During her interview with Sean Hannity that aired last night, Sarah Palin made an interesting declaration: That we need to prevent a nuclear Iran by cracking down on "Iraq."
Hannity asked what can be done to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. In her response, Palin seemed to be confused between Iraq and Iran:
"We have allies who are as concerned about Ahmadinejad's actions as we are. We need to be working closer with France, and with Britain, and start, not just considering, but seriously taking steps towards the sanctions that we hear all about but we never see any actions towards, though.
"Cutting off the imports into Iraq, of their refined petroleum products. They're reliant -- 40 to 45 percent of their energy supply is reliant on those imports. We have some control over there.
"And some of the beneficial international monetary deals that Iraq benefits from -- we can start implementing some sanctions there and start really shaking things up, and telling Ahmadinejad, nobody is going to stand for this."

Well, no, not really. This is a "57 states" kind of gaffe. She just said "Iraq" when she meant to say "Iran." There's no there there.
We should ignore this kind of junk and focus on the fact that her overall argument is bullshit. Specifically, this line:
They're reliant -- 40 to 45 percent of their energy supply is reliant on those imports. We have some control over there.
The first part is correct; Iran is partially reliant on imported refined petroleum. The second part, that we Americans (who account for basically none of those imports) somehow "have some control" over that, is ridiculous.
The other two paragraphs are nearly as bad. The idea that no sanctions ever happen is downright silly considering Ahmadinejad had to repress his populace to keep his job because of the economic damage sanctions have done already. And of course we've had much more progress getting what we want from Iran since we stopped trying to conduct John Wayne diplomacy. As for the "beneficial international monetary deals," I would have loved to hear her response to the follow up question: "could you describe those deals?"
Anyway, point is, everything she says is either stupid or a lie. We should focus on that rather than obvious word slips that everyone makes.

You are assuming that she really knows the difference. She doesn't know much of anything and I doubt that she has any clear understanding of this at all; just talking points as others have said.
Do you really think she could find Iraq on a map? This is a person who can't name our country's national newspapers. Temper your "fairness" with wariness.

I agree with your overall point that compared to most everything, this is trivial. You make the same kind of mistakes and need some slack sometime? I sure do. All too often.
But your technical point that she has solid grounding in what is Iran and what is Iraq is speculation on your part. Did you *hear* her answer in the campaign as to what the Vice President does? Veep is in charge of Congress and gets in there and really works with them a lot?
You are *projecting.* It's trivial in part, but I have NO REASON to think she's knows anything about Iran or Iraq. None.

Palin's Proposal:
1. Talk to the people she said on the campaign trail don't matter to our policy (and whom Obama is already working with and has been for some time)
2. Threaten the wrong country with sanctions on products we don't ship to them (yes, Iran needs refined gas/petrochemicals, but not from us)
3. Somehow make the sanctions work with no input from the Chinese or Russians, who do sell those products to Iran and have vetoes on the Security Council
If anyone who we think of as a serious candidate said anything this stupid they'd be slaughtered by the media. It is a measure of Palin's irrelevance to anything that it is just more background noise to most people.

In Palin's defense, it's pretty clear that she did mean "Iran" when she meant "Iraq", since Iran does import about 40% of its gasoline, primarily due to refinery underproduction. That said, Gasoline isn't energy supply, it's one facet of the Iranian energy supply, and one which can be easily corrected were it suddenly become more expensive to import Gasoline than it is to ship it out for refining.
Nor is her sudden discovery of these sanctions all that impressive - seeing how she probably learned of htem when they were mentioned by then Candidate Obama when he was wiping the floor with McCain during the October presidential debate:
“If we can prevent them from importing the gasoline that they need, and the refined petroleum products, that starts changing their cost-benefit analysis,” Mr. Obama said at the time. “That starts putting the squeeze on them.”

I declare, it's some Lifetime thing or spunky-female movie that exists in the brains of some of these Palinites like a tumor. The more batty and cutesy and goggle-eyed Palin gets, the more she makes those little click noises and winks, the more they see "lookit her gettin' right up there and sayin' that! Ain't she fulla sass!"
They've got some plot line in their heads where the seemingly stupid ('cause she's hot, see?) heroine tricks all the old dogs with her out-of-the-box thinking and spunky female spunkiness. And wins some big victory, after which everyone dances ecstatically to disco music while balloons fall from the ceiling. I mean, I've seen lots of movies end that way--who says it can't happen in real life? Isn't TV real life, anyway?

Y'know, up until the past few days I would've disagreed with you. She couldn't run as a Republican. Not only has she burned too many bridges, but the majority doesn't like her. She can't run as an Independent for obvious reasons (although her Facebookies think that's a great idea). Her only option would be Conservative. No matter what she may run as, it will be a sure win for the Democrats. She could run alongside Abraham Lincoln and screw it up.
The best part? Her campaign rallies. Movie worthy mayhem. Sadly, I think it's all a pipe dream. She's making too much money being a civilian idiot, why would she jeopardize that to become a Presidential idiot? I also can't believe that even she is too dumb to not realize she would ensure another 4 years for Pres. Obama.

In my child's school a 75% is a D. A slip of the tongue does happen, as we have seen with so many politicians. Often it is clear what is meant, and Palin probably did mean Iran. Still, every time she opens her mouth she has a "slip of the tongue". Occasional is one thing. Nearly all of the time is another.

I would love to see if she actually knows the meaning of the word "rogue" in my dictionary it reads:
1. a dishonest, knavish person; scoundrel.
2. a playfully mischievous person; scamp: The youngest boys are little rogues.
3. a tramp or vagabond.
4. a rogue elephant or other animal of similar disposition.
5. Biology. a usually inferior organism, esp. a plant, varying markedly from the normal.
That DOES describe her.

And none of this makes a bit of difference to her supporters. The Main stream media doesn't give a shit either. She could sail right on through the nomination process, confusing facts, lying, confusing this dictator with that ally right through to the Presidential Debates and the Main Stream Media wouldn't bat an eye. Obama could crush her in a debate, but the media would focus on his demeanor, Oh my god he treated her disrespectfully and they'd declare her the winner. It doesn't matter at all what she says, she fits some perverse storyline that they want to pursue and that's it. We will be hearing about her until well after the 2012 elections.

Come on she can see Russia from her front porch (as long as it is at least 1500 miles long), so if she mistakes one country for another, she can be forgiven, unless she was one of Levi's mother's customers

It's like she's been skimming International Politics for Dummies during commercials.

This might have been a slip of the tongue had she not repeated "Iraq" several times over.

No, she only said Iraq once in the excerpt. Like Obama saying "57 states" or mispronouncing a constellation, or Gore saying geothermal energy comes from "millions of degrees" of warmth, this stuff is trivial. The fact that she's generally uninformed is important, her idiocy about Israeli settlements is important, but this slip of the tongue is irrelevant.

She says "Iraq" twice in the bit provided above.
It's just more evidence that she has no natural comfort level talking about anything that doesn't involve lipstick or animals.

You're right, twice. I still think it's a slip of the tongue.

As much as I can't stand her, I'm giving her a pass on this one. Simple mistake that anyone could make, and I'm sure she knows the difference (at least, I hope).

Personally I love that this airhead is soaking up all of the media attention. This keeps real conservative politicians off the air and interferes with their ability to lie about HCR and scuttle it, among other mischief. She's useless as a future candidate and a significant obstacle to the GOP in getting their message out. I wish she, the teabaggers, the birthers and the rest of the crazies would blanket the airwaves, effectively shutting down the GOP's public relations efforts altogether. Dead ends that waste resources.

"Shakin' things up." Wow, that there's some straight-shootin' Alaska folksiness. Tellin' 'em nobody's gonna stand for this.
Wow, she's really reinvented herself!

Reminds me of something a reviewer once said about Madonna: "She's made a little talent go a long way. Like a piece of chewing gum stretched from here to the moon."

Has anyone ever heard her mention any other world figure by name other than Ahmadinejad's? Even that name, I'm sure, she learned while being prepped for the VP debate last year- I remember her using his name.
The bright side for her is that her geographical knowledge has improved; last year she mistook a continent for a country, this time its one country for another. With this pace, she'll hopefully learn all the continents names and geographical position by 2012.
The fact that this woman could have gotten the chance to be the commander in chief of the greatest military in the history of mankind just scares me to death.
