democracy. At one point in this discussion Dobbs called it a constitutional republic and Stewart called it a representative democracy as if those were two opposing ideas. Both men are more reasonable (I would argue Dobbs is much less reasonable than Stewart) than most of the assholes in media these days, yet they can't agree on a basic definition of the nature of our country! What lightiris calls the Great Divide is more like the Final Chasm. And holograrr, you'll likely know "news" when you see it; it'll agree with your world view.

John Stewart is entirely wrong in his statement that people for limited government really want government limited to Republicans. He really is off the mark. The problem is that the Democratic Party has made a dramatic shift to the far left, or better yet, the more radical side of it has taken the forefront. People don't want handouts, they don't want higher taxes to fund programs that they feel reward irresponsibility, they don't want people to feel entitled to handouts, they don't like their Presidents bowing and apologizing all around the world and they certainly don't like being called names by their representatives. That isn't even the tip of the iceberg but it's a start.

I agree with you on most parts, however, I feel Stewart was right by saying that people want government limited to Republicans. Check the 2nd video again around the 2:50 mark. They refer to the idea that Democrats equate winning an election to winning a nation. Dobbs attempts to exonerate Republicans from this. For 8 years they've conducted policy as if "all" Americans believed in it, while a great number of critics existed. Do they want to pretend that didn't happen? Now that Democrats are in power, they want to say, "some people aren't happy with the policies, so obviously it's tyranny?" It's no different than the left-wingers who held up "Bush-as-Hitler" signs during his tenure. These Tea-baggers who are holding up Nazi signs at protests are the one's who Stewart is referring too.

Not only has the administration not taken any stance against the second amendment, but they've actually enabled it during the Credit Card Owners Bill of Rights... Allowing guns in national parks? How can any right winger say that this administration is anti-gun rights? It's complete idiocy.

Interesting that Mr. Dobbs toned down his views and rhetoric to such a remarkable extent on Stewart's show. The Dobbs in this interview bears little resemblance to the Dobbs we saw on CNN, or the Dobbs we can hear on the radio daily.

Why? Lou is not an idiot. He knows he can't get away with that stuff with Jon Stewart sitting across the table.
