In a Washington Post profile of the erstwhile Republican candidate for New York's 23rd district, Dede Scozzafava marveled at her new fame -- and warned her party against pushing out the moderates.

"My name's a verb now," she told the Post. Indeed, the nearly unpronounceable "scozzafavaed" made its way into the user-generated Urban Dictionary after she withdrew from the election amid sinking poll numbers and a nationally-supported conservative candidate.

She also issued a warning to the Republican party.

"There is a lot of us who consider ourselves Republicans, of the Party of Lincoln," she said, her face now flush. "If they don't want us with them, we're going to work against them."

The state assemblywoman was stripped of her Republican leadership position yesterday.

The profile also recounts the days leading up to, and immediately following, her decision to withdraw from the race.

Scozzafava said she heard conservative-funded robocalls decrying her as a "child killer," a "lesbian lover" and a "homo."

According to the Post, she was heavily courted by Democrats -- sent by the White House -- and urged to endorse the Democratic candidate, Bill Owens. Owens won the election.

Bill Clinton tried to get in touch with her. She received calls from Owens, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, considered the administration's choice for governor, all lending their support. The Democratic leader of the State Assembly reportedly told her she was welcome in his caucus.

Scozzofava and Cao are learning what it means to be a Republican in 2009. You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. I do feel sorry for both of them and the way they have been treated, but how can it come as any surprise that a political party that feeds on the unhinged wingnut base will turn on you viciously and irrationally?

Am I crazy, or is this the first time a moderate Repub has actually publicly pushed back against the lunatic fringe that's hijacked their party? I mean, I keep expecting to hear from one of them (and I *assume* they're out there, but I have no concrete proof) after the latest daily batshit-crazy news development, but all I've heard is crickets.

I wish one of them WOULD start organizing. As much as I enjoy watching the GOP implode, it's just not good for any of us to have one-party politics in place, at least not in the long run. So I'd like to see the "party of Lincoln" get its cojones back ... right after we get health care reform and climate change accomplished.

They don't get the microphones swo they just get savaged. The only way they can have any meaning is to change parties. The Big Tent got blown away during Katrina and the survivors are acting like the Donner party. Just what does kicked out Republican taste like? Calling Andrew Zimmern.
