Think Progress catches Fox News today again using old footage to make crowds look bigger than they were, this time to show all the people that are showing up for Sarah Palin's book tour.
During a short segment about Palin "drawing crowds" on the tour, Fox played several clips that are obviously from rallies on the campaign trail last year. While the clips played, host Gregg Jarrett said, "These are some of the pictures just coming in to us. ... There's a crowd of folks."
Watch:
To be fair, this could have been an honest mistake of the wrong footage playing at the wrong time.
But it's notable when just last week, Jon Stewart caught Fox News personality Sean Hannity using footage from the 9/12 rally in order to show the "huge crowds" at the much less-attended Capitol Hill tea party this month. Hannity then issued an on-air apology to Stewart.
It's also worth nothing that while Hannity counts as one of Fox's opinion programmers, Jarrett is one of their straight news guys.
Fox could not be immediately reached for comment.

My guess is next they'll splice in some footage of Anita Bryant as a Palin stand-in.

A picture of Anita Bryant selling an orange, and claim it's the Palin book that Limbaugh read, perhaps? Then splice in the picture of Rush extolling what a great source it is for policy.

You just don't get it:
The film was just coming in from their library of "Pump Up the Crowd" stock footage.
That's not dishonest, so long as they show the library card.

Inadvertent error?
ROTFL
Seriously - that was believable the first 50 or so times they said it. But it's about as believable as the old pervert who continually *inadvertently* keeps rubbing up against young ladies on the subway.
Fox News isn't going to stop "inadvertently" distorting the truth until they get kicked in the nuts, good and hard, several times

It's obvious that Jake Tapper was simply and honestly trying to find out the difference between "media organization" and "news organization," because he obviously doesn't know, and that Gibbs was unfairly refusing to explain the difference.

You know the response will be it was an "inadvertent error" on the part of some producer or editor.
Folks, television editing, even in the digital age isn't something where this kind of "error" is really possible without malice aforethought.
Someplace there is footage of Palin at a rally. Elsewhere there is footage of Palin at a book signing and part of that footage is absolutely certainly shots of the people on hand for the event.
No way Fox can explain that they jumped OUT of the file of footage from the book signing and just HAPPENED to put in some digits from an event a year ago.
And as I have said several times, I wish Media Matters would do some analysis on a similar situation which is all to common at FOX....listing a Republican goofball with a (D) in their Chryron on-screen ID when they have done something wrong, like getting caught wearing diapers, committing adultery or misusing campaign funds.
The study should examine how many times this kind of "inadvertent error" happened when a Republican was given a D and how many times an errant D was mistakenly labeled with an R. My guess is the numbers on each side are going to be wildly different.
Fox is deliberately distorting reality to favor right wing causes and they do it over and over and whenever they get caught in a lie, they either ignore the problem and repeat the lie, or claim it was some sort of error.
Yeah Right!!!!

You are correct. The editor of the piece would have to got to he trouble of pulling up the old footage, loading into the editor, cutting the current footage and inserting the older footage. That kind of thing does not happen "inadvertently" any more than a picture of Hitler running with Obama's name underneath would.

Right now while the rest of the news media is circling the wagons to protect their "sister organization" against the big bad White House, there seem to be only two people willing to call things as they are: Jon Stewart and Anita Dunn.
I hope Jon Stewart does another segment on this one. As for Anita Dunn, I'm hoping and praying someone else in the White House Communications Office will take up the mantle and keep the pressure on Fox News.
Sometimes there's a lot of value in stating the obvious and calling a spade a spade.

"... an honest mistake... " ? I find it hard to believe a news organization with it's reputation on the line would make a mistake like this so soon after being caught red handed. More likely the producers "honestly" think we are stupid enough to continue to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I think giving them this benefit just proves their suspicions of us are correct.

Why don't they just show a crowd of Special Olympics contestants as the "so called huge crowd"? It would be more believable. Or a KKK rally. Or a huge pile of feces with hats. Or hydrocephalus headed mongoloids. OK that would be redundant. Or closeted homosexual Right Wing Republican Politicians in airport bathrooms noshing on choad.

"To be fair, this could have been an honest mistake"
I have been a Post Production professional for 20 years, and things like this don't happen by mistake. Someone at FOX, at whatever level, made a decision to use this footage knowing it was not of her book signing. If FOX is well managed, and I suspect that it is given that it is one of the higher rated cable networks, the decision was made by someone authorized to make that kind of decision, either a Supervising or Executive Producer.

It is deliberate; part of an ongoing effort to desensitize us to when news is faked. They will keep using old footage until it isn't news anymore, and then the Republican crowds that turn out for the 2010 and 2012 elections will equal the biggest crowds that any Republican has ever drawn; they may even equal the biggest crowds any Democrat has ever drawn. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of Obama 2008 campaign events.

What we can do is call them on it. Just like you are doing now. Keep calling them on it. Eventually, hopefully, it will become part of the general public understanding that Fox News is a dishonest service. It won't change the minds of the complete morons, but there are more reasonable people who will at least understand that Fox ain't "all that" afterall.
