On the House floor last night, Media Matters points out, Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) made his case against holding trials for 9/11 suspects in New York City, directing a question to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"I saw the mayor of New York said today, 'We're tough. We can do it.' Well, Mayor, how are you going to feel when it's your daughter that's kidnapped at school by a terrorist?" Shadegg said.

"How are you going to feel when it's some clerk -- some innocent clerk of the court -- whose daughter or son is kidnapped? Or the judge's wife? Or the jailer's little brother or little sister? This is political correctness run amok," he continued.

Watch:

Late update: This afternoon, Shadegg apologized for the remark.

Apparently, all the posters of Obama as the Joker have convinced the Republicans that they live IN a Batman movie.

Seriously - if AQ took a hostage to try to spring these guys, why wouldn't we just shoot the hostage? It's not like we haven't already killed hundreds of thousands on this "crusade"...

My god, what a week the Republicans are having - this, plus Beck's "raping the economy" comment, O'Reilly predicting Pelosi will be murdered by an angry mob ("its gonna get nasty. Nancy Pelosi's going to be bobbing up and down in the Boston Harbor").

And it is only Tuesday.

I think it is their Spinal Tap moment - they've turned it up to 11 and now have nowhere else to go.

I keep thinking the GOP got the inverse message of the last two election cycles. Rather than spend any time on introspection or changing approach, the idea is to go back to what worked before (fear mongering and class/racial division) and crank it up a notch. But there just comes a point where it wears off. Think about it - if the GOP is this freaked out (much less the nutty TEA folks) already, what do they do to keep it up for the next year, much less the next three? How long can they just keep braying "NO" and "BE AFRAID" before even their die hard core tunes them out?

This is political correctness run amok

I don't get it. What is "politically correct" about putting criminals on trial and giving them due process? When they put the train bombers on trial in Spain there were no problems. Likewise, nobody got kidnapped or killed when they put terrorists on trial in England. There were trials, the bad guys were convicted and put in jail, and life went on.

Wait...it's all making sense to me now. As with providing health care for all its citizens, trials for terrorists is just something that those Europeans do better than us, because they're...

Socialists.

The "politically correct" terminology has been pretty popular lately with these people in a variety of contexts. It has nothing at all to do with the actual policy decision behind these trials. Instead, it is code for anything that liberals, academics, or other thoughtful people believe in or are thought to believe in. PC is being touchy-feely, weak, overly-sensitive, or otherwise lacking in blood thirst.

Google "political correctness run amok", you'll see what I mean

The Republicans are terrified to the point of hysteria by the thought that KSM, et.al., might actually get CONVICTED, and worse, SENTENCED. Then the only action we have taken to serve justice on anyone actually involved in 9/11 will happen under the aegis of the Obama administration and ... horror of horrors ... Obama will get credit for it. When they talk of a potential terrorist attack during the trial, they aren't expressing a fear, they're expressing a hope.

Also: the only way Bloomberg's adult daughters are going to be kidnapped from school is if they're visiting in the course of their philanthropic work.

The NY courts and law enforcement have managed to protect court workers, jurors, and their families from mobsters and gangsters with much greater ties and connections to the local community for decades. Apparently not so in chickenhawk red state America.

It seems to me that only New Yorkers can give terrorists a fair trial, despite the barbarity of the crimes committed on 9/11. Most objections to a New York trial seem to come from far away. One exception is New York's barely-competent governor, but he said he will cooperate fully with the federal trial.
These terrorists should have been tried long ago, not detained incommunicado and tortured. That was Unamerican, it was beneath us.

More evidence, Mr. Shadegg.
After 9/11, George W. Bush (business parter of the Bin Laden family) gathered up the members of that family and flew them out of the country to safety.
Bush then 'went after' Bin Laden with only 5,000 US troops, surrounded Tora Bora with a force of Bin Laden's co-religionists, sympathizers and admirers, and let him make an easy getaway without so much as a 'dagnabbit!'
In seven years the Bush administration made no effort to capture Bin Laden, even announcing publicly that they weren't interested in him. Instead they attacked his political and religious opponents.
And now that Democrats are trying Al-Qaeda members, you,Mr. Shadegg, are expressing alarm that Al-Qeda will attack us and kidnap our daughters.

The conclusion is inescapable: the Republican strategy towards Al-Qaeda has been one of SURRENDER and APPEASEMENT, treating the organization and its leader with kid gloves and kowtowing to his family. An now that measures are being taken, you're SCARED that the cowardly deal the Republicans engineered is unravelling.

Thanks for showing that you've been selling out America's honor for 8 years.

We'd all be saluting huge portraits of Adolf Hitler III and Hirohito IV today in our schools and government buildings as a result of the GOP's immediate surrender following Pearl Harbor. The Imperial Japanese would have been given control of the west coast in exchange for juicy commercial contracts given to GOP-connected pols, and the Nazis would have had free reign from the eastern seaboard to the Rocky Mountains following the GOP's bed-wetting capitulation to Albert Speer. I think Giuliani would look positively smashing in a German military uniform myself.

My other favorite GOP talking point: KSM is going to be able to recruit other prisoners in federal prison. Nevermind that he'll end up in solitary and will never have any contact with other inmates. Have those doofuses ever visited a maximum security federal pen? I have (for work reasons, duh!) and it is one locked down place. I actually hyperventilated from claustrophobia just from being in a conference room behind multiple sets of steel doors. And they think prisoners escape from these places? Idiots.
