During her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Palin explained her infamous gaffe from the 2008 campaign, when Katie Couric asked what newspapers and magazines she reads, and Palin responded that she reads "all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years." And Palin said that she was annoyed at someone asking about what people in Alaska read.
"Now obviously, you've read books and magazines," said Winfrey. "Why didn't you just name some books or magazines?"
"Well, and obviously I have of course all my life read. I'm a lover of books and magazines and newspapers," said Palin. "By the time she asked me that question, even though it was kind of early on in the interview, I was already so annoyed, and it was very unprofessional of me to wear that annoyance on my sleeve."
"Was it that you couldn't think of any in the moment?" Winfrey asked.
"No, it was more like, 'Are you kidding me? Are you really asking me? To me, it was in the context of, 'Do you read? How do you stay informed, you're way up there?'" said Palin. "It seemed like she was discovering this nomadic tribe, a member of a tribe from some Neanderthal cave in Alaska, asking me, how do you stay in touch with the real world? That's how I took the question."
Winfrey later asked: "When you finished that interview, did you think, 'I wished I had just named some magazines?'"
"Absolutely!" Palin replied. "Then we probably wouldn't be talking about it today."

What an airhead.
After eight years of Bush, it shouldn't have come as a huge shock to her system that the American public would want someone who was intellectually curious.
You don't get to audition for leader of the free world by reading nothing more than the National Enquirer. Enough said.

I think "fraud" is more accurate.
She's not as principled as she'd like any of us (including herself) to think she is - and her insecurities remind me of Richard Nixon.

Um, Sarah? Did it ever occur to you that to most people, you were a complete unknown, and therefore, what you read regularly would have been informative about you? Or did you just assume the worst possible motive for Couric asking that question? The same Couric who you were told suffered from self-esteem issues?
This is complete gobbledy-gook. I'm not near a TV, but could someone tell {gulp, I think I want to know this} how the crowd responded?

What do you read?
Standard wingnut: "I glance at the NYT online to see the headlines then devour the WSJ Op/Ed and Investor's Business Daily and of course I LOVE NRO and then am ready to start the day" (Michelle WACHmann gave a version of this answer)
Sarah: "Wuh?"
WE are in a world of hurt when a possible candidate for the GOP can run on the slogan "Yeah I am nuttier than Sarah Palin, but oh so much better read!"
(And can someone kill me now? Because after yesterday I have to get used to the concept of "Bob Barr, the Voice of Sanity of the Republican Party" and the cognitive dissonance is making my brain hurt)

Because even in this interview, it "seemed like she was discovering this nomadic tribe" when she talks about reading. I'd be fine if she says: Fox News, or DrudgeReport, or whatever (it's what i would expect from her). Just prove to me that you can actually name a news source!!!

If the sum total of her interviews added up to develop her as having a decent level of intellectual curiosity, you're right... it wouldn't matter.
But in reality, the rest of her interview were equally as miserable and pathetic, if not more so. So from that, and having no evidence to the contrary from any other instances of her public quotes and opinions, reasonable people have to assume the Couric interview (and the 'book question', and her response) was exactly reflective of the type of person she is.

I believe you're right, the question wasn't about books, just newspapers and magazines. You'd of thunk that Sarah could at least have come up with the name of the Fairbanks newspaper whether she reads it or not. And in desperation, she could have thrown in the NY Times (with appropriate sneer and disclaimer). I guess asking her to name Newsweek or the New Republic was too much to expect.
Had she been on her toes, and I'll give her some leeway for nervousness, she could have pointed out that many informed people are relying more and more on online sources, and then named some she likes. On the other hand, maybe like Bush Jr., she only watches the boob tube and hears what other people read and digest for her.

The real issue here is Sarah Palin wants to be Katie Couric. Being a beauty contestant and having gotten a shot at broadcasting, topped with not doing anything relevant to make her eligible for the second highest office of the nation, she was under the impression that somehow she only needed to parrot talking points in an interview and that would be that. After all it worked at Fox.
The only reason for becoming Governor of Alaska was to get the celebrity treatment that she craves. She loves nothing better than all this attention, which is why unfortunately, she always be with us in some shape or form.
Her remark about Katie being was so juvenile that it's disgusting. Let's just pray she gets her reality or talk show soon and we never have to be concern with her in the political arena again.
Hopefully her narcissism combined with her stupidity soon be the demise of her. In the meantime - Dear God...

You got it.
Sarah Palin's highest ambition is to become a celebrity based on her current celebrity status.
Her athletic ability has long gone, her looks are fading, and she has pushed her political rogue status in Alaska as far as it can go. The desperation of the McCain camp to drag in the christian right gave her a last gasp chance to rejuvenate her otherwise dead-in-the-water professional celebrity hopes.
Now she's floundering again and the media itself is so desperate that it is trying to throw her a lifeline. She failed as Governor, now she is hoping that her book will somehow salvage her hopes to become a permanent paid but otherwise forgotten celebrity member of Hollywood Squares or something of lesser quality.
It's not going to work. She has only gotten this far after the election because TV has a lot of airtime to fill and nothing to fill it with. She is at best a short term train wreck that TV will grab onto for the moment.
With Palin, TV still has nothing to fill all that time with.

The culture of victimhood comes through so clearly in her answer. Instead of just a simple question about what she liked to read, Palin is sure that Couric was trying to catch her in a "gotcha" moment - and trying to show up Palin as the dumb snowbilly everybody thought she was. Those mean old liberal media elites, looking down on us poor, simple country folk!
Either that, or she really doesn't read anything, and she's just backpedalling, as usual. Either way, this is great news for John McCain!

OK, I'll bite:
Main Entry: rogue
Pronunciation: \ˈrōg\
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1561
1 : vagrant, tramp
2 : a dishonest or worthless person : scoundrel
3 : a mischievous person : scamp
4 : a horse inclined to shirk or misbehave
5 : an individual exhibiting a chance and usually inferior biological variation
Awesome, in all of its many applications. Of course, when the word was first applied to her - by a member of McCain's staff, I believe - it was not intended as a compliment, but as a way to describe someone who was actively sabotaging the campaign. It figures that someone as unlettered as Palin would embrace the term, thinking it was something positive.

Actually, Palin used it herself as a derogatory term to refer to Walt Monaghan (the public safety official she wanted fired because he refused to carry out her vendetta). She's banking on no one in the media pointing that out.
And she's probably correct, given the insipid nature of our media.

People who love reading love to share what they are reading with other people. That's why there are book clubs. If Ms Palin were such a reading enthusiast, she would be on that question of "what do you read?" like white on rice. What's rather disheartening is that regardless of how often she proves that she's a dishonest airhead, 20-25% of the population will continue to be convinced that she's been victimized, that she's "one of us", and therefore qualified to be VP or President.
The fact that Palin continues to be in the public eye says more about this country than it does about her, and that's not good news.

She could have come up with the Wall Street Journal, or something. You'd have an answer ready for the next time surely.
I didn't get the impression she had read much of her own book either. And how dumb do you have to be to insult a news anchor by name, in writing, before going on a National book tour.
