Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) has apologized for suggesting that, if 9/11 trials are held in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's daughter could be kidnapped.
"I saw the mayor of New York said today, 'We're tough. We can do it.' Well, Mayor, how are you going to feel when it's your daughter that's kidnapped at school by a terrorist?" Shadegg said last night.
This afternoon, he told the Associated Press that he's sorry -- but added that his point was still a good one.
"I apologize for the insensitivity of my remarks with respect to the mayor or his family, however I think it is important to note that this decision involves potential risk to innocent people," he said.
Shadegg was scheduled to appear this afternoon on MSNBC to discuss his comment but, according to host David Shuster, canceled because he had meetings to attend.

Again. I will guarantee that before the week is over another Republican will say or do something that questions the very concept of human decency. I hope people have figured out that the republican party is one that welcomes insurrectionists, fascists, racists, and extremists. Nobody else. If you think you are a moderate republican you are most likely a moderate Democrat. You are welcome to believe the same beliefs though you would be a part of the only group of people that care about fixing anything or doing anything of any level of importance and benefit to the nation.

But you enjoy your delusions, kiddo. Apparently your 'moderate' status is just another delusion if you're willing to believe such obvious lies & conspiracy theories about us.
The religious persecution comes from you lot - a million dead Muslims, and you're all ready to take away citizenship of every American Muslim.
All we ask is that the basic concept of keeping church and state separate be respected - whereas you lot seem to think the concept itself is some kind of recent conspiracy against Christianity. Gullible fools.
Religious Democrats, including our president, respect the concept of church and state.

I hate to answer a question with another question. But why should we? The Constitution doesn't say anything about giving rights to terrorists who've attacked our country. In fact, it says that Congress shall have the power to define and punish "piracies" and "felonies" committed on the "high seas" and "offences against the Law of Nations".
You didn't see FDR bringing the Japanese admiral who bombed Pearl Harbor back to Hawaii for trial. Same for the Nazi's captured on US soil - they were tried in a tribunal. Even Obama said that tribunals are appropriate for trying detainees.

It's obvious where you get your opinions from based on your constant repitition of right wing talking points. You don't add any understanding of why a given wingnut talking point might be valid, you simply repeat the assertion of the day or vis a vis a particular issue.
This is why you're constantly subjected to abuse. Rush Limbaugh or Beck could have a bot that does what you do. It's mindless repitition that doesn't address counterarguments or reflect any independent thought.

You haven't made a point, dipshit. You've asserted something as if the reasoning behind it is self-evident. Well, the reasoning isn't self-evident, and when pressed you can't defend the assertion. So the obvious conclusion is that the assertion is coming from somewhere other than your deep research and independent thinking on the issue.
Given that the wingnuts are uniformly howling about "terrorists in our back yard," and Tim McVeigh-Loving Bill is howling about "terrorists in our back yard," it doesn't take a stretch of logic to conclude that you are, once again, mindlessly repeating the assertions of the bullies and demagogues you let do the thinking for you, chiefly Limbaugh and Beck.

AFAIK, there were no Japanese captured at Pearl Harbor after the attacks.
If there were trials or imprisonments of any sort that resulted from that specific act, I've never heard of it and can find no reference to it.
Of course, CONGRESS declared war on their nation after they declared war on us, and our armed forces fought their armed forces, and we dropped two atomic bombs on their country--but any Japanese soldiers we captured were treated humanely and in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.
And we did nothing to their Emperor.

Why does KSM deserve a criminal trial? What's wrong with a military tribunal?
Here's what President Obama has said - "Military commissions have a history in the United States dating back to George Washington and the Revolutionary War. They are an appropriate venue for trying detainees for violations of the laws of war. They allow for the protection of sensitive sources and methods of intelligence-gathering; for the safety and security of participants; and for the presentation of evidence gathered from the battlefield that cannot be effectively presented in federal Courts."

Very mature response to tell someone to "choke" on something. Thanks for posting this opinion piece. This reminds me of our short-selling discussion, where you just post links to other articles (which are also opinion pieces like this one) and seem to infer that I am wrong because my opinion is different from another person's opinion. I could also post opinion pieces which support my opinion but I'm not here to just debate others opinions. Ironically, despite your insistence that I am somehow delusional and just a Beck puppet, the first sentence of this well written opinion piece says that reasonable minds can disagree.

This is hilarious coming from someone whose blogs consist of links to Wall Street Journal opinion pieces that ask that totally non-loaded question, "Barack Obama: Bad President or Worst President Ever?"
The reason I linked to the WaPo essay was because it was written by conservatives who, compared to the wingnut fringe whose talking points you parrot, support domestic criminal trials for KSM and the others. This proves, definitively, that you are on the far-right side of a rightwing party that has been soundly rejected by the American people. But rather than attempt to defend your positions, you offer nothing but circular (sample: MCB: "The constitution mandates military tribunals for terrorists." Me: "Where does it do that, Bill?" MCB "Well, I've read the Constitution , and that's what it says." Or, maybe, "Where DOESN'T it say so? And stop calling me names.")
You should just get off the internets, you big baby. You haven't got what it takes. I wouldn't even waste the time responding to your shit if you didn't keep shoving it in our collective faces on this website.

I'm not sure why I bother to respond since you clearly aren't listening. There are plenty of conservatives who support criminal trials and plenty of conservatives who oppose them. That doesn't make any of them "wingnuts".
I also don't recall linking to any articles with silly titles such as "Bad President or Worst President Ever?" but I'm sure you have proof of me doing so.
And I never said that the Constitution "madates" military tribunals for terrorists. But you claim that I did. What I DID say is that Constitutional rights shouldn't be afforded to terrorists who are trying to take down our country and our government. I said that there is nothing in the Constitution which says that they should get the same rights that you or I would get if we committed a crime.

Terrorism is aimed at innocent individuals and is designed to make politicians afraid to do what is required to fight the terrorists. Shadegg bought into the terrorist agenda.
Good going, Shadegg. You are a terrorist fellow traveler.

These idiots need to be constantly remimded that the trial for the 1993 bombing went off without attacks. I also heard today that the US has prosecuted and won convictions on 193 terror cases. Why doesn't some reporter inform these inbreds and hayseed! They would look less stupid but, not by much! Oh and let's hope no one in your family is kidnapped and murdered!

The staggering statistic is that we only got 3 tribunal convictions within the same period of time.

My (Republican, very Catholic) mother said something to the same effect, only it was more like, "Well, they should keep those prisoners on the White House lawn and see what happens to Obama's kids!"
I did the classy thing and walked out of the room.

I don't think that GOPer's from flyover country are so much scared of terrorists blowing up the local Denny's.
At this point, I honestly think they are actually jealous that their bumblefuck districts, unlike NYC, don't have anything that would even be remotely enticing for a terrorist to attack.
At the end of the day, dickheads like Shadegg and Golmert Pyle, and the rest of the "shit-their-pants-at-the-mention-of-terrorism-the-end-is-neigh" crowd don't give a fuck about security or otherwise. To them, it's merely a dick sizing contest between them and NYC, and to no ones surprise, they lose. So they overcompensate with criticism about subjects (ie security and terrorism) that simply do not concern them or their districts and project all their loathing about the inadequacies that their hometowns and states can never and will never make anywhere near an impact on world events that a city like New York does.

Since the original point is that decisions by political leaders can threaten innocent people, is it impolite to observe that Shadegg's pernicious ignorance about terrorism and health care and everything else important threatens innocent people everywhere? Every day?

Keep your children away from Rep. Shadegg and his child abduction fantasies.
This sicko needs to be entered into one of those registries.
