Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Cheney and founder of the Keep America Safe PAC, claimed on Fox News last night that holding terrorism trials in New York "endangers the United States" and brings the country "back to a pre-9/11 mentality."

"This demonstrates conclusively that we are going back to a pre-9/11 mentality," she said.

She also hinted that civilian trials would lead to more terrorist attacks.

"We know where that path leads," she said. "If an enemy is waging war against you and you just issue indictments, then you can't prevail in those circumstances."

Video after the jump.

Cheney's PAC is encouraging supporters to attend a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing tomorrow at which Attorney General Eric Holder, who announced the decision to try five 9/11 suspects in New York, will testify.

So why in the world didn't her father and Bubble-Boy just authorize our soldiers to kill anyone who was taken prisoner? Wouldn't that have been the best illustration of a "post 9-11" mind-set? Instead the Bushies tried to set up this system of military commissions that has been full of consitutional problems. I realize that by appearing on Fox News programs, Mz. Cheney avoids any difficult questions, but why doesn't someone ask her what her solution is and whether her solution will avoid problems with the United States Supreme Court.

Ah, the pre-9/11 mentality. Isn't that the one where we had laws and stuff? When our government wasn't in the hands of the most lawless clique to ever hit the country?

I wonder if they'll have developed a shrill meter capable of measuring her histrionics by the time her Dad's in the docket.

Here's your white feather, Ms. Cheney. You've just capitulated to the terrorists.

Why does anyone listen to this person? What has this person done to warrant the respect she gets? Leave up to a Cheney to bring the crazy!

I am still confused why TPM follows people like Liz around and posts anytime they say something crazy. You can spend mountains of internet ink on these WATB's, but for what purpose?

Waste of resources.

Because it is Talking Points Memo, i.e. it discusses the "talking points" of Repuglicans and their evil overloads.

I understand what you're getting at here, but even their own mission statement says "The site specializes in original reporting on government and politics and offers breaking news coverage, investigative reporting, high profile guest bloggers and a book club."

It seems that Media Matters already has filled the niche of "some crazy person said some crazy thing on the teevee", so I'm confused why TPM's front page has become increasingly more filled with this crap.

Last I checked, Liz Cheney isn't an elected official, and has no influence on US politics other than appearing on the same shows that Orly Taitz, Chuck Norris and James Woods appears on.

This is celebrity gossip at best, and a desperate cry for traffic at worst.

TPM has some great reporting, and I hate to see it clogged by this kind of immaterial nonsense.

I agree with you that TPM is becoming more and more like HuffPo. I guess Josh has mouths to feed.

I agree with you. Enough Liz Fucking Cheney already. But TPM is nowhere near the level of dreck that you get on Fluff Post. Jesus, it's the People Magazine of politics. I go there when I need news on Lindsay Lohan, Rosie O'donell's breakup, or scantily clothed red carpet appearances.

HuffPo is more like Murdoch's Sun, complete with nudie snaps and non-political gossip.

What the hell is Ms. Cheney's expertise in this matter? Or any other? Why is anyone, let alone TPM, paying any attention to her? She is the Orly Taitz of national security, a shrill shill.

Journalistic laziness, or interweb traffic.

What does anyone get out of these stories other than "wow, some crazy lady said something predictably crazy"?

I thought the GOP was supposed to be the Daddy Party? When did they turn into a bunch of cowardly nancys? Do they really think so little of America that they have no faith in the civilian justice system and security apparatus?

Seriously, can you imagine if the positions were turned and it was the Democrats voicing concerns about a Republican administration bringing terrorists into the US to stand trial? Fox News would be posting pictures of Harry Reid in a skirt.

Is she suggesting the DOJ should skip right over the indictment of her father, Do Not Pass Go, and proceed directly to his incarceration for war crimes?

Saw the words "Liz Cheney" and "rails" and, for a second, my heartrate increased...Would I soon read the words "feathers" and "tar"???
Uh...Usual Darth spawn stuff...I'd button up and save it for the consulting fee or the Cheney (snicker!) presidential run, honey.

Why are the Republicans in general and most interestingly Ms. Cheney in particular so afraid of 9/11 trials? New Yorkers were not afraid of them before the Republicans started stoking the fear fires. We have had terrorist trials before without batting an eyelash. They are afraid of the rule of law. They are afraid of what the courts might say about torture. And they are afraid that Daddy Cheney may join KSM in jail.

I wish that were true, Cheryl. But I think the better metaphor is cancer. You can't just ignore it. You have to attack it. With everything you've got.

She's as much of a bully as her old man, and - as with all bullies - a coward to boot. "Fear AlQaeda, quake before its denizens, be very afraid of people in shackles, we're a fearful country, we cannot take risks," seems the battle crying of the right. Where did these whimps get their weenie pills? Uncle Dick never served, so I guess he doesn't know what testicles are for. Some people say liz has bigger than her dad, but not with this fear of standing up for our system. Cowards, the whole lot of them. Why won't the Dems call them out?

Please give Josh Marshall a break. Liz Cheney, bearing credentials from nowhere about nothing, is nevertheless the latest iteration of mindless spokesmanship for a party whose conservative base is intolerant of political dissent and cogent argument. While it is true that most of what she has to say is yackety-yack (and parroted by her interviewer Hannity), she does have a faux reasonableness about her, and she possesses the knack of tapping into Americans' fear of jihad, invasion and infestation. She has a bad habit in this interview and elsewhere of equating terrorist organizers with viruses or multi-drug resistant organisms, for which we should fear bodily contact should they be "let loose." Of course this mindset is condescending of the listening public, denies the nation closure on the 9/11 tragedy (the gift that keeps on giving to the GOP right)and cheapens real political discourse, but this is where the GOP is trying to position itself and Josh has a obligation to report it.
