Rep. Don Manzullo (R-IL) called the Gitmo detainees who may be moved to a prison in his district "really, really mean people" who are "driven by a savage religion" in an interview with a local NBC affiliate that aired yesterday.

Manzullo represents Thomson, home of a near-empty prison that might be used to house several Guantanamo Bay detainees. "These are really really mean people whose job it is to kill people," Manzullo said. He claimed that they were driven by a "savage religion."

Manzullo supports the federal government's purchase of the prison --- just not if alleged terrorists are imprisoned there. "The people of Thomson should not be held hostage," he said, "by saying, you don't get the prison unless you take these 215 terrorists." He believes that the odds of escape are low; however, his concern is for the risk of terrorist attack against the prison or Thomson itself.

Thomson, Illinois, is by the Mississippi Railroad and cornfields and easily accessible by automobile. So that would create a significant security threat not only to the people of that area...but of the entire country.

Manzullo isn't the only Illinois Republican opposing the proposed relocation. Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL), who is running for President Barack Obama's former Senate seat, has said that moving Gitmo detainees to Thomson would make Illinois "ground zero" for future terrorist attacks.

Here's the full segment that the NBC affiliate aired:

Apparently I've missed the hundreds of terror attacks that took place in Cuba.

If anyone is wondering why Illinois voters preferred Blagojevich (twice!) to ANY Illinois republican, here is one more piece of evidence.

Illinois republicans are setting back human evolution on a daily basis.

And Christianity is the "Civilized Religion. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go oil my racks and thumbscrews and, now that waterboarding has fallen into such disrepute, build a new, improved dunking chair.

The 3 major religions are all barbaric.

It's a sad commentary that our species still relies on fairy tales steeped in misogyny, bigotry, and a reward system based upon fear and submission that arose during the infancy of our species to guide us in the 21st century.

OK, for majors I have Christianity, Islam, Budism and Hinduism.
Maybe Shinto and Confusism (although it can be argued it's not a religion but a way of life) Judism is an antecedent to Christianity and Islam but its population does not necessarily make it a major religion.
So which ones are you referring to?

This headline is a little unfair, I think. He didn't say Islam is a savage religion, only that these guys are "driven by" a savage religion. A lot of reasonable people (including me, in all modesty) believe that people like KSM are driven by a savage religion -- a fanatical, delusional belief in a sadistic and homicidal god who wants them to kill innocent people -- and nonetheless believe that that isn't true of Islam properly practiced. Indeed, I think this headline itself could be read as equating Islam with homicidal terrorist fanaticism, although I know that isn't its purpose.

There is ample evidence elsewhere in the short clip (including in the excerpted paragraph about the Illinois cornfields) to indicate that Manzullo holds absurd views, but I don't think the savage religion bit is one of them.

That's very generous of you. But I think you're wrong. I don't think his views are nearly as moderated as that. He's an ignorant, racist jerk.

But he actually said "savage religion." And I doubt his is an nuanced a view of Islam as yours is.

I don't know what happened to our Republicans. I used to think they were thoughtful, fiscal Conservatives. Now they all stand somewhere near Sarah Palin on the issues (including having issues with the truth). It's a shame.

No doubt Manzullo meant Islam in general. When a local newspaper reported on a local Somali immigrant who got talked into joining the jihad in Somalia and killed in the fighting, the comments were loaded with glee that a Muslim was dead and they openly hoped for more. No, they had no sympathy that a young man got tricked by fundamentalists. In the mind of Islamophobes, there is no distinction between a violent Islamist and any other Muslim.

I'm racking my brain to understand why they even bother to talk in public.
