McConnell: Americans Don't Even Want Health Care Reform To Pass -- And I'll Help Delay It

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Fox News Sunday today that a majority of Americans don't want the Democrats' health care reform plan to pass -- and that if Democrats go forward with reform, they'll be ignoring "the opinion of the American population."

And McConnell said he plans to delay the bill with lots of amendments on the Senate floor.

The American people are overwhelmingly telling us, don't pass it. It'll be up to whether the Democratic majority wants to listen to the American people or whether they want to pass this anyway, just to basically ignore the opinion of the American population.

Regardless, McConnell said health care reform won't leave the Senate anytime soon, suggesting that he'll "delay the process to allow everyone to fully understand what is in the bill."

This will be on the floor for quite a long time. I think it ought to be on the floor at least as long as it's been in Harry Reid's office.

McConnell also said that it would be "very difficult to pass a bill that, in effect, either directly or indirectly provided taxpayer money to pay for abortions," suggesting the Democrats don't have 60 votes in the Senate for such a bill.

The Senate minority leader also tried to downplay apparent schisms in the Republican Party, perhaps best illustrated by the GOP civil war in the special NY-23 congressional election, in which the moderate Republican nominee dropped out and backed her Democratic opponent after a number of prominent national Republicans chose to endorse a Conservative Party candidate instead of a moderate Republican.

The division represents "no threat at all," McConnell said, adding that he sees "enormous enthusiasm" among a variety of candidates because "people believe that getting the Republican nomination means a good chance of winning."

And Sarah Palin, who seems to be on just about everyone's mind today with her book release coming this week?

"As big a following as she's got, you bet she's got a future," McConnell said.

Too bad. That's what the majority of Americans want, seeing as we understand that abortions are legal and that church should stay in the church building.

Look, I am a Republican and I want Health Insurance reform. Not that I need it. I have medical insurance from my retirement and Medicare. but I have kids and grandkids coming up and it bugs me that the older population seems to be using up so much of the health care dollars. The system that was put in place a couple of years ago means that I do not even have to send bills to my retirement medical insurance because medicare payments are so generous. I could just bask in that fact but alas, I worry about us Seniors using up all the health care dollars and children and younger adults being squeezed out of medical coverage. Seems inequitable to me. The entire time I worked I counted on Medicare payments to be supplemented by my private retirement insurance. Now, there is no billing of my private plan due to such generous Medicare payments to my HMO. For me, the need for the change is an equity issue. If older people are indigent and need the extra, that is different. But lets worry about insuring children and families as well as senior citizens.

Why extrapolate your personal experience with Medicare to the entire US population ? Many may not share your experience or be in your position. The facts on the ground are that the Bush tax cuts plus the extravagant wars we are waging around the world would take care of reform if they were canceled. We can let go of our empire and focus our energies on the welfare of the middle class. There might then be a chance for a decent life for the majority of Americans.

Republicans don't look at polls when they claim to know the "will of the American people." They say whatever they want regardless of polls. Just look at Bush--he twisted the knife into this country's gut while we were screaming for his head. No, McConnell and the party of vicious fucks don't listen to us. They listen to them that holds the money.

I challenge anyone here to cite one poll, just one, concluding that a majority of Americans support having their taxpayer dollars fund abortion.

And the GOP needn't plan to do anything. The Democratic Party is doing nicely bringing down the bill because of abortion all by itself. I laugh every time I read a news story about Dems signing letters indicating they will not vote for a bill with the Stupak Amendment (everyone here knows they are liars) which is then inevitably followed by a proclamation from pro-life Dems, and Senate Dems, stating they will not vote for a bill that doesn't have that amendment. Which is why it is completely absurd for people to keep mentioning a "civil war" in the Republican Party because a woman farther to the left than a huge portion of the Democratic caucus dropped out of a House race in NY.
As for McConnell's statement that the majority of American's don't want Obamacare, I notice the above piece doesn't challenge that assertion, because the author knows it to be true. http://www.pollster.com/polls/us/healthplan.php

I can't wait to laugh and gloat when Senate Dems and Lieberman filibuster into the ground a bill devised by their own caucus. A day doesn't go by without a Moderate Dem stating he won't vote for cloture if the abortion restrictions aren't included. The chances of Obamacare passing are about the same as the odds unemployment won't surpass 1982 levels.

You're the one saying we're wrong, so the burden of proof is on you. Show us that poll, please. We're all waiting with much excitement.

The rest of your post is Rethuglican trolling for the most part, so it's not worth the time you took to type it. But I will say one other thing that either you're too dense to get, or you're just trying to twist to support yourself. McConnell is a Republican. He WANTS people to think that America doesn't want HCR to pass, dear. What good would challenging your one little poll do for him?

When all you watch is Fox "News" - you tend to believe that there are more people on your side than there actually are. Besides - don't you know how much people like paying twice as much for healthcare as all the other western democracies? It's the thrill of knowing that you might get dropped from coverage as soon as you get sick that makes America strong.

That's good. Keep making these proud statements, you and McConnell and Boehner and the like, not only about how you're going to screw America's chance at long-overdue health care reform, but how christianists and white males are so staunchly against the right of an American woman to her reproductive freedom. Keep bragging about it.

Not only will you "laugh" your racist, xenophobic and misogynistic political party right down the shitter, but individually, your wives and girlfriends are going to decide they've had enough of your blowharded oppression, and pull a serious Lysistrata on your hairless white asses.

So apparently you don't care if people can't get health insurance because of pre-existing conditions or have to declare bankruptcies because of health care bills they can't pay or their health insurance company cancels their policy when they try to use it. Apparently you are comfortable with the status quo and therefore don't want any change. Apparently you believe that you will never lose your health insurance. In short, you got ours and you don't care for the millions of your fellow Americans who aren't covered by health insurance. Nice attitude, but one that was defeated by about 10 million votes last year.

Problem is, if the Republicans prevent serious HCR from passing, the Dems will be the ones who get blames. McConnell knows that. He and Boehner and the rest of their ilk know that if the Dems don't pass HCR, they may very well re-take the House next year and possibly even the Senate as well. So of course they're going to obstruct and offer nothing. The burden is on the Dems to get this done.

Abortion is a hot button issue.
Why must we as a society, knowingly embrace the Dark Ages?
Semen ejaculated from the penis into the vagina, swims to attach itself to an egg, the egg is fertilized by the seed, and pregnancy occurs. Human beings have sex. Sex is not illegal. Science has delivered a number of contraceptive devices and methods that can prevent pregnancy but none are 100% effective, except, of course, for abstinence. Once again, Human beings have sex. When a woman has an unplanned pregnancy, she most likely, finds herself in a predicament, she is given a choice (for now), she can bring a child into the world and give up or postpone career / personal plans, or she can continue with the life plans she's made for herself, and legally end the pregnancy. The individual circumstances, such as being in a committed relationship, and an astronomical number of other factors, would contribute to the decision making process. I'm not a woman but I'll bet that this is an emotionally, spiritually and physically difficult decision.
The Stupak amendment will do one of three things,
#1. It will make the availability of legal abortion, to the average Jane, almost impossible. The wealthy Jane will most likely be okay.
#2. It will end the current fight to bring affordable, universal health care to the citizens of America.
#3. It will inspire people to revolt against a crippling political and religious ideology, and force their representatives to support a single payer system, or an extremely robust public option that is available to all.

It's unfortunate that a significant number of people can't see, that the FOR PROFIT Health care system we have right now, benefits by raising premiums AND denying coverage, and thus, promoting sickness, and the concentration of wealth.

I'm disappointed that someone could laugh and gloat, while a greedy, self fulfilling industry, succeeds in this 'concentration of wealth society' and at the same time, impoverishes the American people.

I'm glad we decide policy based on push-polling rather than elections. It's hard to even remember why we spend billions on campaigns. And voting is such a hassle. Wouldn't it just be easier to out-source the whole operation to Frank Luntz? That way we'd know exactly what America is thinking from second to second and could make long-term plans accordingly.

All of this is because the democrats can't agree to set a limited time for debate and vote for cloture.

Insurance for RNC employees has included abortion for the last 18 years.

Even after their sudden shock and awe, "the Republican National Committee will still indirectly subsidize abortions, every time it writes a check to Cigna.

And if the RNC disagrees with this reasoning, and believes the issue is "settled," then the party has rejected the reasoning of the Stupak amendment at a fundamental level."
http://
www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/143936/hypocrisy_watch:_rnc_insurance_plan_has_covered_abortions_for_18_years/

It deeply troubles me that even in the face of factual evidence to the contrary Gopers keep screaming that the sky is falling. They pretend to speak for "the American People" cleverly leaving out the word majority. When they do pretend to speak for the majority, they speak about fictitious bills. There is no such thing as Obamacare. It has all been done in Congress to this point. There's the problem. If you want something screwed up, send it to "committee." Congress is the most inept committee on Earth! What the American people need and WANT is a good bill with universal, fair coverage and significant cost containment. They know how to do it. They know it is the right thing to do and yet we get the church lobbyists, Big Insurance blackmail and a timid Democratic majority. I think many Dem's don't like the way this is looking because real reform is being sold out to the highest bidder. I am happy with the progress made so far but am concerned that such threats from the right are actually listened to by not only the fux nuse crud but those who aren't paying attention. If Repukes actually had the majority of the people we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

You cited one of the polls that even by pollster.com (the site that has the composite about HCR Yes/No) has a net conservative house effect. Add the house effect to the margin of error for any Rasmussen poll and you'll understand why they're not exactly great: the results for your precious Rasmussen poll end up within the margin of error and thus not a good predictor of public opinion.

Come back when you have real math, not just "the math", Karl.

Seeing the forest and big picture !!

To date, out of the earmarked $787bn in stimulus package , roughly $155bn dollars, not sufficient to reverse the trend of jobless rate, have been doled out. But, away from job saving and creation, GDP growth etc, the added value on the stock market alone might stay at roughly $1trillion, which could help us see the forest in light of conclusion of the historic health care and sustainable energy act.

As always, focusing exclusively on up-front cost and subtracting its added value from equation, we will more likely be trapped in a small cage.

The bottom line is that Wall Street likes the status quo on health care. Nothing beings Wall Street more joy than seeing family after family sell their house so that Bill Mc Guire can make his $100 million dollar annual salary. Nothing gives health care stockholders more pleasure than nailing sick people to Blue Crosses and fleecing them of every penny they ever saved.

LIEberman and 40 Republicans will kill health care reform and Harry Reid is too chicken to stand up to them. There will be no health care bill passed and i lay the blame on the President and the Democratic congressional leadership because they traded away an orchard to the GOP and they didn't even get a single rotted apple back in return. But then, that is what Wall Street wanted.

Wall Street made it clear. Stockholders are more important than sick people. There will be no health care legislation passed. Nothing give the health care stockholders more pleasure than seeing sick people nailed on a Blue Cross and fleeced of every penny they ever saved. And they have bought the 41 votes they need for a filibuster, Lieberman and the 40 Republicans.

Thanks to the bungling done by the President and the Democratic Congressional leadership, we will have to wait another 20 years before we try to fix this mess. Even then it will fail again. Wall Street always gets what it wants.

The health insurance companies will spend millions in the next few weeks to stop health care reform. They will pull out all the heavy guns(money and influence) to put the breaks on HCR. The republican greed and obsession for power, knows no bounds. They will absolutely pimp out the American People(because they have such a low opinion of the American population in general) to get that power. They have absolutely no memory of more than ten months ago. They were right in there with Bush, but deny it, without batting an eye. I panic when I think that the Republicans might take the congress and White House back because of the lies that they are caught in now, can you imagine, if they were in political power? The American People seem to be so easily duped by propaganda, especially that put out by the health insurance companies and pharma. The republican party doesn't want centrists, moderates, liberals, humanitarians, women or gays to join their party, but wants them to vote for them. Unbelievable to me how they are getting the support that they are getting. If we don't have a voice or voices in Washington, why not just hand over power to the brawl mentality of the tea baggers and wing nuts? Our group doesn't seem to be able to govern, even though, they are in the majority. We are in a weak position because of weak kneed democrats.
